Additional observations St. Paul’s is a church of an earlier era. The parish was established along the Central Pacific Railroad line in 1883. It began with a small wooden church; the current church, built in 1924, was designed by a noted San Francisco architect. It has traditional architecture and artwork.
Lalalalala — here we go again. Spanish masses, no Latin. Problems with getting vocations so they go to Mexico. Altar girls very welcomed.
You know what, Father, you will continue to have vocation issues, until there is no more church. Turn towards Tradition to be saved, Father.
Good luck, it appears that you care very much for your parishioners. But, you will need more, Father, much more.
I know, St. C, that you don’t like most things Catholic, but you are pushing the envelope on this Church. Go to the web site: https://stpaulswinnemucca.org/. There, you will find a parish that is reverent, focused on the liturgy and helping their fellow man with a Soup Kitchen, clothing closet for those in need, etc., etc.. The town has a large Spanish speaking population. Would you deny them the Mass in the vernacular? This, in spite of your protest, seems like a very traditional and Traditional parish. I would guess that Latin isn’t going to flood the church pews with worshipers. It’s great for those who want it, but don’t push it on the rest of us.
Hey Bob One it was the so called reformers that pushed the vernacular on the rest of us. Me and St C. don’t like most things that faux Catholic, the novelty, the kumbya, the wrecked liturgy, you always give away what your priorities are, besides wrecking tradition its always “social justice ” garbage with and you and never the salvation of souls. You are liberal to the core Bob One, my real hope is for a complete schism with the progressives, just please run off to your nearest Episcopalian sect you can have all the social justice you could ever want, abortion, condoms gay marriage all those things that you liberals worship instead of Christ. No Bob One we cannot have a “big tent” where we can all get along… Please God give us a smaller but holier Church no matter the cost…please God get rid of these paganized social do-gooders, who have wrecked your Church….
Canisius, here is the teaching of the Catholic Church about social justice, taken from the USSCB web site:
Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God’s special love for the poor and called God’s people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind”(Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with “the least of these,” the hungry and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the eucharist.
As the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, “To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, his brethren” (no. 1397).
Catholic social teaching emerges from the truth of what God has revealed to us about himself. We believe in the triune God whose very nature is communal and social. God the Father sends his only Son Jesus Christ and shares the Holy Spirit as his gift of love. God reveals himself to us as one who is not alone, but rather as one who is relational, one who is Trinity. Therefore, we who are made in God’s image share this communal, social nature.
THE USCCB ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha……they have done such splendid job Bob One…But once again you as a liberal turn feeding the poor into the Church’s primary job which it is NOT… the Church has 2 primary jobs leading souls to heaven and creating saints….but you are liberal and I realize you cannot understand this,, I never believed much in community,, I believe in brutal self reliance as that’s how I survived growing up..I reject your liberalism Bob ONe and always will
“Bob One”: Normally your Zombie-Liberal comments are, well, nothing more than whatever the day’s Democratic Party talking points contain. Too bad that, on this one, you say that the writer does not “like most things Catholic”.
An interesting observation from someone that rarely says anything that is Orthodox Catholic, pretending ,as you do, to know much about the Catholic Church and what it stands for. Put another way, you really cannot speak about “things Catholic” as you lack competence about the Faith.
Instead, you, and your Zombie-Liberal posters to CCD, are nothing more than apologists for the parade of the horribles that wreck havoc on the Catholic Church. No one is “pushing” anything on you, “Bob One”, particularly as you have found yourself a comfortable place among the rubble of today’s institutional Church.
You, and your pals, will go on spritzing perfume on the dung-heap, while fewer and fewer people are taught, or care about, the True Faith. Your comments — “well, there are Spanish speakers here so we can’t deny them their mass in the vernacular, can we, huh, huh, huh?” — read more like Ralph Kramden than anything intelligible about the Faith.
