As with other synods of this pontificate, the Synod on Synodality is being managed and run by personnel with distinct ideological backgrounds and similar perspectives, especially when it comes to sociopolitical issues and doctrine. Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the synod secretariat, called for the Church to be “more accepting of LGBT members” when he was bishop of Gozo, Malta. He was also the primary author of the Maltese bishops’ contentious guidelines on Amoris Laetitia that opened up admission to Holy Communion for civilly remarried divorcees if they were “at peace with God.” For Cardinal Grech, the DCS is part of a process of “growing increasingly into a synodal mindset” and shows the “People of God are converging in calling for a profound renewal of the Church.”
Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, the synod’s relator general, has caused controversy in recent months for saying same-sex-union blessings are “not a settled matter” and that Church teaching on homosexuality “is no longer correct” and can be changed. And in April, Xavière Sister Nathalie Becquart, undersecretary of the synod’s secretariat, gave an uncritical address to New Ways Ministry, which promotes “LGBT” rights in the Church, leading to strong criticism from Church leaders and prominent lay faithful.
Arguably most relevant to this stage in the synod is Jesuit Father Giacomo Costa, head of the synthesizing task force who worked with 26 experts to prepare the DCS for two weeks in Frascati, near Rome, over the summer. Last year, Father Costa caused indignation for saying Italian anti-homophobia legislation (called the “ddl Zan” bill) “was needed,” as the “priority is the defense of the person against all violence and against all discrimination.” Italian bishops and the Vatican opposed the bill, which, among its measures, would have mandated that Catholic schools and other institutions celebrate an annual anti-homophobia day. The legislation was later defeated in the Italian Senate.
Working under Father Costa’s guidance were 26 experts, most of them with similar heterodox visions for the Church. They included Msgr. Philippe Bordeyne, dean of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and the Family. In 2015, the theologian appeared to dissent from Humanae Vitae’s teaching on artificial contraception and last year approved of liturgical blessings for same-sex couples under certain conditions.
Another was Church polemicist Austen Ivereigh, who recounted his experience in Frascati in America magazine last month, saying he believed the document “harvested the fruits of the greatest-ever exercise in listening and consultation the Catholic Church has ever carried out.”
Ivereigh, who wrote The Great Reformer, an authoritative biography on Pope Francis, is well known for his progressive opinions and support for leftist politics, which he often shares on Twitter. A former deputy editor of the British liberal Catholic weekly The Tablet, he is now coordinator of the project “The Path to a Synodal Church” and a fellow in contemporary Church history at the Jesuit-run Campion Hall at the University of Oxford.
Mauricio López Oropeza is a native Mexican who played a significant role in the 2019 Amazon synod, serving as executive secretary of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM). The organization had a major role in running that synod and was chiefly responsible for the pachamama controversy. He says he was inspired by his early experiences and later working with the Jesuits, and like Ivereigh, he is an associate at Campion Hall.
Also among the experts are Jesuit Father Paul Béré from Burkina Faso, professor of Old Testament exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, who was awarded the Ratzinger Prize for his work on faith in the contemporary world and African theology; and Jesuit Father David McCallum, who, since 2020, has served as the founding executive director of the Program for Discerning Leadership in Rome.
Among the women experts are Medical Mission Sister Birgit Weiler, a German who worked with REPAM and participated as one of the experts in the Amazon synod. Sister Birgit has campaigned for a “stronger role for women in the Church,” specifically for a female diaconate and for women to vote in synods. (The Amazon synod was expected to pave the way for a permanent diaconate for women, as well as reconsider the notion that the exercise of Church governance must be linked in a permanent way to the priesthood, but it fell short of achieving those goals in Pope Francis’ post-synodal exhortation Querida Amazonia.)
Other experts are Christina Kheng, a planning consultant with the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific. Kheng has remarked that the “sensus fidei of the People of God” comes from listening to the word of God “and to the world around us so as to read the signs of the times.”
Congregation of Jesus Sister Gill Goulding is professor of dogmatic theology in the Jesuit faculty of theology at the University of Toronto. Sister Gill is an active member of “Church Action on Poverty,” an ecumenical organization working for the alleviation of poverty in the U.K.
Pope Benedict XVI appointed her in 2012 to be a theological expert at the Synod on the New Evangelization.
