Washington Examiner senior political columnist Timothy Carney argued in a May 5 op-ed that effectively no pro-life Democrats remain in Washington, D.C., because support for abortion has become a non-negotiable position within the national Democratic Party.
Abortion, Carney argued, has become the “central organizing principle” of the current Democratic Party — a position he said every Democratic politician and official is expected to endorse.
The column followed Carney’s earlier report on what he called the “Democrat-Abortion axis,” in which he argued that the Biden Justice Department relied closely on pro-abortion groups while pursuing prosecutions against pro-life activists. Carney argued in his May 6 piece that the relationship between Democrats and pro-abortion groups extends far beyond law enforcement.
“Legalizing, subsidizing, and spreading abortion is a cause inextricable from the Democratic Party,” he said. “At times, the Democratic Party looks like an arm of the abortion lobby.”
Carney then pointed to several examples to support his argument that abortion has become a cornerstone of the party.
First, he called Democrats “absolutists on abortion,” arguing that one cannot find a Democratic politician who “is willing to tolerate any limits on abortion in any case.” He pointed to former Illinois Rep. Dan Lipinski as the last pro-life Democrat in Congress, noting that Lipinski lost his 2020 Democratic primary.
Carney also said Democratic governors have elevated abortion lobbyists to fill Senate vacancies twice in recent years, linking to a 2023 Washington Examiner report that Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., appointed Laphonza Butler, a leader of the abortion lobby EMILY’s List, to fill a vacant Senate seat.
He then noted that abortion groups “make up a huge portion of the Democratic fundraising base,” specifically citing the political action committee (PAC) EMILY’s List, which he said has spent an average of about $70 million over the past three election cycles.
“For comparison, that’s quadruple the spending by the National Rifle Association’s PAC,” Carney said.
He also pointed to federal funding for Planned Parenthood as a core Democratic priority, recalling that former President Barack Obama treated the issue as his “one non-negotiable item” during the 2011 budget fight.
Finally, Carney said Democrats’ main reason for seeking to expand the Supreme Court is to keep abortion legal. He pointed to an October 2024 video in which then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris said people were “losing confidence in the Supreme Court,” in part because of the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, and said there should be “some kind of reform” in the high court.
“It’s possible to be a tax-cutting Democrat, a pro-war Democrat, an immigration-restrictionist Democrat, and these days, Democrats are allowed to oppose boys in girls’ sports,” Carney said. “But a pro-life Democrat, in Washington, would be a contradiction in terms.”

As a former Democrat, with Democrat parents and grandparents since they came to this country, who cast my first presidential vote for Ellen McCormack in the 1976 Democratic primary and was a member of Democrats for Life for a number of years, I find this story very sad, yet true. As others have said as well, a Christian will never be entirely at home in any political party. I remain in one of the two major parties so that I can vote in primary elections, even if for less-than-perfect candidates. Of course, especially as a deacon, I endorse no political candidates (or party). Yet, I do vote with Catholic values in mind; life being foremost, without which other rights are meaningless. Lord, have mercy on us and our nation.
My immigrant grandparents supported FDR in the 1930s/40s– but did not become citizens until after WWII, right after I was born. The Democratic Party today, is the “Party of Satan.” They all must repent and return to God.
I feel the same way. I came to this country as a “Kennedy Democrat”. Kennedy was revered by us in my country as the first U.S. Catholic President, a man and a Party to admire and follow. There were many moderate and conservative Democrats then, and being pro-life was de rigueur. I was forced to abandon the Democratic party because it took a sharp turn to the left and went right off the rails. Democrats seem to have lost their humanity.
The difficult truth is that the Democrat Part is the party of evil, anti-truth, anti-human, anti-American, anti-Christian communism. We are in a civil war in this country, and Democrats are the enemy. Total warfare all the time everywhere unrelentlessly (TWATTEU) must be our stance against the Democrats.
If a pro-life Democrat in Washington would be a contradiction in terms lets all pray that they never gain power again. Contradict all pro-abortion Democrats at the ballot box. The Democrats are the Party of death and the destruction of America. This is a spiritual battle for the survival of America and its future generations. End Abortion Now! Adoption is the option.