St. C, I’m not sure what a “zombie-liberal” is, but I don’t have any connection to the Democratic party or to many of its platform planks. Today, an “orthodox” Catholic is what it has always been. A person who believes that Christ died to wipe away their sins, that whosoever believes in Him will be saved. One can say the Creed each time they attend Mass, and if they believe, they are “orthodox”, and many more things can be used as examples. The “ORDINARY FORM” of the Catholic Mass is the orthodox Mass of the Day. Some Catholics prefer the older “EXTRAORDINARY FORM”, and that is orthodox as well. But I think it is important to understand that the VII changed a lot in the Church, and with purpose. Anyone who doesn’t accept the teachings of VII is likely in schism with the Church. Those who accept the teachings of VII are orthodox. Now, I do believe that you are correct when you say that the folks today don’t know the tenet of their faith like most did sixty years ago, and that the Church has been remiss in its teaching ministry and that needs to change for the better. But, just because someone prefers the ordinary form of the Mass and in the vernacular, doesn’t mean they are not orthodox. Latin and ancient Rites don’t make for orthodox.
No Bob One, an orthodox Catholic is someone who accepts the entirety of the Catholic Church, what it professes and teaches in its moral teachings and deposit of Faith. Your definition of an orthodox Catholic could apply to any Christian sect and show how wrong you are.
The Diocese of Reno has 7 seminarians studying for the priesthood.
Meaning what, exactly, “Anonymous”? Reno, and its sister Las Vegas, are perennially in the lowest rungs of seminarians in the USA.
Why is that? Well, one reason is the influx of Catholics, which seems good. That is until you realize that many are with the Hispanic flood of immigrants to the USA, as well as others that have moved there for jobs.
The problem with Catholic vocations is that, as many sources report, those entering really do not know much about the Faith. Upon finding out what it really means, a number leave; a good thing, however, is that a solid number of seminarian applicants among the young are Traditionalists (or want to know more about being “traditional” priests and using the “extraordinary” sacraments). Of course, this has thrown a good number of bishops into a tizzy and warnings have been made to seminarians about being “elitist” and the like.
Of course, we will see what happens. Without Tradition, one needs to wonder why any normal young man would wish to commit his life to the Church. After all, you are joining a “New Church” where there is obviously a very wide difference among its members (and clergy) about what to believe. Better to follow the saints.
Well, there you go again, St. C. Do some research. Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing diocese in the nation. Lots of Hispanics, yes, but many, many from the Philippines as well. Both of these groups are highly orthodox Catholics with lots of faith formation in their background. Vegas has a problem of not enough churches to handle the crowds. They are building churches at a rapid rate, with the Bishop’s goal of getting each parish in the diocese down to an average of 3000 families. It amazes me that some people don’t bother looking at facts, but just bloviate on and on about what they don’t understand. We are not a new church. We have existed for thousands of years. We are the church founded by Christ. We are the church that cares more for its people than for ancient rituals, because those rituals have little to do with faith and a lot to do with ..what?
Bob One you just summed up the “spirit of vatican 2” “We are the church that cares more for its people than for ancient rituals, because those rituals have little to do with faith “…So the Holy Mass and the Eucharist have little to do with the Faith, you are so easy to expose…
Did you not read the blog, “Bob One”? You can love Vatican II all you want, but its implementation is the active destruction of the Catholic Church, as seen by any statistical measurement. (And, by the way, as all you Zombie-Liberals love to misstate, Vatican II never called for the elimination of Latin, or for the simply awful structure of the Novus Ordo mass, all of which post-dated the Council. Try to keep up, “Bob One”.)
Many of us know a lot about Las Vegas, too. Yet, its masses are often the least respectful and least Catholic of any seen in the West. For example, take a visit to the simply horrible parish of St. Thomas More in Henderson. Run by the Viator priests (you know, the ones that like to stand when others kneel, that sort of priest)., St. Thomas More is much more of a social hall than a church. The decibel level right up to mass is almost deafening, and it is common for folks coming back to communion (after using the big slurpee cup), to stop and say hello to their pals before going back to their pews. Nice statute of Christ-the-used-car-salesman, too. It goes well with the full-immersion baptismal — and lap — pool, too.
