Our Lady of Good Success[/caption]
Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea church in San Francisco, gave an 18-minute homily on Sunday, February 2.
This is the last day of the Christmas season. 40 days after the Child was born, He was brought into the temple. This is also called the Churching of the Woman after childbirth.
Women, since Eve, suffer from their fertility. This suffering infuriates feminists. This suffering makes us men indebted to women for their bodily sacrifice. Will women accept this reality as a gift from God?
What can we men do? We must gladly bear the bread-winning.
Mary went into the temple and was purified for us all. We must continue to pray and sacrifice with her.
Our Lady of Good Success was an apparition in Quito, Ecuador in 1610.
Successo (event) referred to Jesus’ presentation in the temple. Our Lady offered her son as Abraham offered his son Isaac. These apparitions prophesied events which came later.
Mary revealed the great heresies that would come in the 20th Century. Crimes against children mainly. A worldwide campaign against chastity.
The fundamental cause of few vocations in San Francisco and New York is the abuse of children, including abortion.
Our Lady is our protection, the Holy Eucharist is our strength.

Christmas season ends on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which was on Sunday, January 12 this year. We’ve been in ordinary time since January 13.
I don’t believe in the alleged apparition at Quito.
Stick to the post-conciliar liturgical calendar. Stick to public revelation.
I have always questioned the alleged Marian apparitions in Medjugirje. And the apparitionists do not seem to be holy. Plus, several of the priests associated with Medjugorje have been found guilty of clerical sex abuse– a horrible thing. I had long ago attended a big presentation given by a priest Fr. Jozo Zovco, O.F.M., and the young apparitionists– (not sure of the current status of his case) — very disappointing. Yet, the Church has partially approved the apparitions, and has confirmed that much good has resulted. Same thing with Our Lady of Good Success. I have always participated in Novenas to Our Lady, under her various titles– if it seems reasonably accepted, or partially accepted, by the Church, and is held in a parish, and is approved. If it is not an approved devotion, then I decline to participate. Many good saints were not put into the post-Conciliar calendar, for lack of room. But they, and their devotions, are always good. The Catholic Church really has millions of saints! Including many new ones, that the Church wants to emphasize, along with their devotions– and put on the newer calendar. And every country has its special regional saints, to whom special devotion is given. Here is the Wikipedia source on Our Lady of Good Success, which is very popular among Latinos. Not sure if it presents a more factual, accurate view, not a view put forth by an enthusiastic Catholic who loves this religious devotion. I am sure that information is also found online, from the Vatican. I think this devotion is good to participate in– many have received wonderful graces, healings, and favors, and prayers answered, due to this religious devotion and Novena– same as all the other popular, Church-approved Catholic devotions and Novenas. I think the prophecies of Our Lady of Good Success are very interesting, and seem startlingly accurate.

Traditionally, the Christmas season still ends on Feb. 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation in the Temple. Catholics view it both ways, doesn’t matter. I still view Jan. 1st as the Feast of the Circumcision, performed eight days after the birth of Baby Jesus– according to Jewish laws. The new name of the Feast Day makes no difference. It is a historical fact. And the traditional, Jewish rite of the Presentation in the Temple, of Baby Jesus, 40 days after His birth– closing the Chrustmas season of the Birth of Christ– is also a historical fact. It is also called the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the historical Jewish ritual required for Mary, and all Jewish women, after childbirth), the Churching of Women (after childbirth), and Candlemas– with the traditional Blessing of Candles. Other Christian churches — such as Orthodox churches– also acknowledge these historical events, with their own religious rites and traditions. The newer calendar will be changed again– there is always something new that the Vatican wants to do with it. Add new saints, new Feast Days, etc.
Hmmm. Tradition might point to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd as the end of Christmas season. Fr. Illo gave his homily on February 2nd.
Tradition was updated, dude. Really. Feb 2 is no longer the end of the Christmas season. Hmm.
This is why the Church cannot allow the TLM to be celebrated anymore. The Church cannot have two conflicting, contradictory liturgical calendars if it is to be unified. The Roman Church cannot have two conflicting liturgical rites celebrated. Vatican II happened, and the result was that the 1962 Missal was replaced with the New Mass. One rite, one liturgy, one calendar. End the TLM.
This is an excellent point. We can’t have people looking at the pre-Vatican II era and saying that’s the way it should be today because that was the “traditional” way of doing things. Traditions grow and evolve and change. What was the case in 1962 is not necessarily the best it could be, and it’s not necessarily the way it should be, and it’s not the way it will always be. There is a new “tradition” now. There will be newer “traditions” in the future.
