Names of priests The parish combines two churches, St. Benedict and Sacred Heart. Fr. Claudio Cabrera Carranza, pastor. Fr. Nicholas Milich, an older visiting priest, celebrates the Sunday Latin Mass at Sacred Heart. He is an excellent homilist, strongly pro-life and knows his Greek and Latin. He is also a talented writer and has contributed to Latin Mass magazine. Fr. German Rodriguez, Fr. Dennis Peterson, Fr. Hughes Beaugrand, parochial vicars. Fr. Heibar Castaneda, in residence.
Music The Latin Mass has a schola.
Special activities Schola, Legion of Mary, Our Lady of Bethlehem Homeschoolers (many in the parish with children are homeschoolers), Support the Missions in Africa society.
Fellow parishioners Those devoted to the Latin Tridentine Mass. It is now the only site in the Monterey area that offers the Latin Tridentine Mass with permission from the local bishop.
Parking There’s a lot alongside the church, and ample street parking.
School Yes, pre-K through 8th grade. The school is located alongside Sacred Heart Church.
Additional observations Sacred Heart Parish is a historic community, established in 1877 with 12 families. It was staffed by both Spanish and Irish priests in its early days. It has since merged with St. Benedict Church, about 4 miles away. Restoration work to the interior of the church will continue as the Latin Mass community settles in (first Mass was May 22, 2016).
So sad that this is the only church offering the TLM in Monterey diocese. That is the way that the Vatican II Zombie-Liberals like it, keep the Trads in a small group and watch them constantly, disturbing any growth of Tradition if it gets too sizeable.
Only a little longer now and the institutional Catholic Church, as we used to know it, will be gone. Time to find a good bishop or a holy Traditional order and live nearby.
I’m too far way for Hollister. I made the decision ~6 months back to start attending SSPX St Aloysius in Los Gatos. Never looked back. Monterey diocese NO is a wasteland, IMO.
Unfortunately Fr. Milich is retired now and no longer celebrates the Latin Mass for Sacred Heart Church, one of the parochial vicars says the Latin Mass now. Fr. Milich is sorely missed.
sadly for many people this isn’t a church worth driving to on Sunday anymore, the word is that for the last year or so many people that where with this Latin Mass for many years have left
We love the TLM and Fr Beaugrand is a blessing to the Catholic community. It is worth the drive.