The architecture their, the disrespect shown by parishioners to the House of Christ, and the simply awful architecture gives a pretty accurate picture of what kind of Catholic religion is taught and demanded there.
Bob One, just because someone is of a specific nationality does not mean they have had good Faith formation.
Literate Catholics who have read Sacred Scripture, and the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” have had good Faith formation.
If you check the Las Vegas Diocese web site, Churches that are not in union with Rome, but call themselves Catholic are growing.
Based upon their Diocese web site, the Diocese is withholding information on where legitimate EF Masses, and OF Masses in languages other than English can be found with any reasonable search of the web site.
Since people are not being served properly and legitimately they are joining growing so-called “Catholic” parishes that are not in union with Rome. These are listed on the Las Vegas Diocese web site.
From the Diocese of Las Vegas
Schismatic Communities
There are many other churches that list themselves under Catholic Churches. The list below are not in union with the Holy See and the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas. Thus, these Churches are in schism. Attending Sunday Mass at any of these establishments does not fulfill the obligation to attend Mass.
Included in the list are SSPX chapels.
I recommend that anyone interested in the Church’s teachings on social justice google or read about the Seven Pillars of Catholic Social Teaching. Any version is likely ok, since they all list the same seven items. This is a good place to learn about some of the teachings of the Church, so that we can be sure to believe and live all of it. The Catechism says the same thing, using different words in the section on The Social Doctrine of the Church. ( 2419-2425 in the 1994 edition). The short version is that because Christ died for our sins, we must do good works for those who are less gifted than we are.
I also suggest that those who are interested go to the web site of St. Thomas More to see what others are talking about. The church is designed to bring the altar of sacrifice closer to all the people. I’ve never attended, so I can’t comment on the noise levels. But, the design is ideal for the Catholic Mass, the celebration of the Word and Sacrament. The statue of the risen Christ behind the altar is magnificent. The Baptismal font is pretty much standard with a place for immersion or for sprinkling. A lot of newer churches have similar fonts. A quick review of the weekly bulletin, on a separate web site projects a very active parish with lots of faith formation and lots of opportunities to serve. The letter from the assistant pastor is well written and pastoral. It is hard, at least from a distance, to criticize the parish as a previous commentor has done. It is definitely not an architecture of the 15th century, which many prefer, but it is appropriate to the 21st century.
Of course you like St. Thomas More, “Bob One”, it was made for NewCatholics like you. Just review your own words about the baptismal “pool”: “pretty much standard . . . a lot of newer churches have similar fonts”.
Don’t you understand? These things, the liturgical and sacramental accidentals and rubrics are crucial to understanding the True Faith. What is represented at St. Thomas More and in many more churches is the Hammer & Sickle of the victors of the revolution.
People that go to these kind of churches today know next to nothing about the Faith. They rise up in protest whenever a Faithful priest or religious or lay person makes any statement that only reflects what the Catechism says on abortion, sex outside of man-woman marriage, homosexuality, divorce, and the like. Yet virtually everyone goes to communion, including in two species. How can this be?
You praise this and that as if it is the right and proper thing, yet as the truly awful statue of Christ on the wall shows, this place demonstrates what the NewCatholic masters want it to say about the Faith. Of course, you and the pastor there will be overjoyed about the upcoming Synod, when the leaders of the Church, lead by their German masters, now want to virtually eliminate sexual sins, and “welcome” the most vile into the Church, not as a penitent, but as a leader. You are making Christ a Pharisee.