Can we please have clarity in the church about these simple things? The dates of the Christmas season would seem to be very simple.
This is church teaching about the Christmas season, taken from “General Norms for the Liturgical Year”:
33 The season of Christmas runs from Evening Prayer I of Christmas until the
Sunday after Epiphany or after 6 January, inclusive.
38 The Sunday falling after 6 January is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
So the church teaches that Christmas season ends on the Sunday after January 6, not until February 2.
Nothing was changed. Tradition is historical, you cannot foolishly try to change history to suit yourself. There are different ways to arrange the Church calendar. It is often changed to fit the needs of the Church’s current pope and prelates– but that does not change the facts of history. Both Church calendars, and both forms of the Mass are accepted in the Church. Yes, we can say, historically, that the celebration of the Nativity of Chrst (or nativity period of a Jewish baby) ends at the Purification of Mary and Presentation of Baby Jesus in the Temple, 40 days after the Birth of Baby Jesus– because that is an actual historical fact, in Jewish laws and culture of that era. Catholics are followers of Jesus Christ, not “dudes.”
Medjugorge was totally made up and fake. I know people who were suckered into making pilgrimages there by the hope of rosaries that would turn to gold.
It is not our rosaries which we should wish to turn to gold, but ourselves. Although I’m a fine one to be giving Rosary advice to anyone. Slacker.
Medjugorje: I believe its more than fake and made up. I think there’s demonic involvement.byz
Folklore of the British Isles– — particularly in Ireland– contains a great many stories of ghosts, fairies, witches, spirits, elves, banshees, and even vampires and demons. In Celtic lore, there are also many unusual natural places of healing, such as the Holy Wells– Ireland has reportedly more than 3,000 Holy Wells! Celtic pagan spirits are said to inhabit these Holy Wells. Unusual, mysterious occurrences and even healings are said to have occured there. Also, there are many tales in European folklore, of unseen fairies, ghosts, witches, spirits, elves, vampires, demons, etc. There are also many hot mineral thermal springs in Germany and Eastern Europe, including Greece and other countries, containing minerals, said to be very naturally healing. And the Swiss Alps are said to be a place of natural healing, and beauty. Also, the Dead Sea’s highly-potent minerals are said to cure many maladies. Mexico and Latin America have similar ancient folklore and natural healing places. Not sure, but is it possible that a ghost or spirit in Medjugorje has been a trickster, impersonating Our Lady, and could the miracles be attributed to unusual natural qualities in Nature, there? If you examine the Rosaries that turned to good, was it due to a natural occurrence, that the metal appeared to turn to gold– and what natural qualities in Nature could have caused this to occur? Could someone’s jewelry or watch, made of similar materials as a Rosary, also turn to gold– or, appear to turn to gold— due to natural causes? Not really sure. Jesus used a concoction of mud and His own spittle to perform many healings. And God placed a great many natural herbs, spices, plants, healing waters, minerals, crystals, gems, and etc. on earth, with healing properties, used for thousands of years, by many different cultures. Even sunlight has natural healing qualitues, and people need a certain amount of it, daily, for good health. Sunlight helps the body produce Vitamin D, necessary for good bone and dental health, and it is good for immunity and healthy skincare, and good mental health, too. I do not think Medjugorje is, for me, a holy place to go on a pilgrimage to, to revere the Blessed Mother. But if others find her there, then that’s wonderful. I cannot say it is either true or false, really.
I never heard of our lady of good success. Is she the patron of gamblers? There seems to be a lady for everything.
Maybe Our Lady of MAGA in Washington, D.C. would be opportune?
There is a lot of edifying info on Our Lady of Good Success. It takes a little digging but it’s worth it. By name alone, one might be sceptical but do a little leg work. The alternative is to believe in the lady of bad failure.
Why are Latin American countries so poor and corrupt if they have Our Lady of Good Success?
This is a pet peeve of mine: trads use the label “traditional” to justify their myopic, preconceived notions of what Catholicism should be, and it’s always the old way. Never the new way. My pastor said that the Vatican II Mass is the new tradition of the church, so the Vatican II Mass is the traditional Catholic Mass updated for new generations. The Holy Spirit breathes where she wills and inspires what she wills the church to become. Ever ancient but also ever new, like in that Marty Haugen song “All You Works of God.”
“new tradition”
new? tradition?
Isn’t that an oxymoron?
