Additional observations The first church in Keuterville was built in 1886 to serve the German farmers in
the area. It was called St. Peter’s, then Sacred Heart Church and eventually Holy Cross. A priest would
come into the area periodically for Mass; the people would still gather in the church for prayer when a
priest was not available. A second church was built at the site in 1897, but it was destroyed by fire in
1911. A third church was built in the same year, the church which stands there today. It has a
beautiful, historic interior, including a traditional altar made in Germany. It came under the oversight of
St. Mary’s Parish in Cottonwood in 1992 (which is now part of Tri-Parish Community) so they could be
served by a single priest. The historic Benedictine Monastery of St. Gertrude is nearby.

It would be quite a drive from California to reach this church.
