Father Joseph Illo, paster of Star of the Sea church in San Francisco, gave a 13-minute homily on Sunday, January 12.

Families, wrote John Paul II, are a necessary good. Indispensable good for society.

In 1960, there were 220 baptisms a year in this church. By 1975 they were down to less than 100. Today there are about 10. Many city parishes haven’t had a baptism in years.

In 1960 in this parish, there were 70 weddings a year. Today the average is 8 a year.

Baptize early. The Mitchell family came to me – they had planned their newborn born on January 1 to be baptized February 1. Mom talked to me after Mass; they’re moving it up to Saturday.

Get married early and often- well, only once. I want all of you men to be married unless you’re going to be priests. Do what it takes, convince the women.

It is easy not to marry. That’s what Peter says. Christ says not all can do this.

Many are choosing not to marry or through contraception not to receive the children that God gives them .

Mary was hurt when Jesus went His own way in the temple in Jerusalem. She did not understand but laid these things on her heart. Jesus submitted to His parents’ authority. None of the Holy Family insisted on his rights.
