Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, gave a 12-minute homily on May 10.

Good to see so many people going to confession. Makes the Holy Eucharist valid, since you have to be in a state of grace. We’ll have to add another priest.

Our civilization depends on motherhood. If there is no mother, there is no home. We depend on our mothers for showing us what it means to love. Receiving a child and giving love. It is not as the yard signs say, ‘Love is Love’. Motherhood is tangible, conceiving, nursing, nurturing to adulthood.

God says ‘Love Me’ five times in today’s Gospel. Willing the good of the other is Thomas Aquinas’s definition of love. The love of a mother is the love that Christ gave on the cross. Obedience is love; you will trust God if you love Him. ‘Love is Love’ is just saying ‘Whatever’ – whatever my impulses say.

Jesus says I will send you another advocate. He is our first advocate. Jesus is our defense attorney before Satan. But He sends another one. ‘Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful.’ He tells the truth in a world of lies.

It’s hard to accept this divine dimension of our being. That we are dependent creatures, that we don’t make our own laws, that we don’t make our own reality.

The commandments are the objective markers of God’s love. Archbishop Sheen wrote a book in the 1950s called The World’s First Love about Mary’s love. We love God best when we love Him through the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
