In response to President Trump’s comments today about the Hyde Amendment, SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser issued the following statement:
“For decades, opposition to taxpayer funding of abortion and support for the Hyde Amendment has been an unshakeable bedrock principle and a minimum standard in the Republican Party. To suggest Republicans should be ‘flexible’ is an abandonment of this decades-long commitment. If Republicans abandon Hyde, they are sure to lose this November.
“The voters sent a GOP trifecta to Washington and they expect it to govern like one. Giving in to Democrat demands that our tax dollars are used to fund plans that cover abortion on demand until birth would be a massive betrayal.
“President Trump has consistently supported the Hyde Amendment. He pledged repeatedly to make it permanent law, including in health care coverage, and one of his first actions upon taking office last year was prioritizing the reversal of President Biden’s Hyde violations.
“President Trump stated very clearly last year, ‘It is the policy of the United States, consistent with the Hyde Amendment, to end the forced use of Federal taxpayer dollars to fund or promote elective abortion.’ President Trump and congressional Republicans must follow through, not abandon, this commitment.”
As of 2025, the Hyde Amendment is estimated to have saved more than 2.6 million lives. SBA Pro-Life America opposes any health care proposal that fails to include Hyde Amendment protections and will continue to score against any effort that forces Americans to pay for abortions or abortion coverage. In October, more than 100 pro-life groups sent a letter to Congress urging lawmakers to stop taxpayer funding of abortion through Obamacare.
Nearly 6 in 10 Americans, including 58% of Independents, oppose domestic taxpayer funding of abortion.

hahaha. prolifers think abortion is all that matters. nobody cares about hyde but you. hyde will make no difference in the election unless prolifers foolishly don’t vote for republicans. like prolifers will vote for democrats in retaliation? lol. maybe republicans do have to be flexible about hyde. maybe trump is right. you don’t get everything you want when trying to pass legislation. fine, don’t vote republican in november and then let dems win the house and senate. would you really be happy with that outcome? i don’t think so.
I know of no “prolifers” who think that “abortion is all that matters.” Are you pro-life?
And, we may accept an incremental approach to reducing the number of abortions. But, we should not lose sight of the goal of protecting all human persons from conception until natural death. All office holders and candidates are imperfect (like each of us) and we oftentimes have to vote for candidates who are not ideal. For example, if our choice is between a candidate who will limit abortions and one who will promote abortions through birth, we may vote to save as many babies as possible. Abortion is not the only issue, yet it is a disqualifying issue. If someone is running on a pro-racism platform, that would disqualify him or her. There is nothing wrong with keeping pressure on office holders and candidates to keep their campaign promises.
American tax dollars must NEVER go to KILLING God’s beloved unborn children. Period.
To “ignorant” above… the point is that if Republicans do vote for tax dollars to be used to fund abortions, you will still vote for Republicans in future elections because you have no other better choice. And the Republicans know that. You’re stuck with them, whatever they do, because the Democrats are pure evil and you would never vote for a Democrat. And the Republicans know that.
“Stuck”- don’t tell others how they vote or will vote in future elections. Very childish. I am way too old for you! My first concern in casting any vote is to serve Jesus Christ in all that I do. I am NOT a secular person. And am NOT tied to any earthly human political group. In the late 1960s, I firmly objected to the Catholic Church’s Vatican II ideas of relinquishing strong religious and moral pre-Conciliar clerical leadership– and encouraging clergy and laymen to “make their own decisions according to their own (flawed human) consciences” (without Church leadership or consequences — i.e. excommunicate the “Nancy Pelosis” and “Fr. James Martins”) — and turn to secular political activism to guide society. Wrong.
I have always thought it was very sad, and very wrong, for young Catholic teenagers, not even eligible to vote yet– to become big leaders in the Pro Life movement in America– while great, big Cardinals usually sat home– and did nothing– saying that abortion is “too touchy” a subject, scared that so-called “Catholic” feminists would become enraged at them. In the pre-Conciliar era, great big Catholic Cardinals and Popes wielded religious and moral authority with ease. They were listened to– and respected. Even non-Catholics listened to and respected them (even those who disagreed with Church teaching). Our Church leaders, along with Protestant leaders—- got the job done, of denouncing sin and protecting society. No underage kids had to do that job, ever.
This would be a very sad state of affairs if Trump were to abandon the Hyde Amendment. With over 73 Million abortions worldwide America would be a beacon of light to the whole world if they ended funding for abortion. End Abortion Now! Adoption is the option.
Good for you, Marjorie Dannenfelser! So very dedicated! I was also very thrilled to learn that within the past few days, the.Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting voted to dissolve the organization, due to loss of government funding and political pressure. For decades, I have called and written (nicely but urgently) to them, complaining about deviant liberals trying to wrongfully indoctrinate, harm and destroy good American families and vulnerable kids, with terrible shows undermining our great country, traditional Marriage, Christian Morality, and good American family values. Can’t wait for this Satanic organization to be gone for good!
Republicans don’t have to take the prolife lobby seriously, and they know it. Time to start saying it. Big Prolife doesn’t have the influence that Big Oil has.