St. C, don’t you understand? This is the norm. This is the Church of the 21st Century. It is not the NewCatholic. Generations have passed since VII. I have no problem with folks that want to stick to the old ways. Just, please, don’t tell us we don’t know anything about the faith and that we are bad people. It is ok to have a standard form of the Mass and a non-standard form. It’s ok to have a church that is not built in the style of 1500’s. Its all OK! It OK, too, for you to ache for the old, just don’t fee the need to thrust it on us. By the way, Jesus was baptized in in a river. He said to take and drink his body, which is why most parishes today have communion in both species. Its OK!
Bob One, you are wrong.
Both Forms of the Mass have standard/REQUIRED forms that Priests and Laity are NOT permitted to change.
There is no such thing as a “non-standard” form of the Mass.
(Many ABUSE the OF Mass with their antics, disrespectful and immodest dressing, etc.)
The ORDINARY FORM (aka OF, Novus Ordo, which is said in vernacular languages) MUST adhere to the GENERAL INSTRUCTION of the ROMAN MISSAL of 2011 (GIRM).
GIRM can be found on USCCB and Vatican web sites.
https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the-roman-missal/index.cfm
The EXTRAORDINARY FORM of the MASS (aka EF, Traditional, Latin), MUST adhere to the 1962 MIssal.
When done as REQUIRED by the Vatican both forms of the Mass are Holy.
Unfortunately far too many abuses of the OF Mass by some Priests and most Laity take place in the USA.
And Bishops (and Priests) do not correct these abuses so they just get worse.
It is the abuses by not only Priests but by the Laity that drive many away from the OF Mass.
Non-adherence to GIRM should be reported to the appropriate Diocese Bishop.

(In particular see # 4 & #6).
“Bob One” you confuse what is not “permitted” with what is orthodox, or what is sacred and good. Certainly, the Church “permits” (1) Mass in the vernacular, (2) altar girls (under an indult only), (3) communion in the hand (indult), (4) not kneeling to receive, all that stuff, which was “won” by intense disobedience of European (especially German bishops) and American bishops.
Now we have statements — again from our German brethren (who brought us Marx, Engels, Hitler and National Socialism) — that they are going to permit communion for divorced/remarried (non-annulled) adulterers. If they “officially” do this, does it make it alright? You know, Hitler, and Stalin, passed lots of their own laws, and had lots of their own judges, to make everything “legal”.
Similarly, much of what the institutional Church has done since Vatican II is outright deceitful and fraud on the sacrifices of our Saints, who have done what Christ commanded in creating the greatest institution in the history of the Mankind. But to what end? A few bishops, let’s say like the Germans and their fear of losing more tax revenue, get together and decide that they need to make direct changes to the Church’s teachings. Does this make it right?
If tomorrow, Pope Francis decides to “welcome” and “bless” homosexual sexual unions, does this make it right? And if bishop all over the USA decide to have “Gay Friendly” masses, does this make it right (even if the USCCB says that it is fine and dandy)? Time to be Catholic “Bob One”, and not a follower of what has been Catholic for, oh say, two or twenty years.
The Ordinary Form can always be said in Latin. Latin is the official language of the Catholic Church.
Most Diocese WEB SITES in the USA – do not easily – show which Parishes also include the Latin – Extraordinary Form of the Mass.
(One would have to click on every individual Parish to find an EF Mass – which is ridiculous.)
Therefore I noticed as stated on the Diocese of Las Vegas web site that heretical groups calling themselves “Catholic” are growing exponentially.
Because the Diocese is not doing its job in serving ALL legitimate Catholics.
Each Diocese has an obligation to let local and visitor Catholics know on their Diocese and Parish web sites:
1) where they can find “EF” Masses,
2) and also “OF” Masses in various languages other than English.
Or they can expect heretical parishes to keep growing.
This is the Dioceses own fault in many cases for withholding important and legitimate information.
This Church looks gorgeous! What beautiful stained glass windows! Bob One thank you for posting the website. The photos there are great and it seems to be a wonderful vibrant parish.
