Music St. Margaret Mary choir, under the direction of Paul York, sings at the 10:30 am Mass. There are other choirs as well. Music is sung from the classic tradition, as well as modern music in the classic style, along with Gregorian chant and polyphony. The parish has a Moeller pipe organ, refurbished and embellished in 2011.
Fellow parishioners Although St. Margaret Mary is a small parish, it draws families seeking its traditional environment from miles around. Its members come from different parts of the San Francisco Bay area.
Parking The lot is small and can fill up during Sunday Masses. There usually isn’t a problem finding parking on the street, which is generally safe during the daytime.
Acoustics Good.
Cry room None.
Literature In addition to the parish bulletin, you can borrow an English-Latin missal if you need one.
Additional observations St. Margaret Mary is a small parish that is conservative and traditional. It was established as a parish in 1922. It is the only parish of the Diocese of Oakland which offers a daily Latin Tridentine Mass. It has an attractive older church building, completed and dedicated in 1931. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest had previously celebrated Mass at St. Margaret Mar but now provides the Latin Mass at Most Holy Rosary Chapel in San Rafael (and hopes to have its own church in the future).

The 1962 Missal is not supposed to be celebrated in parish churches anymore. So, it’s not worth driving to. It’s contrary to Vatican 2 and contrary to liturgical law.
Note that it’s a “small parish”. The TLM is not as attractive as trads say it is, besides which the TLM shouldn’t be celebrated anymore. Young families do not flock to the TLM, as trads like to claim.
Which liturgical law? That of Benedict XVI, or of Francis? Since we now have popes contradicting each other, we can all claim the support of law, since the pope is the supreme legislator. I rarely attend the TLM, but I hope it continues to be available, as I hope the Anglican form remains available within the Latin Rite. It is simply not true that there is only one form of the Latin Rite (visit Milan to experience the Ambrosian Rite, a form of the Latin, or is that not legit after Vatican II?). And consider what you would say in the event, possible but not a certainty, that Leo XIV restores the interpretation of Benedict XVI.
Benedict’s law has been revoked by Francis. There is only Francis’ law now. So your point about there being two liturgical laws on the matter of using the 1962 Missal is incorrect. Francis reversed Benedict; one law was replaced with and nullified by another.
I hope the TLM is finally stamped out by Leo. Maybe the FSSP can keep it, but they should be prohibited from having any new members. If they want to be committed to the older form of the Mass, then they will have to die out. FSSP priests refuse to say the novus ordo Mass.
The Ambrosian Rite is not the Roman Rite. Just as it would be silly to say that there are two forms of the Ambrosian Rite, it is silly to say that there are two forms of the Roman Rite. There is one form: the current form.
Sorry, trads, the reformed Mass has supplanted the 1962 Missal.
Rage Bait
Website link is wrong. Use https://www.stmargaretmaryoak.org/ Anyway, waiting for the tantrum of from the Traditionis Custodes little boy, since it is a parish.
Website link fixed in story – thanks
The terms “ordinary form” and “extraordinary form” are no longer legitimate to use since Pope Francis voided Pope Benedict’s motu proprio that coined those terms. The correct way to refer to the two liturgical forms intended are, respectively: 1) the reformed Mass, or the Missal of 1970, or the Mass of Paul VI, or the Mass promulgated after the Second Vatican Council; and 2) the pre-Conciliar Mass, the Missal of 1962, the Mass of Pius V, or the unreformed Mass.
Only the Mass of Paul VI enjoys favor in the Church now. The Mass of Pius V is tolerated in a restricted manner and allowed by indult as a temporary pastoral accommodation until the whole Roman Church can be brought into liturgical unity in celebrating the post-Vatican II liturgical rites.
I hope St. Margaret Mary’s in Oakland will soon embrace the liturgical reform wholeheartedly and give up the preconciliar liturgy.
“…and give up the preconciliar liturgy.” I am always surprised by writers here who arrogate to themselves authority over what goes on in other parishes as if they were bishops themselves. I notice this authority extends to deciding the appropriate labels to apply to the forms of the Mass in question. At least the writer is honest enough to point out the rupture in liturgical reform caused by T.C. as Benedict’s Summorum Pontificum is also part of the liturgical reform. Pope Francis, with some slippery machinations, rejected liturgical reform when he heaped opprobrium on traditional Catholics and upon Benedict’s efforts at liturgical reform. I do hope Pope Leo can sort out this mess made by Francis, the “make a mess” pope.
Query for: Will Leo end TLM?
Will Leo end the special LGBTQ Masses around the country? I find those to be shocking.
My gosh, trads have such terrible arguments. Just get with the modern church, already. You can’t go back in time to before Vatican II.
” Francis reversed Benedict; one law was replaced with and nullified by another..” If Francis can reverse Benedict, then Leo can reverse Francis, and so forth ad infinitum, one pontificate reversing the previous. The Church’s reputation would then slide into the gutter, there being ongoing battles never to be resolved. Not a pretty picture.
Paul York is no longer at the parish as Music Director. They are currently looking for a music director to lead all choirs and grow the music program. I’ve been the cantor there for over 15 years and sing at the 8:30am and 10:30am masses.
I don’t understand the hate toward trad cats expressed on these comments. I’m not even a trad and favor the Novus Ordo Mass for practical reasons (i.e., I like being able to understand the homily). However, I have ZERO beef with trads or the TLM, which I think is beautiful and worth keeping. With that said, no one is forcing anyone to attend TLM or become a trad cat. The vast majority of Roman Catholic churches celebrate Novus Ordo, which means the TLM is only offered by a small number of churches as it is. Therefore, it makes ZERO sense to be so militant against it. So, to the haters out there, the TLM is here to stay much to your chagrin, so get a life and grow up!!
