Additional observations Our Lady of Grace is a parish of the Diocese of Tucson. It is south of Phoenix, and is known for a 4000-acre cotton farm and later cattle ranch owned by actor John Wayne. The parish began as a mission church in the 1950s. After many years of fundraising, a new, 500-seat church was built in 2015 and dedicated in 2016. It is a beautiful, traditional church inside and out. There is land around the church for additional buildings as funds are raised. It has a gift shop with gift items.
To be traditional it must have an altar rail, high altar and foremost The Traditional Latin Mass, only then will it be traditional.
Ha…no…a traditional church looks like this:
http://blog.adw.org/2014/08/the-ancient-mass-in-the-house-churches-was-not-as-informal-as-many-think/
What nonsense. There was a brief time… maybe one year or so that the Monterey Latin Mass was in a local mens religous group after they’d been rudely kicked out. The ordinary was kind enough to support this group. Later, they moved to Queen of Heaven cemeteries where Mass was in the crowded ossuary! I promise you there was no high altar, conventional altar rail either. But, they did have a wonderful priest and scola. This was my introduction to the TLM.
One small piece of adivse, try not to be a bit more kind and generous.
People: the true guardians and custodians of authentic Catholic Tradition is the Magisterium (that’s the Pope and the bishops in union with him, for you dissenters out there). They determine the authentic Tradition that is to be handed down to the Church. This is their task, not the task of the excommunicate Lefebvre when he was still breathing, nor of his beloved SSPX, nor of the beloved Institute of Christ the King, nor of the beloved FSSP, nor any of the former “Ecclesia Dei” communities. If the
And the true guardians of Catholic Tradition are certainly not Romulus Augustus nor Chardin. It’s the Magisterium.
jon, you won’t often hear me sort of taking the side of Romulus, but in a way he is right. Traditional with a capital “T” is the Tradition which along with Sacred Scripture, is the deposit of faith to be guarded by the Pope and Bishops. However, there are traditions, small t, like the altar rail etc, which are not a part of the deposit of faith and which are not required to be held by the faithful, that can be said to be traditional. He used the small t traditional, so I assume he is speaking of traditions that can and have changed many times over the centuries and locations in which the faith has been practiced.
It seems to me that you are using the word traditional to mean according to the custom of a certain age, which is not wrong. But I think of the United States and how many Churches were really like that? I know a lot of parishes had Mass in the basement while their Churches with the high altars were being built.
Also if you look at the picture there is a high altar. This is from Catholic Encyclopedia: The high altar is so called from the fact that it is the chief altar in a church, and also because it is raised on an elevated plane in the sanctuary, where it may be seen simultaneously by all the faithful in the body of the church
Rom, the traditional Latin Mass is beautiful. But, our sacred tradition, including the Mass, long predates altar rails and high altars and even the Mass in Latin. Your definition of tradition is so narrow as to be inaccurate. Be inspired and edified by the TLM, but there is no need to criticize other forms of the Mass reverently celebrated. By all means, promote the TLM joyfully and invite others to join you. God rejoices when people come to Mass (of whatever form or rite).
Odd…Saturday vigil mass requires mask and distancing but all the Sunday masses do not.
And where are the statues and Stations of the Cross?
I think the statues are in the side altars. There is a video on Youtube of the re-consecration and there is a statue of our Lady of Grace.
The Stations you can see in the picture here. They are high up on the walls.
John Wayne was married three times. His first wife, Josephine, and last wife, Pilar, (to whom he was happily married until death) were both Catholics. Josephine would not re-marry until after John Wayne’s death. John Wayne loved God, and was deeply grateful to God for his success. He hand-wrote, tearfully, many grateful “love letters” to God. He refused to act in any immoral Hollywood movies. He was around Catholics and high-ranking Catholic clerics, lifelong, due to his wives. He finally converted to the Catholic Faith on his deathbed, when dying of cancer, in 1979. He said he would have converted earlier, but had “too busy a schedule.” His grandson, Fr. Matthew Munoz, became a priest.
Great story about Mr Wayne an American icon indeed, but cancel culture Communists have been trying to destroy him too for years. Best Western ever was The Searchers and before anyone here says it yes it had elements of racism in it no doubt but John Ford Who directed The Searchers, a few years later made Cheyenne Autumn and tried to show his empathy with the Native Americans from his earlier Westerns.
John Wayne was terrific. An American icon. “The Searchers,” a famous, widely-acclaimed film, was based on a true story, of an Indian abduction of a little 9-year-old girl (played by Natalie Wood). Loved other famous John Wayne movies, too, like “The Quiet Man,” “The Alamo,” “True Grit,” (for which John Wayne won an Academy Award), etc. John Wayne and director John Ford were a famous duo. Miss those all-American, iconic movie heroes– they had integrity, refused roles in evil, immoral, or excessively dark and violent movies. Good ol’ John Wayne.
I don’t necessarily agree with all that a movie might depict, and all that movie actors say or do. But if the film and actor are pretty good, morally decent, and have a lot to offer, then I will ignore the things I disagree with. Loved most all of the “Silver Screen” classic film era’s movies, actors, and actresses. Sadly, during that time, racism existed. Hattie McDaniel, the first Black woman to win an Oscar for her portrayal of Mammy in Gone With the Wind, could not attend the Atlanta film premiere, because the theater was all-white. And she was confined to a tiny table, all alone, outside the Academy Awards event, due to racial segregation. Some of the film’s actors, like Clark Gable, were just horrified, and went over to Hattie McDaniel’s table, to sit with her and comfort her, and congratulate her on her Oscar. Regardless– Gone With the Wind is an all-time favorite.

To the Moderators: Why did you remove my correct English quotation marks, in my post of Nov. 29th at 11:57pm?? My quotation marks, placed in “Mammy” and “Gone With the Wind” are 100% correct! Please don’t do that, it is wrong! And also– you persist in removing all exclanation points (!) in all of my posts, rendering them “robotic,” ” non-human,” modernistically “deadpan,” and lifeless! Why are you so afraid of real human expression, in writing style?
Why do you use so many quotation marks and ! All the time?
!!! Don’t be a mean troll. I use the English language in a very normal way. How about you?
Well, for example, I love classic era films too but I don’t have to exclaim it. And I don’t get all defensive about it either. And I don’t have to put it in quotation marks.
!!! You need good manners, and to respect the writing styles of others. Your writing style is your own.
It’s bad manners to make rude comments about writing styles of other people. You should have learned that in school, !!!– Or whoever you are.
Around the height of the National riots, leftists came within an inch of having Santa Ana John Wayne Airport’s changed back in 2020, but then they suddenly seemed to forget about it. There’s always some darned good RT deals at that airport too-$151 Miami, $176 Maui! Long layovers though.
