On May 13, 2016, CalCatholic posted an article headlined “San Francisco Catholic school nuns: we’re ok with trans teacher.” The post was a reprint of a celebratory May 12 article in the San Francisco Chronicle headlined “San Francisco Catholic school teacher comes out as transgender-and finds acceptance.” The article was a profile of a woman named Gabriela Stein-Bodenheimer, who “transitioned,” as such disfiguring surgery is now described, into “becoming a man.”

Both headlines described Mercy High School as a “Catholic school” but an online teacher review from an ostensible student gives a more detailed assessment: “They (Mercy High staff) are intentional about the way they teach women to believe in their power and potential. The bible is taught from a feminist/inclusive perspective and encourage students to think about what they believe and why. Mercy is LGBT friendly and does not enforce the new homophobic/transphobic doctrine for Catholic schools.”

Stein-Bodenheimer told the Chronicle, “It was very important to speak, and name myself, and not be silent,” but there is no indication that she has been silent in the past. In February, 2016, Stein-Bodenheimer attended the annual convention of the California Association of Teachers of English, held in Costa Mesa. According to the convention program, Stein-Bodenheimer gave a presentation on February 21. Her subject was “Capote loved Perry Smith: Teaching Queer Subtexts.”

Mercy High School also employs Hilda Guiao as a teacher of religion. Her LinkedIn page describes her role as “Teaching two sections of one-semester ethics classes to sophomores and three sections of Foundations of Religion classes to freshmen and transfer students.” Guiao, who like Stein-Bodenheimer, likes to wear a tie, was a signatory to a 2012 statement by Catholics for Equality, supporting Referendum 74. Referendum 74 gave voters a choice on whether to preserve natural marriage in the state of Washington, or allow what Pope Francis described when Argentina faced a similar vote in 2010 as “a ‘move’ of the father of lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.” At the time Guiao signed the Catholics for

Equality statement, she had finished a two-year stint serving as the Spiritual Enrichment for Young Adults Coordinator at the Ignatian Spirituality Center in Seattle. Both Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Military Service and Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., have said Catholics for Equality “cannot be legitimately recognized as Catholic.”

Mercy High employs Matthew Evearitt as director of educational technology.  On June 29, 2015, Evearitt posted a video of “Christians” from Oakland attending San Francisco’s 2015 Gay Pride parade, and  who, in Evearitt’s description of the video “…went and stood in love with those celebrating, and apologized for the hurt and damage done in the name of Christianity.” On his Facebook containing his video Evearitt wrote: “The movement surrounding affirmation of gay people in the church is growing and I’m glad to be part of a community that is a part of that…this is just a start.” The exercise is a part of what Pope Francis described in his January, 2015 speech in the Philippines as a “new ideological colonization that tries to destroy the family.”

As CalCatholic reported on April 14 of this year, the Mercy Center in Burlingame, run by the order, hosted pro-abortion and anti-marriage Congresswoman Jackie Speier. Speier has never received a less than 100 percent rating from the pro-abortionist group NARAL. Speier is featured front and center on the banner of the school’s Twitter page.