Every tradition started at some point and was new. Just because something is a tradition doesn’t mean it’s sent from God.
No, “tradition” is a correct term, not some kind of modern fad for kids. The concept of Tradition is extremely important. It holds tremendous treasures of religion and culture, and the genius-level achievements– which are tremendous– of a civilization. Communists and other evil modern ideologies seek to eradicate Tradition in religion, culture and society, to control people and force them into atheism and slavery to a totalitarian regime. A Cultural Revolution is a horror– such as what occured in Russia, Eastern European countries, China, Cuba, Marxism in Latin America, and other countries. Evil. We also see it in Socialist-dominated modern countries, and in the wrongful globalization, and World Economic Forum. It is demonic, a horror beyond anything you can imagine. Many sick, demented, misguided, untalented liberal academics in Education, the liberal arts, and all artistic fields, and shallow, untalented religious liberals in Christianity, in the West, have been trying to eradicate Tradition, and destroy Traditional Marriage and Family, faith in God and Christian Morality, beautiful and holy, ancient religious beliefs and traditions, established by genius-level Christian Saints and their ancient, deeply holy and deeply religious cultures, and eradicate traditional education based on centuries of solid truth and genius-level contributions to literature, the arts, and all other fields. Today, I attended a program in which a young man came out with some weird-looking “artistic” creations he was presenting and hoping to sell. Presenting one item, he asked people what they see in it, how it affects them. A little old lady laughed and said, “Sorry, but that is garbage, not art.” Everyone broke into kaughter! Same thing, with tearing up all other excellent fields and the field of religion, too– all for stupid, brainless, modernistic experiments by untalented baboons. Tradition is holy. Tradition has carried the Holy Bible, the Word of God, and Salvation History for centuries, the story of the Coming of Christ dates back over 4,000 years, in history. It is extremely important, for mankind’s survival and thriving– and Salvation, in Christ– to revere sacred and holy Tradition– and laugh at and abolish the horrific lies and deceits of Modernism, afflicting the world since the latter half of the 19th century.
Yes, but traditions are not static and unchangeable. That’s the point of some of this discussion. Vatican II decreed that the tradition of the Church’s liturgy be revised. The liturgy was changed in some ways from what it used to be, and now the new Mass is the revised liturgical tradition. The prior tradition is obsolete, if you want to call it anything. The old Mass is not the traditional Mass; it’s the obsolete. defunct Mass. People might prefer the obsolete Mass, like they prefer an older model television set that is no longer manufactured, but they cannot claim that the old Mass is the Church’s tradition anymore because that tradition was updated and changed by decree of Vatican II.
The Church’s tradition continues through the Novus Ordo Mass. Anyone who doesn’t agree with that proposition isn’t a true Catholic.
I’ve been to TLM communities. They are like 1950s throwbacks. Like stepping into a time machine where Vatican II didn’t happen, and that’s the way the people want it to be. But Vatican II did happen. So you either get with reality or live a dying fantasy. The TLM is not growing. It’s actually in decline. There are not many Catholics who want to cosplay pre-Vatican II days.
Doesn’t Mary ever predict good times? Why does she always predict woes?
And some more recent and specific advice would be helpful. Quito and Guadalupe were centuries ago. How about appearing somewhere in America today and being specific about what we need to do to stop gay and trans and then describing the good times that will be ushered in if we do what she says?
Like, “My children, stop voting for Democrats because they are promoting the filthy sinful gay and transgender agendas. If you do this, then America will be richly blessed with prosperity and security.”
I hate to tell you but Democrats are not the only ones using IVF, abortion and transgender agendas. There are Republicans and others who are fine with those methods too. Some Republicans have had children by IVF or defend relatives who have had children by that means. There is no pure political party, just some in them worse than others.