Sister Anne-Béatrice Faye is a member of the Association of African Theologians from Burkina Faso who, since 2021, has been an editorial board member of Concilium. The journal, founded after Vatican II by progressive theologians Yves Congar, Hans Kung, Karl Rahner and Edward Schillebeeckx, aims to “reinterpret and re-apply” the Council’s vision “to changing social and religious realities.” Former editors have included dissenting theologian Leonardo Boff and Church historian Alberto Melloni, a member of the Bologna School, which believes in a hermeneutic of rupture after Vatican II.
One bishop was among the experts: Bishop Timothy Costelloe, president of the Australian bishops’ conference.
During the 2018-2022 plenary council of the Church in Australia, he highlighted care for Indigenous people, the abuse crisis and the role of women in the Church. On the latter, he said “a lot of work” remains to be done.
According to the synod secretariat, all the experts were personally chosen or approved by Cardinals Grech and Hollerich, and most were selected from three commissions for the synod established in July 2021. Others, such as Ivereigh and Anna Rowlands, an associate professor of Catholic social thought and practice at the University of Durham, England, were chosen because of their skills in communication, but the secretariat stressed it did not endorse any of the experts’ personal views. Cardinal Grech told the Register Nov. 18 the experts’ names were published to be as transparent as possible, and no “formal accusations” have been made regarding their choice….
The above comes from a Nov. 22 article in the National Catholic Register.
A liberal Catholic called this article “glop” and “slanderous poison”. Fr. James Martin agreed and asserted that it’s clear the Holy Spirit is managing the synod, which frightens some people.

Fr. Martin also blamed conservative Christians for the attack in a gay club, but now we know that the shooter was himself gay/bisexual. So much for that.
It is the liberals and dissenters who are poisoning our Church and our country.
The best possible thing to happen to stop this would be for the see of Rome to become vacant so that this destructive synod gets halted. Then the next pope cancels it. How about some divine intervention, Holy Spirit?
Sorry, but calling for the death of the Pope, any Pope, or any other person is contrary to the Catholic faith. Let’s stop with the hate. God is Love.
Um, who says he’s calling for the death of the pope? Francis could resign, like Benedict resigned. I see merely a neutral proposal that if Pope Francis were no longer to be pope, then the synod could not continue as planned. God is love, and God works in mysterious ways.
Wrong Bob One God is Justice and may it visit us very soon
The “see of Rome” did become vacant right smack dab in the middle of Vatican II, much to the delight of many conservatives at the time hoping that would put an end to it. However, just as nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, so nothing can separate us from the work of the Holy Spirit, made manifest by the gathering of bishops from around the world.
If I read the article correctly, it is obliquely saying that the synod has pre-determined ends which have little to do with the Holy Spirit, but much to do with the LGBT spirit of the times. I leave it to others to decide if I understand the article, and if the article accurately describes the situation.
If you clicked on the link and read the whole article, I think it is meant to stir up those who do not understand the synod and who are afraid that it is all about a LGBT hostile takeover of the Church.
It is written by Edward Pentin, who if you do not know who he is, you take his writings with a grain of salt. They are his opinions and often serve to undermine confidence in the Church.
Better to read the Bible which is written by those inspired by the Lord.
Ask yourself-so what? So what if what I am afraid of comes true?
You can’t leave the Church because then you will go to hell. You can’t join with heretics or schismatics because then you will go hell. There is only one God and one Church.
As a Rome correspondent for 15 years, Edward Pentin is an expert on the papacy and on the Holy See. He began his career in Rome as a producer and presenter at Vatican Radio. He is one of just a handful of English-speaking correspondents who have covered the Vatican for English-language media for well over a decade. He now works as a full-time Rome correspondent for the “National Catholic Register,” and is a regular contributor to EWTN programs. He has also written several prominent books on subjects related to the Vatican and papacy. Edward Pentin is an outstanding Catholic journalist, one whom we can rely on, for the truth.
That’s his bio.
Oh YFC your criminal syndicate is so close to getting what it wants.. sodomy as the new sacrament, this will thankfully lead to a schism there is no place for the lies homosexuals in the Church of Christ… God is wrath.
