The following comes from an Aug. 12 story by Anne Hendershott in Crisis magazine.
More than four decades ago, Pope Paul VI predicted in Humanae Vitae that the emergence of the new reproductive technologies—especially the birth control pill—would lead to a “lowering of moral standards … and a rise in infidelity.” Today, with the emergence of Truvada, a pill that has been shown in clinical trials to be up to 99 percent effective in preventing the spread of AIDS through sexual activity, some in the gay community are beginning to echo these same kinds of concerns.
In a July, 2014 cover story in New York Magazine, writer Tim Murphy captures the paradox such a pill presents to the gay community in possibly changing what he calls “a mind-set of sexual prudence that has governed gay-male life since the early ’80s.” Pointing to the proliferation of T-shirts and Instagram captions reading “Truvada Whore,” Murphy presents both sides of this issue—pointing to the benefits of a pill that will surely save lives, but at the same time encourage the self-destructive promiscuity of the past. Interviews published in Murphy’s article reveal the fears held by many who have spent their lives working to end the scourge of AIDS that “reverting to pre-condom habits might be tempting fate again.” In a conversation with Dr. Martin Markowitz, a veteran of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, the AIDS researcher warned: “Mother Nature’s a bitch. Don’t underestimate her.”
Playwright Larry Kramer, a long-time leader in the gay community who has been HIV positive since the 1980s, has been especially critical of Truvada. He is particularly concerned about the health risks of the drug. Originally designed ten years ago as an HIV-treatment pill, Truvada “quietly became the first drug to be approved by the FDA for a new use: to prevent HIV infection.” Renamed PrEP (short for “pre-exposure prophylaxis), the drug has been welcomed—even celebrated—by many. But, in an interview published in the New York Times, Kramer said: “Anybody who voluntarily takes an antiviral every day has got to have rocks in their heads. There’s something cowardly about taking Truvada instead of using a condom. You’re taking a drug that is poison to you.”
Likewise, Sean Strub, the HIV positive founder of Poz, a magazine published for those “affected by HIV and AIDS,” was quoted in the New York Magazine article as saying that “Rather than giving HIV negative people the life skills teaching them how to be healthy about their sexuality … the idea is unbelievable that we are going to put tens of millions of gay men on PrEP and bankrupt the economy to spray people with Raid.” Murphy points out that Truvada has been linked to kidney damage “in a small percentage of those who take it as part of their HIV treatment regimen.”
Indeed, these are many of the same kinds of concerns that Pope Paul warned of in 1968 when he said that the widespread use of the birth control pill would diminish the relationship between men and women. The pontiff also pointed to the possibility that governments would coerce the use of such technology to control population growth. Mary Eberstadt’s 2012 book, Adam and Eve After the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution documents these costs including the degradation of women through what she calls the “consumerization of love,” as well as the proliferation of pornography, cohabitation, and the emergence of the “hook-up culture” on college campuses and beyond.
At the same time, just as Pope Paul predicted, governments and private foundations like the Gates Foundation, have promoted all forms of birth control on a global scale—sometimes through coercive means. In the United States, we continue to be embroiled in the controversy over the Obama administration’s requiring all institutions—including Catholic ones—to provide insurance coverage for contraception, labeling it as a type of “preventive care.” Murphy’s New York Magazine piece predicts that similar kinds of government mandate controversies may emerge around coverage for Truvada as a form of preventative care:
Most insurers—both private and public, such as Medicaid—have covered the cost of Truvada-forPrEP (as they generally do once drugs are FDA approved for specific uses) and the potential controversial issue has flown under the public radar. Some bloggers have wondered if the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling which says that private employers can block contraceptive coverage for workers on the grounds of religious belief, might lead some bosses to block Truvada reimbursement on their plans.
In an attempt to address the dramatic increases in AIDS rates within the gay population in his state, Murphy writes that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo vows to make the drug even more widely available and will begin a public-information campaign for PrEP in an effort to “eradicate the AIDS epidemic in the state by 2020.” While the drug is for both men and women, the reality is that the highest HIV rates continue to be among young gay men. Murphy points out that in 2010, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 20 percent of U.S. gay men had HIV compared with about .3 percent (not 3 percent) of the total population. In 2012, the CDC reported that HIV rates in gay men between ages 13 and 24 rose 22 percent in recent years. “[I]f HIV infections continue at current rates, half of all young gay men will have HIV by age 50.”
Coverage is already expensive for insurers—which likely pass the expense on to consumers. Taxpayers are already paying for coverage for the preventative drug for gay men through Medicaid—but the drug will save the lives of young men who engage in high-risk same sex behavior so most are grateful for that. Murphy credits Gilead, the drug-maker for Truvada, as showing “surprising restraint, given the potential size of the new market.” In interviews with Murphy, a spokesperson from Gilead said that, Truvada is “an important public-health intervention and not a commercial opportunity.” He points out that the company has a program to make the drug available to eligible patients with no health insurance or with unaffordable co-pays. But, Murphy also points out that “some HIV activists feel that Gilead is quietly funding a surge in HIV negative takers of Truvada—whose list price is about $1,300 a month—while not having to take flak from PrEP opponents for implicitly promoting condom-less sex.”
In Veritatis Splendor, the 1995 encyclical on truth and morality, Pope John Paul II reminds us that, “The negative precepts of the natural law are universally valid. They oblige each and every individual, always and in every circumstance.” We cannot help but be reminded of these words when we read the statements from gay men and AIDS researchers in Murphy’s courageous essay in New York Magazine. AIDS researcher Dr. Martin Markowitz is simply echoing a coarsened re-construction of this papal encyclical when he pronounces, “Mother Nature is a bitch.” Faithful Catholics—and all students of natural law—have known this forever….

