In two decrees released on March 25, the Vatican has given approval for seven new Prefaces to be used in the Extraordinary Form (EF) of the Mass, and given instructions for the observance of new feast days in the traditional calendar.
In the decree Cum Sanctissima, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith details how the saints canonized in the years since 1962 (when the old Missal was promulgated) may now be included in celebrations using the EF. The decree notes that these saints may be honored on the days that are marked as their feasts on the calendar for the universal Church: the calendar observed in most Catholic churches that use the Novus Ordo liturgy. However, the decree also notes that these celebrations are optional; communities that use the EF regularly may choose to continue observing their old calendar.
With the decree Quo Magis, the CDF adds seven options for Prefaces that may be used in the traditional liturgy for special occasions. Four of these—prefaces for the Angels, for St. John the Baptist, for Martyrs, and for the Nuptial Mass—are adapted from the prefaces for the same occasions that now appear in the Missal for the Ordinary Form. The remaining three—for All Saints and Patron Saints, for the Blessed Sacrament, and for the Dedication of a Church—had already been approved for use in the EF liturgy in Belgium and France; they are now approved for worldwide use.

Right. Folks, this generous decrees is from the same Vatican–the same Holy See–who some of you people bewail, attack, and deem as having no authority over the rubrics and rituals of the Church, certainly not with the Extraordinary Form, the Mass of All Time. Well, people, this gracious decree shows that the Magisterium, in particular the Holy See, indeed has ultimate authority over the liturgies of the Church, whether they be the Mass of Pope St. Paul VI, or the Mass of Pope St. John XXIII.
Jon, please stop the nonsense. Both you and I know that there have been some very bad things that have gone on at some of the newer masses that have pushed people over the edge into the SSPX, especially if they cannot find a decent new mass. Quite frankly, I would have walked out of any service such as the one with the Pachamama’s at the Vatican, after having been sorely tempted to go behind them and kick them in the “you know what”.
Again, Anne TE typically (or even advertently) manages to miss the point. The point here is that folks such as you should be more obedient, grateful, and indeed respectful of the ministers/shepherds God has chosen to lead His flock. Your attitude of always finding fault, of criticism, is of the evil one. Straight up.
jon, it’s good to hear that you accept the teachings of our Pope Shepherds, like Humanae Vitae and Evangelium Vitae. That you do not dissent from any of the teachings of the Church is a good and commendable thing.
Jon, I got angry because everyone up until that time but you had said something nice.about the article, at least I thought I had. But it seemed you just had to get your “dig” in to the SSPX, — to which I do not belong but am thankful that they kept the older Mass going when many others were doing all they could to totally dismantle the Mass. After all it was the past Pope Benedict who told us the Traditional Mass was never abrogated when some bishops and priest had clearly told us it was. It is hard to respect some people when they are clearly lying to you.
I need to clarify what I said in my post at 6:35 pm. I meant “tempted to kick the idolaters in the behind.”
Firstly Anne TE, check my comments above. Not even once did I mention your beloved SSPX. Secondly, the sorry typical narrative of “those bad bishops abrogated the TLM” has been debunked along time ago. It’s much more juicier and more intriguing to believe this “vast liberal-wing conspiracy” than to believe the truth.
Jon, see my misplaced post below in answer to you.
This seems to be a prudent action on the part of the Vatican by making these celebrations optional for use with the Extraordinary Form Mass. Some may choose to celebrate these more recent Saints and others may continue Mass precisely as it was prior to 1962. I think this is one example showing how unity does not necessarily imply uniformity.
St. Zelie Martin had a lace making business, and made the same type of lace that goes on some of the Traditional Mass vestments and altar linens I think. It seems she would certainly be a good saint for lace making and an appropriate saint for some traditional Masses and orders.
If my memory serves me well, I think St. Louis Martin was a clock or watch maker.
My guess is that exactly zero EF masses will have anything to do with these options. If yours does…run.
This negative attitude of Andrew’s is of the evil one, sorry to say. Think of it: the anointed shepherds of the Church whom God has chosen to lead His flock has given a great gift to the people who frequent the TLM, but people like Andrew despise and deride it. Sorry to say, but attitudes like Andrew’s continue to give this beautiful Mass, the Mass of the Ages, a bad rep. If people see that the TLM is producing attitudes like Andrew’s in those who frequent it, sad to say that people will just avoid it.
This negative attitude of Andrew’s is precisely why my wife and I do NOT take our family to the only TLM in our Archdiocese. I also know a lot of other young Catholic families who, like us, prefer the TLM but will not attend because of these bitter and narrow-minded attitudes. My experience of TLM-goers is that they do not show one bit of evidence that they understand that “our war is not against flesh and blood,” attacking priests and bishops and the pope and anyone else who “dares” to attend the Novus Ordo. I understand that there are some bad shepherds in the Church (which is being purified now), but the “us-versus-them” mentality has got to stop.
Having read your comments over the years, it was self evident what you meant.
That post was meant in answer to Jon’s post Match 29 at 3:05 pm. and somehow got posted in the wrong place.
A man’s character is not only shown by what he says, but also by what he does not say. As far as I know in all the time Jon has posted here, he has never denounced the idolatry that went on the Vatican Garden’s.. If not, why not.
Accusing the Holy See, the Vatican, of idolatry (a very grave charge)–as Anne TE has just done–is tantamount to sin.
jon, I’ll leave the judgment of Anne TE’s sins (and yours and mine as well) to God.
That said, do you approve of people bowing down before a Pachamama idol (the Vatican corrected an early statement that said it was an image of Our Lady) at the Vatican?
Or, the placing of such idols in a Catholic Church?
Pachamama is a goddess revered by the indigenous people of the Andes. She is also known as the earth/time mother. In Inca mythology, Pachamama is a fertility goddess who presides over planting and harvesting, embodies the mountains, and causes earthquakes.
When Pope John Paul II passed away, I was asked to be involved in and give my approval to a Hindu Prayer that started with “To Brahma and the gods”. The Hindu priests, I was told, would be saying it in the church, supposedly in honor of John Paul II. I refused to give approval to the prayer as written, and instead talked to two other priests, who served the Ordinary Latin Mass (Novus Ordo), Without my telling them the name of the other priest, they both told me I should not get involved with such a thing. I went to mass at the last priest’s church in honor of Pope John Paul II. Next I will post why I would not approve. (to be cont.)
(Cont.) I do not judge the conscience of the Catholic priest who asked my approval as his parents were converts from another religion, and I cannot judge Pope Francis’s conscience, but this went through my mind at the time.
In Christ’s warning to the church at Thyatira, he says, “Nevertheless I hold this against you: you tolerate a Jezebel — that self -styled prophetess – who seduces my servants by teaching them to practice lewdness and to eat food sacrificed to idols.” Revelation (Apocalypse) 3: 24.
Jon, can call me any name he wants, but, by the grace of God, I will not play that part.