I used to wonder about that, too. Why the constant dire and negative nessages, to saints and apparitionists, from Our Lady? But I noticed one important thing: the messages of Our Blessed Mother for mankind, all through history, are always the same, no matter where and when she has visited a saint or an apparitionist with her messages. Turn away from sin, leave the corrupt and sinful world, seek her Son, Jesus. Pray the Rosary daily. The remedy for sin is always the same—- much time spent in prayer, Scripture reading, fasting, purification, little acts of penance for sin, offered daily. And giving of self completely to God, and serving others for His sake. There is no other way to God and to a good and happy, fulfilling life– whether the date is 2025 B.C. or 2025 A.D. Give yourself completely to God, to His Son, Jesus Christ. And He will then give you everything—- and far more– the Gift of Eternal Life in union with Him, in Heaven! We will always have problems on earth, our “land of exile,” ever since Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden, by an Angel with a flaming sword, after committing the first sin, eating the forbidden fruit. This is a corrupt land, with many possible catastrophes. We must follow Christ faithfully, to find our way back to God. Though many disasters may befall us, we must keep on following Christ, giving Him our all, marching patiently through every painful disaster. The Christian must leave the world behind, and focus on Christ. And bring Christ to the suffering world, dark with sin, while no longer being a worldly person– being instead, a child of God, transformed in Christ, fulfilling our Baptismal promises. Re-read those promises, which our parents and godparents gave to God for us, when we were baptized as infants. That is the Christian’s way of life. It is always the same. Many of our saintly clerics and nuns, dedicated to Christ, throughout history, have followed this same, hard but sure pathway, to clean up terrible earthly sins. Are there evil infestations of gay pervert sex, prostitution, drugs, crime, etc. etc.? Read stories of our famous saints who were missionaries, who went to preach to these sinful people, condemning their sins, and demanding change. With persistent evangelization, fasting and prayer, they finally succeeded in clearing up the evils, driving out sin, converting thousands, hearing Confessions, getting new laws passed against terrible sins, setting things right in a region or country, so that all can live rightly and well, in peace and prosperity, close to God, following Christ’s teachings. Some were even martyred for Christ in their work for Him. That is the way it is done, always. The Blessed Virgin will always tell us the same thing, whether she comes one time or a thousand times, with her messages. She has really only one message.
I’m a sacristan at my parish. I looked at the ordo in the sacristy. On page 35 it says this: After the feast of the baptism of the Lord, ordinary time begins. Ordinary time begins on Monday, January 13 and continues through Tuesday, March 4.
It’s the ordo published by Paulist Press, that I bet every parish has in its sacristy. It is the official book that tells about the liturgical seasons, Mass dates, prayers, readings, colors and so forth. It’s the authority.
That should settle the argument.
A comprehensive theological education will show you that the Church frequently makes changes to everything, so don’t be surprised if you see more changes, as life goes along. The changes are made to suit what the pope and his top clerics at the Vatican think is best. Changes are on-going. It never ends. Was it easy for you, in 2010, to get used to the new changes for English-speakers, to the Novus Ordo text for the Mass? Did your tongue get tied, replying to the priest, “And with your spirit” instead of “And also with you?” Etc. Did you get the latest USCCB-approved translation of the Bible, used at Mass in the Lectionary? That gets expensive. It never ends!
Ya, like the death penalty used to be cool with the pope, but not anymore. Supporting the death penalty used to be okay, but now it’s a sin. Weird how things change so much.
I agree, there are some cases, perhaps not many, in which the Death Penalty is appropriate. Our first priority is to keep people and their children and loved ones safe from all harm. If you commit horrible crimes, like violent murders, you forfeit your freedoms and your human dignity. You must be punished– and God’s punishments are always much worse than mankind’s earthly punishments, in a country or civilization. I am not much of a Pope St. John Paul II fan, with his extremely naive concepts about society’s so-called great developments in the 20th century, which would then make the Death Penalty obsolete, unnecessary– and unChristian, of course. No—- I view contemporary society as very disintegrated, broken. ignorant, poorly educated, liberal-indoctrinated, brutal, barbaric, violent, dangerously leftist, immature, immoral and selfish, and backward in a great many respects. It is only in a very mature, caring, selfless, hard-working, law-abiding society, with a strong moral backbone, good citizens, a good education system, strong Marriage and Family, strong churches/synagogues (etc.) imparting virtues to the young, making good citizens, very Christian in many ways– a good, safe world, in which sin and crime is rarer– that the Death Penalty can then be realistically viewed as unnecessary and obsolete. Crime is never lessened or solved by modernistic inventions and gimmicks, and liberal ideologies. Many may call me “unChristian,” to support the older Catechism– but I strongly feel it is the best. I stand by my convictions. I grew up in a semi-rural area, with a yearly “zero” crime rate, friendly neighbors, good values, Traditional Marriage and Family, hard-working, church-going (or attending a Jewish synagogue) no one ever needing to lock their doors. Kids free– and always safe– to play and run all over the neighborhoods, mothers watching, nice, relaxed, slower pace of living. No child ever grew up to wreck their lives with drugs (unheard of) or crime, or anything destructive, leftist and horrible. Ridiculous.