Viruses, like bacteria, mutate. Some percentage of HIV viral particles will not be neutralized/destroyed by Truvada, so that those continuing to engage in risky behaviors will eventually incubate a Truvada-resistant virus. What then? Said Chesterton: “In the matter of sex, a man does not even approach sanity until he approaches sanctity.” In the matter of AIDS, the promiscuous are insane.
Not surprised to see a government that is hell bent on butchering babies spend precious time and money approving drugs to facilitate sodomy. Abortion and sodomy. My, has America fallen.

Articles: Homophobia: Psychopolitical Enmification of Christians as Mentally Diseased
Wikipedia’s entry entitled “homophobia” makes the concept seem the greatest boon to humanity since the invention of the wheel.
It articulates the totalitarian fallacy by … transferring it to the category of “objective enmity,” presenting it as a mental disease.
– classifications of the homophobias clearly indicate the view that believing the teachings of the Bible on the subject of homosexual behavior is a mental disorder.
It reports that the term was coined by a psychologist, George Weinberg, as a blend of the words homosexual and phobia – “fear or morbid fear.” The article states Weinberg’s term “describes the concept of a medical phobia.”
In the Godless, jealous heart of modernity, there coalesces a hatred against the group that is unconsciously seen as morally brilliant and, indeed, blessed with the benefits of a superior moral consciousness. For the Nazi that was the Jew, for the dullard Communist the intellectual and artist.
Now for Western progressivism, the “folks” who educated and merchandised Barack Obama, the enemy is the Christian.

Totalitarianism depends on indoctrinating foot soldiers to believe unreasoning, at times idiotic credos, rationalizing what is little more than bitter jealousy against more natural, harmless, gifted, civilized, and spiritually advanced modes of life.

Wow!
Michael, thank you for posting that American Thinker article written by Deborah C. Tyler. To use Dana’s words WOW indeed! I clicked on her name and noticed that she has written several dozen articles, many with interesting titles. I will have to make time to read more of what she has written.
Actually, it does not matter whether or not there is a truvada pill or not; homosexual sex is always mortally sinful, and no accommodation should ever be made for its occurrence. Society has limited resources, which should not be squandered by pandering to demonic sexual activity. The notion of advocating “sexual prudence” is beyond ridiculous, kind of like saying that you will only commit a mortal sin on Sunday, maintaining virtue for the rest of the week. Of course, Cardinal Dolan and the rest of the truly demented clerical leadership in the Church will praise any such discovery, because they are not men of Faith (or not really Men, at all). Just junk the pills, boys, and go at it — your choice to do so is a mortal sin, whether or not you act dainty in its acquisition. Enjoy!!
I predict Truveda will not be used widely as prophylaxis for HIV. Reasons: It’s very expensive, it’s long term affects are understudied, it will not prevent mutant strains from taking hold, and mostly because its effectiveness drops in the real world to much much lower because it has to be taken every day and most people don’t or won’t.
Instead of Truvada, sodomites should be taking a dose of this:

