The following comes from a July 7 story in LifeSiteNews.
The headline refers to the July 5 story in Cal Catholic about San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy’s proposing changes to the Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding homosexuality.
Pope Francis has named Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich to serve as a member of the Congregation for Bishops, the Vatican office that recommends to the Pope candidates to be appointed bishops. The move has alarmed traditional-minded Catholics since Cupich has shown himself to be an extremely liberal bishop.
In this role, Cupich will now exercise one of the most prominent roles in deciding who to appoint as new bishops in the United States. Cupich is said to have been hand-picked by Pope Francis for his prominent position as Archbishop of Chicago.
Cupich will join Washington, D.C.’s Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who Pope Francis named to the congregation in December 2013 while at the same time removing Cardinal Raymond Burke. Burke had been credited with influencing several strong appointments to U.S. sees in the latter years of Pope Benedict XVI’s pontificate. [Including that of Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco.]
When he was the bishop of Spokane, Washington, Cupich requested that priests and seminarians of his diocese not participate in 40 Days for Life prayer vigils outside abortion facilities.
In August 2015, in the wake of the Center for Medical Progress videos exposing Planned Parenthood’s baby body parts trafficking scandal, Cupich wrote that unemployment and hunger are just as appalling as killing children in the womb.
Cupich has openly contradicted Catholic canon law on giving Holy Communion to those in a state of mortal sin. Shortly after his appointment as Archbishop of Chicago, Cupich said that giving Holy Communion to pro-abortion politicians can be a good thing….
At the 2015 Synod on the Family, Cupich said that it is permissible for same-sex couples and the divorced and remarried to receive Holy Communion in accordance with their consciences.
Cupich praised Pope Francis’s exhortation Amoris Laetitia as a “game-changer” that could normalize his unorthodox approach to those living in situations the Church labels objectively sinful.
In 2002, when he was the Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, Cupich locked the doors of a Catholic parish during the Easter Triduum, one of the holiest points of the Catholic liturgical year, in order to prevent Traditional Latin Masses from taking place. The church was forced to hold its Good Friday liturgies on the sidewalk.
The article doesn’t match the headline. On the other hand, it is rumored that the new head of the congregation for the family will be an American. It brings almost automatic elevation to Cardinal. Should be interesting. I wonder what the Vagas odds on who it will be?
Cupich is bad news. It shows what kind of pope we have in Francis.
Carol, VERY TELLING. Particularly if you pay attention & follow the news. There is a trend in the appointments of Pope Francis. He has been busy putting conservatives ‘on the shelf’ until they retire/die & replacing them with those like himself, socialist/progressives. It was not a coincidence that Bernie Sanders was invited to the Vatican. Liberals are ‘in’ & ‘conservatives’ are out @ the Vatican. Only God knows why this shift is happening. Troubling to those of us still in the pews each week.
Continued…….Carol, BTW….I repeat this ‘on the shelf’ from an article with a quote where Pope Francis admitted this & the ‘shift to liberals’ too. So this repeats facts from the pope’s mouth. But watching his appointments shows he is backing up his words with action.
Absolutely, Carol.
Talk is talk, but hires and fires are policy.
Believing Catholics are in for a bumpy and increasingly scandalous ride.
Carol, what kind of person do we have in this Pope? He is preaching the Catholic faith, not the ultra-conservative Republican platform, which is, in most instances, not in support of the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Fish Wrap, which most on this site dislike, has an interesting review of the Democratic Platform Draft vs. the teaching of the Church. They are very different on the issue of Abortion and assisted suicide. Obviously! But most of the rest of the Platform is based on Catholic Social Teaching over the last two hundred years. Now what do we do? We need to stop mixing faith and politics to be different than ISIS? Maybe?
.
So, Carol, other than infanticide and murder, the Democratic Party does a bang-up job of simulating the Catholic Faith. Don’t be like ISIS, now, Carol!
Bob One, I think all that Carol was saying, is that the appointment of Abp. Cupich, is a reflection of Pope Francis’ beliefs. And both Abp. Cupich and Pope Francis are similar, in that they have both made comments that seem to be disturbingly at odds, with the Church! It is so sad, on the other hand– that good, orthodox, faithful, very gifted prelates, such as Cardinal Burke, and others- have been removed from leadership, by Pope Francis! What a shame, for the Church to be so deprived, of their gifts!
And the Demoncrats specialize in the killing of unborn babies!
Wake up — the problem ain’t the Pope.

There is a lot of bellyaching going on among Catholics about a continual string of ill advised comments from Pope Francis….
But the industry that is developing around this thought is dangerous on a number of levels. The industry of “blast the Pope for his confusing, conflicting statements” is dangerous. In just one line of reasoning, consider this — and this is just one danger:
The notion forms in people’s minds that everything in the Church that is wrong can be solved by the Pope, any Pope just ordering it to be fixed.
