Pro-life advocates are hailing a growing boycott by construction contractors as a moral stand against New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s push for a new taxpayer-funded abortion facility.
Local businesses are refusing bids to build what critics call a “megacomplex” for late-term abortions in the state’s northern part, where most people reside.
Grisham’s $10 million taxpayer-funded project to kill more babies, slipped into House Bill 450 as part of a $1.2 billion capital outlay package, aims to construct a second Planned Parenthood center in northern New Mexico following a similar allocation last year for a facility in Las Cruces. The Democrat governor broke ground on the southern site in 2024 to attract abortion customers from Texas., framing such investments as “essential health care” despite the fact that abortions kill babies and hurt women.
But the funding has sparked fierce backlash from Republican lawmakers and grassroots groups, who argue it diverts resources from pressing needs like infrastructure, education, and public safety.
“This is about sneaking in an agenda while our state’s real needs are ignored,” State Rep. Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, said in a statement.
She described the provision as a “slap in the face” to New Mexicans facing crumbling roads, water shortages and underfunded law enforcement.
During debate, attempts to strip the abortion funding failed, leaving pro-life members in a bind.
“It’s a poison pill designed to force pro-life members into a corner,” Rep. Rod Montoya, R-Farmington, said.
Now, the contractor boycott is amplifying the opposition. Multiple firms have publicly declined to submit bids for the northern facility, citing ethical objections to participating in the expansion of an industry that ends unborn lives.
Pro-life organizations, including CatholicVote, reported at least three major contractors pulling out in recent days, effectively stalling the project amid a wave of public petitions and social media campaigns demanding transparency.
State Rep. Gail Armstrong, R-Magdalena, echoed the sentiment, telling the New Mexico Sun: “We need millions for roads, water, and law enforcement—not another abortion clinic.”
In response, the Southwest Coalition for Life is mobilizing supporters through an emergency webcast set for this week, featuring national and local leaders, former abortion industry workers and even participating businesses. The virtual event outlines a “proven model” that derailed a similar proposal in the past, while launching a statewide prayer campaign to safeguard women and preborn children from what organizers decry as unregulated “abortion up to delivery.”

Liberal Santa Fe Abp John C. Wester, SF native, does not strongly support Pro Life. He turns age 75– finally!– on Nov. 5th. A true Catholic Archbishop is needed tio replace him, who will fight for Pro Life, Christian Marriage (one man/one woman), reject feminism and LGBT garbage, and protect unborn children. I read that NM Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham– like CA Gov. Gavin Newsom– is supposed to be Catholic. The bad liberal Catholics all need to be brought back to the Church. No more clerical liberal social activists like Wester, McElroy, Cupich, etc. destroying our Church! Hope Abp. Wester will not return to SF after retirement– stay out in NM with the rattlesnakes– and do liberal social activist protests at famous NM nuke weapons sites.
Abp. Wester’s prinary liberal social activism is in nuclear disarmament– not Pro Life. He is also very supportive of immigrants’ rights, LGBT+ inclusivity, and advocates for more inclusivity in Church discussions on sexuality. When he was in SF, liberal then-Bishop Wester would support and defend any liberal, wayward, bad Catholic, with any “lifestyle,” in churches of the Archdiocese. He would not uphold Catholic teaching. Wayward, bad Catholics involved in parish or Archdiocesan paid roles, even in teaching or leadership– would get a good job, lots of support from Wester and then-Abp. William Levada (Levada held a more serious view of Catholic teaching, but would not enforce it) and lots of public praise and recognition– and all the Sacraments. Don’t question it, don’t complain– just drop out if you disagree. “Because it’s Vatican II” would be the reply to your question or complaint. Anybody could do anything they pleased. Here is a link to an article about Abp. Wester. He is Episcopal Moderator for the wayward, controversial, often-heretical AUSCP– Association of U.S. Catholic Priests. https://share.google/vh0mYYGkBsE52TsF8
A friend and I once, many years ago, declined to help then-Bishop Wester with a Priests’ Choir Christmas program– because the priest directing their choir was a convicted clerical child molester. Complaining about that did no good. Nobody cared. At that time, then-Abp Levada said that no priest or bishop should ever go to jail for any reason– too degrading– they are in too high a position. I said, “No, they should humble themselves before God, confess their sins, apologize to victims, and do their penance– and stand for their trial and sentencing, before a judge.”
We need an honest, authentically- Catholic Church, teaching Catholic truths and standing solidly for and enforcing Christian Morality– in the Church and in society. And Canon Law should be applied correctly, in all situations– no more “baby stuff” allowed, like the infamous Cdl. Cupich award to pro abortion Sen. Dick Durbin. That is what is needed, to help stop sexual sin and end abortions. No more nonsense. Preach and live by Christ’s true teachings.
Instead of kicking out good bishops for justly criticizing errant beliefs and policies of the Pope– like Bishop Strickland– why doesn’t the Catholic Church investigate bad Catholic priests and bishops who fail to uphold Church teachings, and are actively involved in dissident clerical groups like the AUSCP? Former SF Cathedral rector, laicized priest, Milton Walsh, has been living in the fashionable Santa Fe area. Once very popular, very involved with all the Sacraments with a great many Catholic families– Walsh was finally caught and confessed to his child molester crimes. There were also more clerical child molesters involved at that Cathedral.
