Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, gave a 12 1/2-minute homily on Sunday, October 11.
I’m often tempted during the 7 am Mass about breakfast and during the 6 pm Mass about dinner. San Francisco is a foodies’ paradise. No mediocre restaurant survives here.
In the first reading, we hear that on Mt. Zion the Lord will provide rich foods. David, Solomon, Hezekaiah, Josiah gave great feasts here. But these are liturgical – after sacrificing an animal. The food we take is the food of affliction. Psalm 23 refers to an imperfect meal; this is still true. Every meal we take here is only a foretaste of the heavenly meal.
The Gospel today about the wedding feast is over the top. The host invites guests and inexplicably all the guests refuse. A second time the host sends out invitations and the servants are abused. Finally guests come and one guest is not properly attired.
The wedding banquet is this Mass. Once we are here, we must allow the Lord to clothe us in His righteousness. Maybe that means going to confession. We must surrender control to God’s laws. We must allow God to transform us.