A little history on this score: Pope Benedict once famously told a…
Michael McDermott, maybe it is just best to ignore the Holy Father, and go on practicing the Faith, daily. Maybe he has too many press conferences, and maybe he is too much in the public eye.— I don’t know, for sure. However, many of his remarks are too disturbing! Before Vatican II, our Church had a definite hierarchy, a “chain of command,” with the Pope at the top. But Vatican II sought to change all of that, in favor of the Pope and bishops more equally sharing leadership. I think this created a big problem, because so many of the prelates became apostate, or even heretical! I will continue…
I will continue…So, with all of the “Vatican II freedoms,” many priests, prelates, and nuns were becoming apostate, heretical, and some became immoral, worldwide! The Pope no longer had his traditional authority, and all were “free!” “Brotherly”-style co-leadership was desired, with the Pope and his prelates. Poor Pope St. John Paul II said that he feared that if he tried in some way, to address and correct serious problems— worldwide dissent and disintegration of his Church might result, due to the power of the “silent apostasy” of his many wayward prelates, in his Church!
I think that the real underlying issue here– is self-delusions of “freedom!” If you join a religion, or if you train to become a priest or a nun– it is a big responsibility! One should realize that! It is very serious! Those who dissent, need to be HONEST with themselves, and leave! And their superiors also need HONEST LEADERSHIP! They need to expect that those under their leadership, are faithful and obedient, very responsible and mature! If not, then there needs to be an intelligent process, that must be followed, to remove that wayward individual, and return them to secular life!
Voris is building an industry wherein he paints himself as the only true voice of reason while he softpedals a Sedevecantist spirit. Pretending that the Pope is there, but completely incapacitated is to feign that the seat is vacant.
All I see from Voris is a lot of bellyaching that folks are increasingly looking at his absurd pretense of avoiding scandal by acting like there is no Pope.
WAKE UP – the problem ain’t JUST the Pope, but he’s a big part of it and ignoring that is doing little more than stirring up a vortex in a tea pot.
Sorry, but Voris is going after others much like NBC might go after CBS, ABC or any other perceived competition. And, sorry, but let’s get this straight. The notion forms in the minds of the…
… people that the Pope is a mere figure head who is seemingly drunk or out of his mind in appointing wolves into positions of power.
A little history here shows that Voris made an utter about face in his own discernment of the truth when faced with pressure, pressure for $$$$. And that, sorry, is much of what seemingly presses the Pope and others to do that which they should not. That is teaching a speck of truth only to fall short of the entire lesson. The entire lesson which is needed to navigate the reality of this crisis.
Time to blast Voris with his INDUSTRY of facilitating the very error he professes to call out. The Seat is not Vacant. So stop fomenting the delusion that it is. For that is just…
… as much an error as what Voris accuses others of committing. And what’s more, he knows it.
Time for Voris to stop competing by way of business model and rejoin forces with those who have been fighting the good fight for far longer than he.
BTW: He still has yet to provide proof that the Diocese of NY was going to smear him. Seriously. The dude does a lot to elicit sympathy for himself by smearing others. To include mandating a policy of the most ignorant ridicule and erroneous commentary to stifle and/or blackout any logical discussion of the absurd charges he makes when those with thinking minds challenge “his” party line.
I agree that Voris “coming out” was staged and the NY AD could care less about his sex life. Ho hummm…how many Catholic traditionalists were unchaste in..say..their college years. No story here folks.
The story here folks is the reality that Voris was onto truth and then backed off, especially backed off acknowledging that while he foments this violent storm against rabidly anti-Catholic behaving bishops, he neglects the reality that the Pope is at the head and is, in fact, bishop of Rome.
The only “goods” gotten on Voris are those attached to his purse strings. The same that hold him back from placing blame and pushing for action from the source. That being the Holy Father.
Cupich = DISASTER for devout American Catholics, and the future of our USCCB, and American Church!! What a SHAME!!
Now! Now! Gossip is a sin! There is more to the story with regards to some of the above incidents involving Archbishop Cupich. Some writers like to twist the facts a bit to fit their agenda!
The link of how Cupich forbade the Triduum in 2002 tells me all I need to know about this left-wing Archbishop. Pope Francis is to the Catholic Church what Barack Obama is to US. This appointment is like elevating Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. It will take decades for the Church in our country to recover.
I agree with Gratias, What Pope Francis is doing to the Church, Obama is doing to this country. I have lived with different Popes since 1940 and this is the only one that has and does make me feel a lack of aura in him, his Holiness, or his policies. The way things are going in these ” New Days Of Noah” I doubt we or this sinful country will have decades and it is also not wrong to speak out.
Did anyone happen to see a word about why Bishop McElroy may or may not be called to a higher position? If its there, sure slipped by me.
The goings on in the modern Catholic Church just keep getting curioser and curioser!
For those who have lost their faith or are losing it on account of the nonsense going on in the V2 Church where right is wrong and wrong is now right, take a step back and pray the rosary to Jesus and Mary to direct you on their path to the Roman Catholic Church. You may be astounded to see where they guide you and reveal everything Roman Catholic “as it was” to you. Enjoy your prayers and your journey home to Holy Mother the Church. :^)
