Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a beloved Catholic bishop and pioneering media evangelist, is among many prominent Catholics selected to be honored in the National Garden of American Heroes.
The garden was established by an executive order President Donald Trump signed in 2021, with the goal of creating a statuary park dedicated to honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to America’s history and culture. Although the initiative was halted by the Biden Administration, Trump reinstated the project following his reelection.
“We’re going to be honoring our heroes, honoring the greatest people from our country,” Trump said about the project at the 2025 National Prayer Breakfast. “We’re not going to be tearing down, we’re going to be building up.”
The project was launched in response to what the President described as recent efforts to dismantle America’s history and national identity through the destruction of monuments dedicated to figures such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr.
The National Garden aims to counteract this trend by preserving and celebrating the legacies of individuals who helped shape the nation. The goal is to complete the project by July 4, 2026, in time for the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Ven. Archbishop Sheen, whose influential radio and television programs brought Catholic teachings into American homes during the mid-20th century, is widely recognized for his role in making the Catholic faith accessible to millions.
The Archbishop is one of several Catholic religious figures set to be featured in the garden, including St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint and founder of the Catholic school system; St. Junípero Serra, the Spanish missionary who founded California’s missions; St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American saint; and Ven. Augustus Tolton, the first recognized African American Catholic priest in the United States.
Other figures include St. John Neumann, who expanded Catholic education in America; St. Katharine Drexel, who dedicated her life and fortune to serving marginalized communities; Archbishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States; and Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.
“[E]ach individual has been chosen for embodying the American spirit of daring and defiance, excellence and adventure, courage and confidence, loyalty and love,” Trump said in his executive order. “Astounding the world by the sheer power of their example, each one of them has contributed indispensably to America’s noble history, the best chapters of which are still to come.”
Also set to be featured in the garden are John P. Washington, a Catholic priest known for his heroism during World War II, and Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk and author whose works continue to influence contemporary spirituality.
The garden will also honor Catholics whose work shaped American society beyond the Church. Among them are John F. Kennedy, the nation’s first Catholic president; and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, a champion of religious freedom.
Clare Boothe Luce, a playwright, congresswoman, and U.S. ambassador who became a prominent Catholic intellectual, will also be honored in the garden. Following the tragic death of her only child in 1944, Luce sought spiritual guidance from Ven. Archbishop Sheen, whose counsel on grief, faith, and the search for meaning ultimately led to her conversion to Catholicism in 1946.
The list of American heroes also includes pro-life advocate Nellie Gray, founder of the March for Life, and Christopher Columbus, whose voyages helped spread Catholicism to the Americas.
In the realm of sports, the garden will feature Catholic figures such as baseball legend Roberto Clemente, football coach Vince Lombardi, and NBA superstar Kobe Bryant. The garden also honors Frank Capra, the acclaimed Catholic film director behind “It’s A Wonderful Life.”
From the Catholic Vote

This is a wonderful idea. It’s about time America honors it’s true heroes. Archbishop Fulton Sheen was amazing and ahead of his time. The list also includes pro-life advocate Nellie Gray, founder of March For Life.
Trump is a better Catholic than Biden.
Gave you a like. To be fair that’s a pretty low bar
President Trump is a better Catholic, as a non-Catholic, than many prominent Catholics. (Here’s looking at you, Nance).
My wife says that Trump is Catholic. I don’t think Biden is Catholic at all. We see Trump being persecuted for honoring Catholics and Biden who support sodomy and baby killing and isCatholic gets honored by the pope. This is totally upside down.
Yes, I agree with your wife on that! Loved President Trump’s speech last night— excellent! Now, let’s see Planned Parenthood get defunded. I think that is on Elon Musk and Pres. Trump’s list. Oh– and bless Shawn Carney, CEO of 40 Days for Life– some of his campaigns, including those starting today, Ash Wed., in hundreds of cities, worldwide– may not finish— because daily, Planned Parenthood clinics are closing, everywhere! Wonderful!
This is wonderful! Would love to see the National Garden of American Heroes– great to bring children to see it, too. It is concerning, because the Satanic Temple just announced they will hold a Black Mass at the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka, on March 28. Why on earth do Kansas lawmakers and their Governor allow such a vile hate group at their State Capitol? They say they will blaspheme and dishonor God, Christ, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, with their horrible anti-Catholic Black Mass. I think that hate groups like the Satanic Tenple and KKK should be outlawed and banned completely in America.
