California police were on the hunt for a man accused of burglarizing a Catholic Church near Palm Springs on Monday, taking with him a $1,600 wooden cross.
The unidentified man was captured on video the approaching the St. Louis Catholic Church early Monday morning and then leaving with a wooden cross of Jesus Christ under his arm, the Cathedral City Police Department told KESQ.
Reverend Luis A. Guido told the station that the Cristo Negro, a replica of the “Black Christ of Esquipulas” made in Guatemala, was never secured properly because he never imagined that someone would take it.
“We never expected someone would want to steal Christ so we just had a small lock, a baby lock. Probably just needed pliers or a screwdriver and we found the lock on the floor, the door open and this empty,” he said.
Guido said he hoped that whoever took the $1,600 crucifix would return it since it’s a special symbol for the church’s Central American parishioners.
Police said the church was vandalized as well. The investigation was ongoing.

Not being a carpenter, I would think a few extra bolts or screws would make the theft more difficult. Given they had a video system, why not also a basic alarm system?
Our parish has been vandalized as well. A Statue of St. Francis was stolen a few years ago. This is what happens when secular society says “There really is no right or wrong, only how you FEEL!” So now we have security guards and nothing that isn’t bolted down or too heavy to carry. We also have video cameras.
I am out in the desert today and may stop by the Church to take a look there in Cathedral City.
It seems incredibly gullible and naïve to not safeguard valuable things today. Who doesn’t realize there are people out there who would steal your shoelaces off your feet if they could? Put things UP where they cannot be reached by destructive or thieving hands.
As for the robber, I would not be surprised should things take a decidedly negative turn. Imagine stealing a figure of Christ and expecting what, good luck and fortune? I don’t think so…
Friends in Palm Springs, Banning and Beaumont, be on the lookout for a man walking around town carrying a large cross with a black Jesus as the corpus. Should be fairly easy to spot. Call the police if you see this guy.
