Names of priests Father Andrew Bartus & Father Jack Barker. Father Bartus is a former Anglican priest who was ordained a Catholic priest in 2012. He is married with a child. Father Barker is the recently retired pastor of St. Martha’s Parish in Murrieta. They are two of many Anglicans who have looked to Rome after the liberalization of the Anglican/Episcopalian church. Father Barker was among the first Anglican priests to be ordained when the Anglican Use first began; in retirement, he is writing a history of the Anglican Use and Ordinariate within the Catholic Church. Both are orthodox, and deliver good homilies. Typically, you’ll see Father Bartus for Sunday Mass, and Father Barker for weekdays.
Special parish groups/activities Adoration on 2nd Thursdays 12:30 – 3:50 p.m.; Theology on Perk on first Sundays, 9:45 a.m.; Sunday School 9:45 a.m.; small groups for women, men, married young adults and singles; Theology on Tap (hosted by Blessed John’s at Valiant Brewing); Young Catholic Professionals.
Music No music on weekdays, but Sunday Mass is a high liturgy (“smells and bells”), with traditional English chant and hymns, accompanied by an organ. The priest celebrates Mass ad orientem (“to the east,” or not facing the congregation).
Parking The church is to the rear of the front entrance of the Busch law firm; it has its own separate entrance. The outside is a commercial building, but inside the long, narrow chapel houses some beautiful religious art. Park in the firm lot on Sunday; there will be plenty of parking. On weekdays, the firm lot is crowded, so park in the lot across the street (at Bardeen Ave. & Dupont Dr.).
Acoustics It’s a small chapel, so it is easy to hear, even without a PA system.
Cry room No.
Additional observations Blessed John’s is a mission church of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. On January 1, 2012, Pope Benedict established the ordinariate for groups of Anglicans in the United States desiring full communion with the Catholic Church (for additional information, visit https://www.usordinariate.com/). The parish is named for Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-90), the famous English cardinal who left the Church of England and joined the Catholic Church in 1845. Similar ordinariate parishes can be found in communities across the country.
Thank you CCD for this information. I often travel up those areas. I have visited St John’s where the Norbertine priests says mass, you published their info here In the past and I was happy to have your website info on Church worth driving to. I was in Stanford CT a few months ago, i didnt find any recommendations on your site but I found a beautiful Cathedral there. God bless you for these postings. ☺
Fr. Barker was not only “among” the first priests to come over, but in fact was a critical voice with Rome to allow the pastoral provisions to ordain Anglican priests. He is exceptionally intelligent and his homilies are dense yet powerful. He is also proponent of sacred music. Excellent priest.