BIg Oil, do you oppose abortion?
Do you think the Democrats even consider what prolife people think?
Should those without the clout of Big Oil, Big Tech, Big Bureaucracy, Big Education, Big Media and Hollywood simply not try to influence public policy?
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed that he would not allow taxpayer dollars to fund abortion, signaling that House Republicans are unlikely to compromise on the Hyde Amendment after President Donald Trump recently suggested Republicans should be “flexible” on the pro-life policy.
“We are not gonna change the standard that we’re not gonna use taxpayer funding for abortion. I’m just not gonna allow that to happen,” Johnson told NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent Melania Zanona when asked about Trump’s remarks.
It’s very good that Speaker Johnson is taking this stand. It’s so sad that the previous Democrat House Speaker, a San Francisco grandmother, who calls herself a devout Catholic and receives Holy Communion in defiance of her archbishop, continues to push abortion through birth. Thankfully, some of our evangelical brothers and sisters have more clarity than many Catholic politicians (and voters), like Newsom, Biden and others.
A long time ago, I used to go and talk to the former (now deceased) longtime (1987-2011) Pastor (Fr. John Ring)– at Rep. Pelosi’s family church — as I lived nearby. I would try, in a friendly way, to persuade him to have serious discussions with Rep. Pelosi on the Catholic Faith– and to stop blindly supporting her— as well as Gavin Newsom, when Newsom was young– and many other “bad Catholic” liberal SF Democrats. He raved about them from his pulpit, and encouraged his parishioners to support them– and invited them to speak at his parish school. He and I would go round and round. He would accuse me of “being unloving” and wanting to rob these “bad Catholic” politicians of “making their own decisions according to their own (flawed) consciences.” (Vatican II-style) And I would tell him that killing unborn children is “unloving”– and is not a legitimate “decision” for them to make. Etc. I did this with other clerics, too.
Thank you for trying. You did the right thing by talking with the pastor directly. He is accountable for what he did and failed to do. Pray for his soul. He may be praying for Mrs. Pelosi and Mr. Newsom like he never did before.
It is always good to try to talk with someone who is really “wayward” in a friendly but meaningful way, and try to show them truth and common sense in the situation. You can do this with kids or grown-ups. Of course, they will probably sass you or insult you and insist that their way is “right.” With men in high positions– like priests and prelates– you may not get very far. But it is still worth it to try. And always laugh off their “sassing” and unkind insults– they are Christ’s “naughty” clerics– leading their flocks astray, causing great harm. Christ will oneday deal with them sternly.
I will relate one more incident. One day, decades ago, at the SF Cathedral, I had to go into the Sacristy to get something. We were having a big Mass, and then-Archbishop Levada (deceased) and several Auxiliary Bishops were concelebrants. I overheard Levada saying that a bishop of a different Diocese who got caught with many clerical sex abuse (gay sex) cases by police, was thrown in jail. Levada said that his clerical state was “too high” — Catholic clergy should never be put in jail, no matter what. They are “above” the public. I was shocked! I said, “Oh, no! Christ would surely want him to humble himself, take his rightful punishments, express sorrow for his sins, do his penance, go to prison, and tell his victims he is deeply sorry! And that he will never commit these terrible sins ever again!” Levada laughed. He disagreed. Then, he told everyone about that bad bishop, in his sermon, that day— and related– again– his shamefully wrongful beliefs that Catholic clergy are “too high” to be thrown in jail.
No one is above the law. Ordination does not excuse crimes or sins. As I wrote to you, “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” (3:1)
The Scene: Garden of Eden
The Character: The Serpent
The Dialogue: “Look Eve, you gotta be Flexible.”
Nowhere does Catholic teaching say that a secular government cannot have any government funds pay for abortions. Show me where any Catholic teaching says that. Since you can’t show it, because it doesn’t exist, it’s just your opinion. Your opinion isn’t dogma.
Taxpayers– Catholics, Protestants, and many, many others– should NOT be required to pay for evils like killing unborn children. In America, we have freedom of our religious beliefs. “Thou shalt not kill” (5th Commandment) Medical students should NOT be required to learn how to perform abortions, and practice performing abortions, in medical training. The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is an intrinsic moral evil, and the USCCB actively opposes all government funding for abortion. It is written in Canon Law– the Sanctity of Life must be upheld– respect life from conception to natural death.
Laws and policies of secular governments that promote racial discrimination, deadly Muslim jihads, Muslim Sharia law “honor killings” by family fathers, religious discrimination, abortion, Hitler’s killing of the Jews, ethnic cleansing, euthanasia and assisted suicide, etc. are all evil and must be vehemently opposed.
Take Two, I agree. Same with sexual morality. You gotta be flexible. Did God really say that sex outside of marriage was bad?
You can’t trust His word. You gotta find out for yourself. Follow your heart, your gut or other organs. I mean, who is against love?
Thank you, “J. Martin” for your support.
I knew I could count on your impeccable “logic.”
“Great Minds” …… you know!
