Additional observations Holy Wisdom is a parish in the Byzantine tradition, of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy (Diocese) of Saint Nicholas of Chicago, which includes parishes in the western U.S. Although it is not a Latin rite parish, its bishop, Benedict Aleksiychuk, is in union with the Holy Father. While the Ukrainian Catholic Church dates back centuries, it first came to California in the 1950s when immigrants fled Communism and the destruction of much of Ukraine during World War II and settled in the state. Holy Wisdom was founded in 2002 as an English-speaking community in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic tradition.
Really faithful Catholics, those…Shunned by their eastern orthodox brethren as apostate and grossly misunderstood and often dismissed by their Latin brethren.
But they hang right in there. Major respect for them…
A priest at a church called Holy Wisdom was giving a sermon on the importance of humility. He said, “My dear brothers and sisters, we must always remember that we are not better than anyone else. We are all sinners in need of God’s grace. Even I, your humble priest, have many faults and weaknesses. For example, I sometimes struggle with pride, envy, and anger. And I also have a terrible sense of humor. In fact, the only reason I’m here today is because the bishop thought it would be a good joke to send me to Holy Wisdom.”
I like your story and I am glad to see some real Catholic virtues discussed.
If there is a Taco Bell nearby, it’s the perfect setup. Mass in the morning, Taco Bell for lunch. Maybe a Ukranian taco?
