The following comes from an August 13 Angelus article by Kevin Theriault:
Los Angeles was founded 234 years ago, on Sept. 4, 1781, with a Mass and a procession, calling out to the Blessed Mother for her protection of the infant pueblo in the name of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, according to Mark Albert, founder of the Queen of Angels Foundation.
That tradition continued annually for a century before fading away. When the Archdiocese of Los Angeles celebrates the Fifth Annual Grand Marian Procession on August 29, it continues the revival of that tradition, honoring the namesake and patroness of the city, county, the archdiocese and cathedral.
“As a native Angeleno, it occurred to me that the vast majority of Angelenos don’t know the true name of their city. They think it is the City of the Angels. No. It is the City of the Blessed Mother Queen of the Angels,” Albert said.
He and other lay Catholic leaders in various religious orders formed the Queen of Angels Foundation to revive devotion to the Blessed Mother and honor her on the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Angels.
“We are the official archdiocesan sponsor of the feast, but it is also a civic celebration for the birthday of the city, so we try to bring the civic community together as well. We usually have about 40 or 50 groups that come together every year,” Albert said.
This year, a special votive Mass written for the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels discovered in archives dating back to the earliest days of the archdiocese will be celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez at 3 p.m. in the cathedral. After the Mass, which will also include a special celebration of the canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra, the Grand Procession will proceed to La Placita, the first Church in the area, where they will re-install the statue of the Blessed Virgin. There will be a benediction at La Placita with mariachi bands playing in the plaza.
“No other event brings all the constituents of our diverse archdiocese together in this way,” said Albert. “You have rich and poor, every race and ethnicity, and all the different religious orders come together for this. It shows the unifying power of the Blessed Mother. She can surmount every obstacle, heal every wound and bridge every difference. She is a unifying figure. She’s bringing the community together to reconcile our differences, heal our wounds and bring us together in joyful union to lead us ever closer to her son.”
“They think it is the City of the Angels. No. It is the City of the Blessed Mother Queen of the Angels.” Is it mere coincidence that as Catholic Radio spreads throughout California, the people respond with renewed vigor and devotion to the graces extended through Our Lord’s Blessed Mother? I think not. Rejoice, O daughter, O highly favored one as you reclaim the great city of Los Angeles for your own!+
The city of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels was once very Catholic. When Cardinal McIntyre became sick, the front pages of the LA TIMES highlighted this in huge bold print. Today the Church, and religion are treated with contempt and disdain. Because of Vatican II the Church lost much of her respect, and her influence was replaced with humanism, materialism, relativism and atheism.
Possibly. On the further hand, she lost respect when she fondled little ones. Once you go there, you don’t go back in the mind of the people or the press.
….all the more reason for Church men to fully and humbly engage with teaching the Faith as it has been handed down and give up these attempts to compromise with that which is against God and what the Church has always taught.
Relying upon political/human means has, especially in the example you provide, YFC, shown to produce rotten fruit.
Thank God we have been given Our Lady as a truly, loving Mother who desires our salvation more than we do.
…and YFC, ‘She’, that is the Church DID NOT FONDLE LITTLE ONES.
The Bride of Christ is pure. Let’s be clear. It is Church men who negate who and what the Church is that are the defilers. Much like they are the defilers of the very clear truths they have received. The very same ‘they’ give over to Pilate for crucifixion.
She, Holy Mother Church, stands victimized along with the little ones, YFC. Much like Christ stood victimized while the crowd, whipped up by traitorous souls who revel in confusion, sought the release of Barabbas – that is they sought the release of SIN. (Much like the agitation for these October Synods are attempting to do.)
Excellent, Ann Malley! “It is Church men who negate who and what the Church is that are the defilers.”
Subway Sandwich is immediately trying to distance itself from the name and face of “Jared” but Church men still allow Dale Fushek’s “Life Teen” name to be associated with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and Catholic teens. ABSURD! More evidence of leadership asleep at the switch. There has been a self-destructive rush to compete with the changing novelties of Protestantism instead of picking a solid Catholic identity name for Catholic teens.

Shame on us for allowing the name “Life Teen” to still be associated with Catholicism. Talk about a continuation of shooting oneself in the foot while remaining insensitive to those who were abused.
And those doing the fondling were flaming pederast homosexuals.
Because the seminaries catered to sodomites, many undesirable men were ordained to the priesthood. Without prayer and mortification sin takes over one’s life, and he chooses evil instead of good.
After the end of Spanish and Mexican rule in Alta California, I wonder what percentage of the population in Los Angeles was Catholic.
