The Trump administration is closing a loophole in a policy that prohibits the federal government from funding groups that perform abortions as a form of family planning.
In 2017, President Donald Trump reinstated the Reagan Era “Mexico City Policy,”which bans the government from providing foreign aid to organizations that perform or promote abortions overseas.
At a press conference held Tuesday morning, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the administration was going to crack down on loopholes within the Mexico City Policy.
“We’re also making clear we will refuse to provide assistance to foreign NGOs that give financial support to other foreign groups in the global abortion industry,” said Pompeo.
“We will enforce a strict prohibition on backdoor funding schemes … American taxpayer dollars will not be used to underwrite abortions.”
Pompeo also announced that they will fully enforce a federal prohibition on using funds to lobby for or against abortion, commonly known as the Siljander Amendment.

So if a US NGO was getting $100,000 from the US Government, and gave $1,000 to a foreign charity which spent 5% of its revenue on abortion, the US NGO would loose all its $100,000 funding?. Seems draconian
And it should be draconian. NGOs mess around a bit too much in other countries’ cultures and affairs. I bear the shame of having worked with a U. S.government agency that was distributing IUDs in Chile in the 1960s.
Change the word “abortion” to “slavery” or “antisemitism” or “anti-Catholicism”. Would you still think it was draconian?
Thank God for President Trump. We might never have a president again that is as pro life as him.
To Mike, yes! That would be a strong message and a good incentive for the NGO to eliminate funding to any organization that supports abortion. (BTW: your strawman argument is very annoying).
Mike, are you planning to see Unplanned, which opens in 1000 theaters tomorrow? It might open your eyes to the evil of even one abortion.
We need to give credit where credit is due. President Trump, though my second-to-the-last choice for president, has been trying to keep his campaign promises and protect the unborn and their mothers from the violence of abortion. Additionally, he has been trying to defend religious liberty, appoint judges who respect the Constitution and fight the dangers of socialism (which has always been a disaster for human rights and liberty, including religious liberty). Thank God for him and the many commendable actions he has taken as president. And, let us continue to pray for him and all of us sinners.
