A man accused of intentionally setting a fire at St. Patrick’s Church on Monday night has been arrested.
According to the Watsonville Police Department, Alberto Melgoza, 36, was arrested Tuesday morning. Melgoza was arrested and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail. Police noted Melgoza was arrested four months ago for allegedly setting Ave Maria Memorial Chapel on fire.
“It damaged two stations of the cross, one stained glass window, probably the organ console, and potentially the digital piano,” the church said in its announcement to the public.
In addition to the fire damage, the church has to deal with damage from firefighters who doused the fire. “Daily services will be held in the Serra Center. Weekend services will be held in the gym. Please pray that we have patience and resilience as we suffer this injury together,” the church wrote in their announcement.

My God bless this parish and grant repentance and healing to Mr Melgoza.
But first, throw Mr Melgoza in jail, where he can repent at leisure, and also be prevented from any further arsons. There are now so many Anti Catholic crimes committed in the US, that stronger action is needed. We can pat Mr Melgoza on the head, and pray for his soul, while he is serving time in jail. This will also allow him to reflect on his crimes, and perhaps cause a chance of mind.
Family and friends say Alberto, known warmly as “Sparky,” was one who could always light up a room.
I am waiting for a report that says, “Arsonists sets fire to church and fire lights up arsonists.”
Evidently, thumbs down did not get the sarcasm.