We can always depend on Divine intervention in human affairs. This is God’s creation, not ours. But it is always better for human beings to face reality, discipline themselves– and courageously tackle their problems, long before things become so bad, that a major breakdown occurs– and horrific consequences follow. For example– promiscuous gays who finally get AIDs — and die, along with all the men and boys they slept with and infected. Gay sex acts are filthy, unnatural perversions, mortal sins against God and His creation. You cannot live a lie, dishonest to yourself and to God. All mortal sin brings Death. The Holy Spirit knows what is best for the Pope and Vatican. The consequences will always be horrific sufferings for those who lie, cheat, and grievously sin.
Our Loving Creator wants to spare us from pain and suffering, which are consequences of sin. He tries to teach us and guide us to go in the right ways, and lead a good life, close to Him. We must listen to Him and follow, with good discipline, as He guides us– even if it is very hard at times. We must try very hard to surrender to His Divine Will– He will help us do so. And then, all will be well.
When some people create Frankenstein monsters, they should not be surprised at all when their creations turn on them.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (St. Matthew 5:8) St. Paul tells us that our bodies are members of Christ Himself, and one must not take members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute– nor commit any sexual sins. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. St. Paul says, “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man commits is outside the body, but he who commits sexual sin, sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, Whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” (1Cor. 6:18-20) A Christian cannot enter Heaven, and be united with Our Lord, unless he or she is pure.
I was ordained in 1992. At one of my large parishes we baptized over 450 people, first communion to over 650, 80 weddings each year, 250 confirmations, a thriving RCIA, door to door evangelization, 1500 children in catechesis, theology of the body for chastity for our youth. Catholics were busting down our doors to get the gospel out. Non Catholics were busting down our doors to get into the Catholic Church. Now people are drifting toward protestantism because it is evangelizing while Catholic leaders are being a megaphone for unbridled sexual expression totally contrary to the gospel, and for every other worldly whim rather than to lead the world to Christ. Pope Francis has been ambiguous about evangelizing Jews, Muslims, and conflating evangelization with proselytizing. The synod is stealing time from evangelization so that the church be changed into a megaphone for the world rather than the herald for Jesus who offers repentance, forgiveness, and eternal life. Come, Lord Jesus!
I blame the gays. The gays want to change the church’s doctrine or pastoral application to approve of gay sex and gay unions. Gay priests, gay bishops and gay laity have infiltrated the church, and that is their aim. Just look at what priests like Fr. James Martin and Fr. Dan Horan and Fr. Brian Massingale are doing here in the U.S. They have mounted a gay blitzkrieg in the church.
No one should minimize or trivialize the serious nature of the terribly destructive heresy, apostasy, of many top Church leaders, of today. Something needs to be done, to correct the situation. On Thursday, the Pope (who turns age 86 in a few weeks) warned the International Theological Commission, which advises the Congregation (now, the Dicastery) for the Doctrine of the Faith, to “not go backwards with Tradition,” but instead, to “seek advice on promoting the Gospel from non-Catholic experts.”
I think some serious action needs to be taken. The Dubia of the four Cardinals did not work. Something needs to be done. Wonder what faithful, orthodox Catholic clerical leaders could do??
It is not just practicing homosexuals, it is also those who are living in adulterous heterosexual relationships — sinners confirming each other in sin, instead of encouraging each other in clean living.
Perhaps, rather than actually reading and listening to Pope Francis you are listening to his critics?
I think if you read his homilies, his meditations, his general audiences and his encyclicals etc, you will develop a different view and see why the Holy Spirit chose him to begin to put into motion the vision of St. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.
Pope Francis is all about evangelizing and also the Synod was supposed to be, but there was a lack of understanding plus an outright effort to thwart it by those who have been groomed by certain Internet personalities.
The lavender mafia is again in ascendency. The Church is suffering from a severe case of synoditis.
Synods would not be bad, in fact, would be good, if those participating, clergy and lay, were faithful to Christ and His teachings, not dissenters.
As Saint Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, warned, from among bishops and priests will come savage wolves who will devour the flock.(Acts 20:27-30)
Put not your trust in princes and sons of men, in whom there is no salvation. (Psalm 146:3)
Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the Head of the Church. (Hebrews 12:2)
And so many Catholics are distracted by the wolves when all they have to do is follow the Shepherd
I just read on the Vatican website, that the Vatican has published a statement warning against the Synod on Synodality, and its evils. They actually said that it is not a Synod at all. They said that the Vatican has been daily flooded with mail, complaining of the evils of the Synod on Synodality, and other related, terrible problems of today’s Church.
Please give a link to that.