Can you ever write anything without using the words “Satan” or “Satanic”?
I despise the use of those words while also invoking the name of our creator.
The Satanic Temple steals consecrated Communion Hosts from Catholic churches for use in their horrific Black Masses. This is a terrible crime.
For Pete’s sake– Try to understand, that in this world, we have both Good and Evil, God and the Devil. From God comes all that is Good, from Satan comes all that is Evil. Through Evil and Satan come all destruction, disorder, disease, suffering and death. Through Chrust comes all that is Good from God– and Eternal Life with God in Heaven. Things like war, harm to others, murder, abortion, rape, robbery, human trafficking, clerical child sex abuse, pornorgraphy, child pornography, etc. are extremely evil and Satanic. The Bible teaches us to avoid sin and Satan, the Father of all lies, deceptions, sin, and evil– and seek God and His Goodness and all Christ-like virtues. Join Christ’s army of believers, fight sin and Satan. Read the Bible, and you will see the Truth. The Satanic Temple– is Satanic. The Satanic Temple worships Satan, and supports Abortion, and dispenses the mail-order Abortion drugs to kill unborn children.. The Satanic Temple claims Anortion— the murder of unborn children— to be their “sacrament.” A great evil in our society. We are called by Christ to be strong, not weak little imbecile, self-centered cowards– and to go fight Satan and Satanic evils in the world.– even to die for Christ, if we must.
What a speech by Trump! Democrats acted like the cockroaches they are, afraid of light being shone by Trump on all their malfeisance in mismanaging government to commit fraud and waste that benefits their cronies and pet causes. Government funded millions of dollars to turn mice into transgenders? Democrats should not be allowed to govern ever again, and everyone in his right mind will never vote for a Democrat. California needs to wake up to the Republican revolution happening all over the country. Change or be left behind.
Cockroaches: California Democrats are fast asleep and in the dead zone. If the recent California wildfires did not wake up the residents to the ruinous rule of Democrats, nothing ever will. I believe California is under judgement and to repent of it many sins and destructive policies of the ruling party and elites. California needs to be rebuilt and turn back to God. http://www.rebuildCalifornia.com.
Trump/Vance defunded Catholic Charities, CRS, and welched on outstanding payments to the USCCB but Planned Parenthood still has their govt money. How is this #prolife?
Different programs and allocations. Planned Parenthood is not funded through USAID. Give him time. He’s constrained by budget laws but does have some discretion about allocating funds assigned to specific programs.
I recommend Father Vincent Capodonna, (not sure of spelling-sorry!) Catholic priest hero in Vietnam, Died covering wounded soldier with his body during battle when he was killed by gunfire.. He was born on Staten Island NY,
Reply to Connie B.: Thank you for recommending Father Vincent Capodonna. His story is amazing. A true American hero.
Fr. Vincent Capodanno is surely a Saint– and an outstanding American hero! His Cause for Canonization was paused at the Vatican. A bunch of stupid Vatican politics is the reason for this. The Vatican did not like elevating a military chaplain to Sainthood, with the seriousness of wars in Ukraine, Israel, etc. today.
Fr. Kapaun , would also be a great addition .
Reply to Connie B.: Here is a short video Remembering Father Vincent Capodanno: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pgcXacm538
Democrats have been exposed by Trump and DOGE as the party of stealing taxpayer money.
Reply to Annon99: Yes Father Kapaun would be a great addition. Father Emil Kapaun was a priest and soldier who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. He is being considered for canonization as a saint by the Vatican. There’s even a documentary about the life of Father Kapaun as a Korean War hero and a military chaplain.
Reply to Restrainer: Further to my comment here is a Mini Documentary Father Kapuan comes home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eokrifa9UOs
It is nice that the new park area will contain statues of good heroes. That said …
We need to be careful about where we get our news these days. If you prefer Fox News most of the time, it is important to watch MSNBC from time to time. If you prefer to watch MSNBC most of the time, it is important to watch Fox News from time to time. Both are known for their extreme viewpoints. We also need to be cognizant of the use of AI to make false news seem real. Too many of us listen to and watch media with which we agree. Too many of us, myself included, favor news with which we agree. Fact-checking is a must. The government’s blundering is not the fault of just one party. Both are to blame because both have been in power for many years. They take turns messing it up. There is waste that should be wiped out. Let’s be sure that we don’t call programs fraud just because we don’t agree with them. Let’s also be sure that we know where the money goes. The billions “given” to Ukraine, for example, don’t go to Ukraine. It goes to American manufacturing companies that build the munitions and equipment that goes to Ukraine. A huge portion of the US Aid programs provided food grown by U.S. farmers. Now they don’t have a market for their crops. Article I of the Constitution says that Congress makes the laws. Article II says that the President executes the laws. That is the oath s/he takes. The President doesn’t have the right to make laws or for the most part spend money in ways different from how Congress appropriated it. Our democracy is on a slippery slope.
