Additional observations St. Mary’s is a parish of the diocese of Stockton. Mass was first celebrated in Oakdale in 1874; St. Mary’s was established as a parish in 1902. The current church was built in 1952, after the previous church burned down in a fire the year before (watch the 1952 dedication of the church under construction here). Oakdale today is a small city of about 23,000, near Modesto.
It’s a pretty church, with traditional art and architecture. In the arch above the entry to the sanctuary, near the ceiling, look for the image of Mary of the Annunciation; it includes the prominent image of a snake, symbolizing Satan, whose head Mary symbolically crushes by her fiat or yes to God’s will. Also, if you look up at the crown molding you’ll see an image of oak leaves surrounding the church representing the community of Oakdale.
Take an online tour of the church here (starting at 7:05); see a photo of the altar that parishioner Dan Costello took which he believes includes a miraculous image of the face of Christ.)