Abp. Wester has publicly stated that he will not deny Communion to anyone— including “Nancy Pelosi”-style, abortion-promoting, bad Catholic, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. He has cited three reasons for his beliefs, stated by his corrupt, fellow leftist SF pal, Cdl. McElroy. Bad prelates should be kicked out of the Church.
How sad – this is insane. A megacomplex for late term abortions. End Abortion Now. Adoption is the option.
It will be built by a contractor who couldn’t care less about politics. I don’t think Rep. Rod Montoya (R) knows what a poison pill is. Poison pills are provisions in corporate shareholder rights plans to thwart a hostile takeover of the company.
Republicans are funding their projects where they are in control, and Democrats do the same where they are in control. That’s politics. Different day, same story.
Hold the line. May God prevail. Viva Nuevo Mexico!
It is scandalous that Archbishop Wester does not direct this abortion promoter to refrain from receiving the Body and Blood of our Lord until she repents, for her sake and his. She is eating and drinking judgment upon herself. “For those who eat and drink without discerning the Body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have died.” (1 Corinthians 11:29-30) It is cruel to allow someone to eat and drink God’s judgment upon themselves. The loving thing to do is to help her not bring down judgment upon herself. Should a Catholic who wanted to expand Nazi death camps be permitted to receive Holy Communion? What evil would someone have to perpetrate before Archbishop Wester would deny them Holy Communion? New Mexico has huge advertisements for abortion (and marijuana) as soon as one enters the state from Texas. The state has become an abortion (and drug) destination, in large part due to the “leadership” of Ms. Lujan Grisham. New Mexicans need many things. Killing more of them is not one of those. Please pray for her repentance.
When asked to deny Gov. Michelle Lujan-Grisham the Sacrament of Holy Communion, Archbishop Wester refused, citing three reasons outlined by his wayward liberal SF pal, Cardinal McElroy. Both prelates should have long ago been excommunicated, along with Cardinal Cupich and many others. Here is a link to one news story regarding this:
https://share.google/zevniUJfQ07aODCmL
Just think of the possibility of young Catholic girls and women having abortions, and thinking it’s “accepted by the Church”— because of bad prelates like Wester, McElroy, Cupich, etc. — and next, going to Mass and receiving Communion– without first going to Confession — thinking that their abortion was “acceptable.” What if the young woman held a job in the Santa Fe Archdiocese — or even were a Catholic school teacher, youth director, or a Catholic Charities social worker, helping young girls and women obtain abortions– because the Archbishop didn’t care?
Archbishop Cordileone denied Holy Communion to Rep. Nancy Pelosi in May of 2022. Before that, no SF Archbishop ever denied Rep. Pelosi Holy Communion. As we all know– other Catholic clerics– including at the Vatican– have not all agreed with, nor upheld, Abp. Cordileone’s decision. Yet Abp. Cordileone has followed exactly what is stated in our Church’s Canon Law.
In the link I provided in my comment of Oct. 28 at 3:18pm, the NM politician, John Block, who wrote a letter to Abp. Wester, asking him to deny Communion to Gov. Lujan Grusham— says he is a Catholic Christian conservative– and a staunch Trump supporter. I also read that Block is a devoted Sidewalk Counselor at Planned Parenthood, and has sought to end abortion. He upholds and preaches Biblical Marriage between one man and one woman only– and always votes agsivst NM gay and transgender issues. Yet it is also reported that Block has a “partner”– another gay NM politician– that sounds contradictory. Anyway, Abp. Wester’s public comments regarding Block’s request, clarify his position on not denying Communion to anyone. I have always disagreed with Abp. Wester.
I believe in the traditional family as the most important thing in life, along with the Church and your country. Traditional Marriage and Family is the core unit of society and of the Church. Money and personal success are of far less importance. Nobody should ever have to struggle alone, in life, deprived of family love and support. If people have disagreements, they should be taught love and respect for one another, and to look past differing ideas and opinions. If a son or daughter is gay, they should be loved always, and taught to live chastely– and help the family and community. If a job fails– or if a marriage fails– your family should be there to love and support you. Our country must return to this, for health, well-being, happiness and success for all.
Many young devout Catholics today, are marrying and raising large, traditional Catholic families, with good, traditional Catholic schools or home schools, and they are instilling good Catholic Faith and Morals in their children, working hard– along with other Christians– to raise a wonderful new future of Americans and of devout Catholics, for a much better future for our Church and country. Someday, we have the hope of a much better world. And the hope to someday end abortion.
Ms. Lujan can spend time working as a hod-carrier on her beloved project.
Pope Leo has not rehabilitated former bishop Strickland. That tells you all you need to know.
What does that have to do with this story? And, what do you mean by rehabilitated? Bishop Strickland is still a bishop in good standing and can celebrate the sacraments. He does not lead a diocese. There were legitimate issues of concern in the Diocese of Tyler when he was there. Do you expect Pope Leo to remove the current bishop of Tyler and replace him with Bishop Strickland? Bishop Strickland is a good, holy and courageous man. God bless him as he continues to serve the people of God. There were times when St. Paul didn’t lead a diocese, yet God used him mightily. And, rest assured, even if you see Bishop Strickland as “on the outs,” it is certainly not forever!
someone above started it by writing about Bishop Strickland