Reply to Bob One: I beg to differ. MSNBC is both a joke and a disgrace. At least Fox News has much more Democratic voices than MSNBC, CNN and the other media has Republican voices. The only reason I even watch CNN is to hear Scott Jenning’s opinions. The others all suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome. That’s why the left wing media is losing their audience share and they are firing their main voices.
I appreciate EWTN Catholic news shows– all of them. I listen to “EWTN News Nightly” each night. I enjoy Raymond Arroyo’s “World Over Live,” weekly. And I read different sources– always conservative, but with good Christian values, and balanced. One has to be careful with FOX news, but there are a few good sources there, at FOX. I appreciate news sources that are Christian and conservative, from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Rev. Franklin Graham, and his associates. They have been working with Pres. Trump for a long time. I also belong to AMAC (a conservative, Faith and Family Senior organization), California Family Council, CatholicVote, Family Research Council (in Washington, D..C.) and American Family Association. I get news daily, from all of these groups. Also, I appreciate news from LiveAction, 40 Days for Life, Susan B. Anthony Pro Life America, Students for Life of America, American Life League, the Catholic Thing, Catholic World Report, Catholic Herald, and various mothers’ online Pro Life, Faith and Family, conservative Catholic and Christian groups. I get unhappy with the liberal, Democrat TV “legacy news” sources, and just ignore them, turn down the sound, as I did last night, when a couple of legacy media newscasters came on TV after Pres. Trump’s speech, stupidly praising the Democrats who tried to nake noise and interrupt the President’s speech. UGH!!! I do not subscribe to cable TV– but can get limited access to what I need, with no cable hook-ups. I “cut the cord” a long time ago. I felt badly about the recent flare-up between Pres. Trump, Vance and Zelenskyy– they showed that entire thing, hundreds of times, it seemed– villfying Trump, of course– but I just turned down the sound, after seeing the incident one time– and prayed that it would turn out well, by God’s help. I think young Karoline Leavitt is doing a good job as the White House Press Secretary, and enjoy listening to her, too–but she is of course, biased, and has to be, on-the-job. She’s good, though. I have never liked the extreme right-wing, conservative groups, even religious ones– especially, the young right-wing extremists who are involved with that sort of thing, today. Some of them end up being so individualistic and “libertarian,” they are actually just like the liberal extremists– anti-society, even anti-Christian– and some are dangerous.
I daily subscribe to the Vatican website– and would so love to see clerical sex abuser, “Father” Marko “Rapenik’s” ugly, disgraceful artwork removed, by Easter! Or when we get the next pope. It hurts a lot. And is Marko “Rapenik” currently working as a priest? What horrible hypocrisy! Anyway, we are all praying the nightly Rosary, for the Pope, too, along with the Vatican.
I “cut the cord” a long time ago– no cable TV. Too much offensive filth, violence, immorality,, etc. I just get local stations, and a bunch of other things, too, free. I watch EWTN shows, and any other shows I choose, from my smartphone (Android) or tablet. I watch only live shows, or free shows– no paid shows. I use the EWTN app. I can also use other apps or Youtube, or whatever, and pick whatever I want. However– every time I find something to watch, live or pre-recorded– I get the option to transfer the show to my regular TV set— and it is all free! Nice to see on a larger screen– free! Very thrilled with that!
We have the greatest president in history!! I wish he would convert to the Catholic faith. I know he’s coming close and hopefully he will be guided by traditional Catholics and attend the TLM exclusively not the Novus Ordo disaster.!!
I wish Trump and Musk would show some honor to the vast majority of hard-working, loyal, patriotic Federal employees who are being subjected to their arbitrary slash-and-burn tactics. Many are former veterans and are *issed off at Trump, the man they voted for. It’s neither right nor moral.
