Additional observations St. Joseph is a parish of the diocese of Sacramento. It is a historic church, established in 1855 during the Gold Rush era. Its 100-foot steeple has made it a prominent landmark in the community. In the decades before the establishment of the diocese of Sacramento in 1886, it served as the cathedral church for the Vicariate of Marysville and the diocese of Grass Valley. It is built in the neo-Gothic style, and has beautiful architecture and art. Highlights include its 15 stained glass windows (installed in 1899), historic pipe organ, and traditional statues. St. Joseph was once home to the many Irish and German immigrants who came to California in the 19th century. In recent years the church has undergone extensive maintenance and restoration, including replacement of its deteriorating steeple and repair of its stained glass windows.
