The following comes from a December 4 LifeSiteNews story.
The U.S. Senate has voted down a treaty that opponents warned could widen acceptance of abortion, deny the parents of special needs children their rights, and compromise U.S. sovereignty.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) failed to be ratified after a 61-38 vote.
“Today’s vote was a victory for human rights and for American sovereignty,” said Austin Ruse, president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, an organization that testified against the treaty.
Article 25 of the CRPD called on nations to furnish the disabled “free or affordable health care…including in the area of sexual and reproductive health and population-based public health programmes.” Pro-life leaders warned that language could be interpreted to include abortion, as it has in the case of other UN treaties.
“The irony of including abortion in this treaty is that abortion especially targets the disabled in the womb,” Josh Craddock, international representative for Personhood USA, said in a statement e-mailed to LifeSiteNews.com. “Persons with disabilities should not be exposed to violence and discrimination, either before or after birth.”
President Obama signed the treaty more than three years ago, but it needed two-thirds approval by the Senate for acceptance.
The vote, which took place just after noon, split mostly along party lines. Republicans John McCain, Kelly Ayotte, John Barrasso, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Lisa Murkowski, Scott Brown, and Richard Lugar sided with the Democrats.
“Trying to turn this into an abortion debate is bad politics and just wrong,” Sen. McCain said. The 2008 Republican presidential nominee has warned Republicans to “leave the [abortion] issue alone” in recent media appearances….
“Now, that CRPD is defeated, we know that United Nations won’t have oversight of how we care for our special needs kids,” said former Senator Rick Santorum, the father of a special needs daughter. “This treaty would have given the UN oversight of the healthcare and education choices parents with special needs kids make.”
Santorum, Senator Mike Lee, and homeschooling leader Mike Farris held a press conference last Monday inside the Senate to oppose the treaty.

John McCain calls everyone, “MY FRIEND”, except the unborn.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow, and thank you to Senators Santorum, Lee and Ferris and all the others who voted against this despicable piece of legislation.. We know who the traitors to life in the Republican Party are too now. McCain would have been no better than Obama from the way this looks. Turning our sovereignty over to the United nations in any way, especially on the issues of life, is just unthinkable.
“McCain would have been no better than Obama from the way this looks.”
Good to remember for the next time the Republican party and their associated posters attempt to frame a vote for them as the only alternative to damnation.
McCain might not have been any better, but the platform of the Republican Party and the pro lifers in the Party would have kept “his feet to the fire”. No one would have been able to do that in the Democratic Party as it has gone, for the most part, totally pro death, pushing abortion, euthanasia and so-called same-sex marriage as it offers bribes (goodies) for its to treasons to God and country.
make that “for it treason to God and country”.
The Democratic Party of Death and a few RINOs will not change.
So when are the Diocese Bishops going to formally excommunciate (ab homine) ‘Catholic’ politicians who consistently vote against Church teachings on the non-negotiables – Abortion, Euthanasia, Homo-sexual Marriage, and against Freedom of Religion ?
It’s really a shame we have to start letter writing campaigns to get some Bishops to do their jobs.
I guess their too busy being disappointed about the death penalty for guilty and unjust aggressors. They should have stated they were disappointed that the ‘Party of Death’ maintained control of the Presidency and the Senate.
We must never lose the 2/3rd’s Rule…….those who say it clogs expedency–well good!
What is wrong with Obama? How evil can one person be? Is he not concerned for his soul?
Yes, thank God the vote failed, but, because it is a vote it can come up again. It can show up in some other legislation. Does the Congress allow more than one item in a piece of legislation ? This vote should not preclude vigilance on everyone’s part. Thanks CFHRI for your vigilance.
“A few RINOs” – that’s a hoot!
The advocates for this treaty included former Republican President and Vice President George HW Bush, ’96 Republican party Presidental Candidate, ’76 Republican party Vice-Presidential candidate, and long-time Republican Senate minority leader Robert Dole, former Republican President George W. Bush, and ’08 Republican Presidential candidate John McCain. Note that with the exception of Dick Cheney it includes every living member of every presidential campaign between Nixon’s and Romney’s.
In short, it includes all the movers and shakers of the Republican party. The RINOs? That can apply only to followers, not to the guys in charge. You figure out who earns the “name only” and from whom, MAC.
Just when we think all is lost, and we are going to despair, a small miracle occurs which reminds us mortals that GOD IS IN CHARGE! We must never loose hope, but trust in God’s magnificent providence. He will never abandon us, so let us never cease to call upon Him with our humble prayers.
Our Founding Fathers told us that “the price of Freedom is eternal vigilance” THEY only needed 5 more votes to succeed in their evil deeds!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
We used to thank God for majority rule. But then the sodomites and abortionists became the majority.
Now, we thank God for two thirds rule. But the sodomites and abortionists will soon be the two-thirds.
Who are we going to thank then? The USCCB, for fiddling while Rome burned?
I am going to pray the Pro life Patriot Rosary from now on. This country is in desperate need of it. I recommend all American pro lifers do so too. The men, and if any women, who voted this legislation now are true patriots in my eyes.
Juergensen, those who practice sodomy are during a pretty good job of destroying themselves. As Fr. Corapi used to say (we need too pray for him too) their arms are too short to box with God. He certainly was right about that.
