President Donald Trumpʼs nominee for surgeon general, Dr. Nicole Saphier, kept her son, Nick, when she became pregnant unexpectedly at age 17.
Saphier, a radiologist who specializes in treating breast cancer, earned her medical degree and completed a Mayo Clinic fellowship after giving birth to her son in high school.
Saphier, a practicing Catholic, has shared that she had a deep connection to her Catholic faith while she was pregnant as a teen, even though she faced many challenges because she kept her son, even being asked to stop attending the teen Mass in her area.
“I lost a lot of friends when I made the decision to have the baby,” she recalled in a CBN News interview about her pregnancy.
“I was reading my teen Bible a ton during that time and I was trying to draw strength from my Bible,” Saphier said.
Her son would go on to be present at all of her graduation ceremonies going forward, and as an adult, went to flight school.
The announcement came at the end of April after Trump announced he was withdrawing the nomination of Dr. Casey Means, whom many pro-life activists saw as not solid on pro-life issues….
From EWTN News

God bless Dr. Nicole Saphier who showed tremendous courage and wisdom when at the age of 17 kept her unborn child and raised him as an unwed mother. She is a wonderful role model for all unwed mothers who are pregnant. She’s got all the credentials to be a great Surgeon General. I always end my comments with End Abortion Now! Adoption is the option. But in Dr. NIcole Saphier’s case she made an even better option raising the child herself. Dr. Gianni Beretta Molla pray for all unwed mothers.
Reply to Restrainer: Further to my comment, St. Gianni Bereta Molla is the Patron Saint of mothers, physicians and unborn children.
Young women with unplanned pregnancies are usually told allowing their child to live will ruin their lives. This courageous woman proves otherwise. Thankfully, the Lord strengthened her through the Scriptures, even when some in the Church were not supportive. May she serve our nation well.
For most women, it does ruin their lives. This one made it because her family was rich, which gave her a support system. Without that support system that money provided, no way would she have been able to attend medical school with a young child.
most women, are you saying that killing their babies does not ruin the lives of most women? Some of the most prolife women I know chose (actually, were often pressured into) abortion and it was the thing they most deeply regretted in their lives. Girls and women deserve better than abortion. That’s why we should be providing support for them when they’re in crisis pregnancies. Killing their children is not the answer.
And, what makes you think “her family was rich?” (Children from poor families are just as precious.)
I admire her fortitude and submission to God’s will at her tender age. She didn’t take the easy out, and now she is blessed with a wonderful son and a successful life. Deo Gratias.
Two wrongs do not make a right, and this beautiful lady made the right decision not to abort her son, and she seems to have brought him up well with the help of some good advisors. May the Good Lord and Blessed Mother continue to bless her family and give her all the .graces she needs to fulfill her duties well.
Unwed teen pregnancy highly correlates with poverty in adult life as well as juvenile delinquency in the children. Look at the ghettos.
So, do you think we should kill their babies so they’ll do well and their children won’t be criminals?
The issue is the breakdown of the family. Look at the statistics for those who grow up in homes without fathers.
As a society, we’re not willing to face the fact that children do better when raised by their mother and their father. We need to stop trying only to treat symptoms without looking at root causes. On this feast day of Our Lady of Fatima, we should seriously consider her warning that the final battle between God and Satan will be over marriage and the family.
The abortion of … “Unwed teen pregnancy highly correlates with poverty in adult life as well as juvenile delinquency in the children. Look at the ghettos.”
Reply to most women: It doesn’t matter if her family was rich. Regardless of that fact she still made the courageous and moral decision at the age of 17. Not too many 17 year olds would have that kind of moral clarity at that age. End Abortion Now! Adoption is the option.
For all the poster called “most women” knows, some of the those “friends” Dr. Saphier lost in the beginning were members of her own family. It might have been outsiders who did more to help her, including religious advisors. I personally know there have been such cases. Down thumbs do not matter, often they come from a guilty conscience.