How will lies help anyone?
Well, they certainly help the angels of hell recruit souls to sodomite sin and eternal fire, right?
Right . . . hence my question; why do you keep posting lies?
Hence my answer. The lies of Satan and his sodomite minions “help” recruit souls to sodomy and hell. (Jude 1:7)
peter, I can’t help but think, that given your present state, you wouldn’t be able to see the truth, feel the truth, hear the truth, taste the truth, nor speak the truth, even if you wanted to. Run to our Blessed Mother! Immerse yourself in the Sacred Wounds of Jesus! You will find freedom there!
ABSTINENCE – – – ABSTINENCE – – – ABSTINENCE.
Regarding STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases) – – –
” Abstinence: The most reliable way to avoid infection is to not have sex (i.e., anal, vaginal or oral). ” – Center for Disease Control web site.
Those who commit the MORTAL SINS of
ADULTERY, HOMOSEXUAL PRACTICES, and FORNICATION are at serious risk.
STD’s are on the rise at an alarming rate. Many STDs can have life threatening and/or life long consequences.
There are more than 20 MILLION NEW – STD cases annually in the USA alone. Why is this not taught fully in our public Jr and Sr High Schools?
What are our Bishops and their Priests doing to educate Catholics about these Mortal Sins and potential temporal consequences as well as eternal consequences, or are they too busy with illegal immigrants ?
What are the PARENTS doing to educate their own children about premarital sex, adultery and the consequences of hedonistic behavior, drinking, taking drugs et al? Who did God place in charge of raising and nurturing our children? The Bishops? It wouldn’t be a bad idea for judges to start holding parents accountable when their children are jailed for drinking and driving etc. Maybe they’d start putting a little more effort in maintaining discipline and taking their children to church if they had to be sent to parenting classes or paying big fines.
Excellent point, Dana. The negation of parental responsibility has led to a tremendous mess.
Parents are responsible to educate their children.
Bishops and their Priests are responsible to educate the Parents (and other Laity).
Its all in the CCC.
The dangers of STDs ARE taught in our public schools, but conservative folks hate any kind of sex ed in schools. Some of them post here on CCD.
YFC do you support schools handing out birth control to those precious children?
Sex education has been a failure. STD’s are rampant precisely because of this failure and the liberal’s assault on decency.
STDs and ABSTENANCE are not adequately taught in public schools, at appropriate grade levels 9 -12.
People do and should object to explicit porn pictures etc., being used.
I fully approve of HEALTH classes, where students learn about nutrition, dental care etc. If you’d seen what I’ve seen in my teaching days you’d be appalled at what teens eat before school (usually nothing!) and many don’t know basic grooming or the importance of proper diet and exercise. This sort of milieu is perfect for teaching about STD’s , abstinence, etc. so that the emphasis is on a holistic approach to the body…not just sex. Believe me, most kids know more than their teachers about std’s, etc. from personal knowledge gained from their siblings, etc. Sex ed is one of the least of their problems….if you only knew!! Many are working late nights or parents throw them out or they’ve nothing to wear. And then they have to sit through some idiotic sex ed class like that’s all they’ve got to worry about. The people so obsessed with sex become so because they have the luxury and self-absorbtion to do so. Not everyone comes from a plushy background. When I taught on the Rez, they wanted to learn about old movies, music, and the joys we take for granted…once they understood what our culture could really be llke, they were starved to learn more.
As is the case with the Pill, those taking Truveda have some solid moral foundation to do so due to health; others may use it as a means of continuing an indiscriminant sex life. Most women taking the Pill do so for licit reasons, but some to engage in an active recreational sex life. We should at least support those taking these medications for licit and praiseworthy reasons.
Very FEW women take the pill for true health reasons – hormonal imbalance etc.
MOST take it to prevent pregnancies – the Mortal Sin called Contraception – because they are too lazy to practice NFP if they are married.
There should be no sexual acts for the unmarried.
Adultery, Fornication, Homosexual Acts are Mortal Sins. These are not licit under God’s law.
What? What? Is there any logic at all in what you say, “Anonymous”? There are no moral grounds of any kind in taking Truveda (and your comments regarding the morality of taking the pill does not represent Catholic thinking, although it may well represent the feminized Catholic clergy today, in what they say to women contemplating this). No homosexual sex, period, at least not in a Catholic morality way. The drug encourages a false sense of security, and a welcoming sense of continuing a morally illicit sexaul activity. Homosexual sex is always wrong, always. Questions of “morality” regarding this drug, or using a condom are simply dopey, Nothing makes homosexual sex moral, or less immoral. Just say “No”.
St. Christopher, I opined earlier that I don’t think this pill will see widespread use in the gay community. There is an important usage for Truveda that sensationalism displayed by the title of this article hides: More straight people are infected with HIV than gay people worldwide. The Church has struggled with the use of condoms for straight couples where one spouse is infected. For the first time, Truveda allows normal marital conjugation in serodiscordant couples without putting the negative spouse at risk. Please don’t forget that in these circumstances, and in complete contrast to the birth control pill, the use of Truveda would be completely consistent with Church teaching.
Licit and praiseworthy reasons.
The dogma of the Church says that all sexual activity must be open to the possibility of conception. How can one get licit and praiseworthy in between those words?
Fr. Bill,
Of course what you say here and I presume what you teach wherever you are is absolutely correct, but unfortunately for those who advocate such a morally corrupt lifestyle absolute correctness as is taught by the Church is not something they want to hear. When they finally do here it, it will be from their Judge, Our Lord and His Mother, and then it will be too late!
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika!
Viva Cristo Rey!

The problems with STDs and teenage pregnancies have been around for more than forty years. For all these years we were told that the solution to the problem is more sex education. That is what was implemented all throughout the country. They would always come back after a couple of years and start talking about how we have this crisis of STDs and teenage pregnancies and the only way we can solve it is to have more sex education. Decade after decade has passed and they still are singing the same tune. So now we have kids who are falling behind in math and science and are being taught about birth control pills, condoms, sex toys, sodomy, whipping and bondage. So what is the public school system training them for? How about a career in pornography or prostitution? And how is a condom gonna help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases with couples that whip and bite and claw each other? If more sex education is the solution to solving the problem, then how come it hasn’t worked yet. The people in charge of the public education system seemed to be obsessed with sex education. I wonder how many of them are molesters. Perhaps the teachers and administrators should be throughly screened to see if they have a criminal record for molesting children.
Oh, good grief. What will people think of next to avoid the only answer to it all — self control with the help and grace of God. Lord give us all self control and teach us abstinence when it is improper and sinful to engage in certain behavior, so we do not kill ourselves and others through overindulgence of any kind.