Long ago, when I first realized that the Democratic Party was non-negotiable on Christian Morality– particularly abortion, and all other evils– I made the decision that I would never again vote for ANY Democrat, as the entire Democratic Party was truly anti-Christian. A “pro life Democrat” would receive ZERO support from that party. A great many “pro Iife Democrats” have left their Party over the years. That Party is terribly evil, and must be disempowered politically. All Democrats must repent and return to God.
It’s so simple. Just vote for R candidates. That’s literally all you have to do and exactly what you should do.
And anyone who is Catholic and a Democrat? You need to have your head examined and your faith examined.
An “R” after a person’s name is not enough. Some Republicans are promoting abortion, gay “marriage,” IVF and other evils. It would be best to vote for the person who most closely reflects Christian values. Yes, in many cases, that may be one of one particular major party. But, not in all cases. As our bishops have reminded us, ” As citizens, we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attachment to a political party or interest group. … The Church is involved in the political process but is not partisan. The Church cannot champion any candidate or party. Our cause is the defense of human life and dignity and the protection of the weak and vulnerable. The Church is engaged in the political process but should not be used. We welcome dialogue with political leaders and candidates; we seek to engage and persuade public officials. Events and photo ops cannot substitute for serious dialogue. … Our focus is not on party affiliation, ideology, economics, or even competence and capacity to perform duties, as important as such issues are. Rather, we focus on what protects or threatens the dignity of every human life.”
How can forcibly and lethally injecting genocide into a political party be a “cleansing?!” At “best,” it’s a purging, like that of Stalin’s “Great Purge” or “Great Terror” or the Communist Chinese “Great Leap Forward.” The bishops need to have the courage to address Governor Newsom, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Catholic politicians, regardless of whether they have a D or an R after their name. Currently, D means death. With Republicans, it depends; many, if not most, are prolife, including likely presidential candidates. (Pete Buttigieg, though baptized a Catholic, and his “husband” attend an Episcopalian church, the religion with which he now identifies. The Right Rev. V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, who left his wife and children for his gay partner, has acted as a confidant to Buttigieg.)
It can be hard to find good candidates for us to vote for. The Catholic Church cannot officially endorse any political candidates. However, there are several good organizations that try to help all Christians to vote for candidates with authentically Biblically-based Christian family values. No liberal leftist modernist “baloney” — just old-fashioned, Bibically-based (no exceptions!) Christian family values. One organization like this, the American Family Association (AFA) — is very helpful with local, state and national voter guides. They do not endorse anyone, they just state the facts and all info, for each candidate. Here is a link for their CA Primary election voter guide:

Republican candidate for governor, Chad Bianco, has affirmed support for Faith and Family values. He has stated his belief in Pro Life, saying he would defund Planned Parenthood, and that he believes Marriage to be a union of one man/one woman only. Republican candidate for governor, Steve Hilton, has similarly affirmed Faith and Family and Pro Life, Traditional (one man/one woman) Marriage and Family beliefs and values.
Reply to Republican candidates for governor: It seems California has two excellent Republican candidates running for governor. California needs drastic change in leadership now! Let’s pray and hope that Californians see the serious of the situation and change for the better. http://www.rebuildcalifornia.com.
President Donald Trump announced his support for Steve Hilton via Truth Social on April 6th.
What a horror is the post-Conciliar Church. They refuse to sternly uphold Catholic Faith and Morals, and excommunicate evil Catholic politicians who commit horrific mortal sins, such as promoting abortion– like Xavier Becerra, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, etc. And the post-Conciliar Church refuses to establish strong catechetical programs for the young. Statistics now reveal that the younger a Catholic is, the greater are their chances of having no concept of Christian Morality– and no concept of the Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament, either, or what the Mass is all about. And no concept of the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. There are very few Church weddings today. And lots of promiscuity, birth control and abortion– as well as gay sex and “marriage.” Scandalously– our Church leaders do not seem to care. I hope that the Satanic Democrat, Xavier Becerra, will not be elected as our next Calif. governor.
