The following is from the Diocese of San Diego website:
Statement by Bishop McElroy on “testimony” by former Papal Nuncio:
“This is a moment when the bishops of our nation, in union with the Holy Father, should be focused solely on comprehensively revealing the truth about the patterns of the sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults by clergy in our Church, so that deep reform can be enacted.
“Unfortunately, in recent weeks ideological warriors within the Church on both sides of the spectrum have utilized the tragedy of victims of abuse to promote their goals. The dedication to comprehensive truth has been subordinated to selective targeting of enemies and tendentious distortions of the truth.
“Archbishop Vigano’s statement constitutes just such a distortion. It is not an attempt to comprehensively convey the truth. In its ideologically-driven selection of bishops who are attacked, in its clear efforts to settle old personal scores, in its omission of any reference to Archbishop Vigano’s own massive personal participation in the covering up of sexual abuse by bishops, and most profoundly in its hatred for Pope Francis and all that he has taught, Archbishop Viganò consistently subordinates the pursuit of comprehensive truth to partisanship, division and distortion.
“We as bishops cannot allow the pathway of partisanship to divide us or to divert us from the searing mission that Christ calls us to at this moment. We must make public our sinful past. We must engage and help heal the survivors of abuse. We must develop new, lay-governed instruments of oversight and investigation in every element of how we confront sexual abuse by clergy at all levels in the life of the Church. And we must reject all attempts to subordinate these goals to ideological or personal projects. For if we do not, we will have betrayed the victims of abuse once again.”
+Bp. McElroy
From Diocese of San Diego website.
“The Pope knows we have a bigger agenda. He’s got to get on with other things, of talking about the environment and protecting migrants and carrying on the work of the church. We’re not going to go down a rabbit hole on this.” —Cardinal Cupich
Cupich and McElroy are part of the problem. Hirelings and not shepherds. They need to resign along with Pope Francis
“Archbishop Vigano’s statement constitutes just such a distortion.”
Quite possibly…
“In its ideologically-driven selection of bishops who are attacked, in its clear efforts to settle old personal scores, in its omission of any reference to Archbishop Vigano’s own massive personal participation in the covering up of sexual abuse by bishops, and most profoundly in its hatred for Pope Francis and all that he has taught, Archbishop Viganò consistently subordinates the pursuit of comprehensive truth to partisanship, division and distortion.”
Maybe so…
One question though….Is Vigano’s statement true or not?
How about significant overt lay involvement in selection of Bishops, Cardinals and even the Pope. Sunlight is the best cleanser.
Remember who gives the money to pay the bills.
Mike .. a few years ago I would have said your suggestion was too radical. Now however, unless we think outside the box, the Church, at least in America will be marginalized to obscurity.
This old boy will stop at nothing to save his skin!
Wow! He’s getting desperate to launch accusations like that.
Bishop McElroy, could you please cite specifics to justify your claims?
By Fr. Carlos Martins:
“I just spent the last two hours on the phone with a friend in the Vatican Curia. He said that the news of Archbishop Viganò has hit the Curia like an atomic bomb. Two things are universally noted regarding Viganò: 1) He is highly respected as a professional, and 2) His Curial positions gave him clear access to the damning information he reported. In other words, he is not a hack, and he is not relying on rumor. This makes his report absolutely worthy of belief.”
Can the same be said of you Bishop McElroy?
I notice which bishops only want to address the clerical abuse of children and who don’t include the charges of sexual abuse and harassment of seminarians and other legal adults.
Bishop McElroy’s statements ring eerily familiar. In the seminary, it’s well known that a typical trick of the lavender mafia is to counter-accuse any seminarian who makes a complaint against a seminarian who seeks a gay tryst. Since Archbishop Vigano’s letter holds considerable weight and since Bishop McElroy’s letter accuses with broad strokes, I suspect that the same dynamic is in play.
I wonder if anyone ever made a complaint against Bishop McElroy when he was in the seminary. And if there was, how did he respond? I’d be very interested to see that file.
A disgusting sycophant; not a real bishop at all. As stories circulate about how then-Cardinal “Uncle Ted” McCarrick and the rest of the Sodomite Bunch sought to populate America’s bishops with friendly faces, a self-respecting cleric would have resigned rather than write such dribble. Painful, isn’t it, Bishop, when they punch your meal ticket. You aren’t really worth much anyway, given your whiny writing, and sloppy exhortations to support the morally insupportable.
You and your vile pals need to go, along with the Pope.
Yet he doesn’t challenge any of Vigano’s specific charges. Just like Cupich didn’t. Just like the Pope didn’t. None of them have said the charges are false. They make ad hominem attacks against Vigano. They won’t discuss his specific allegations. They are cooked, and they know it.
This is a non-statement statement. Obfuscation. Distraction. Misdirection. It’s not going to work, McElroy. We now know you are part of a corrupt network of gay-friendly, gay-enabling bishops that includes the pope whose aim is to promote and protect each other with the intent to change the church’s doctrines.
Not going to work.
Easy formula: pro-gay bishop or priest = not a faithful Catholic bishop or priest. Or pope, as Vigano has pointed out. McElroy is pro-gay, therefore not faithful. No wonder he’s so angry at Vigano. Vigano has exposed the gay bishop club. McElroy should never have been made bishop. Nor Cupich. Nor Tobin. Especially not being made cardinals. So many frauds in the church hierarchy.
Bishop McElroy would discredit Viganno’s outing of tawdriness of bishop selection and subsequent abuse cover-up, because the Archbishop did not reveal his “own massive personal participation in the cover-up of sexual abuse by bishops”. A very serious charge but without “specifications”, as the military say. Either McElroy is talking through his hat or he has facts to back up his charge—namely, the names of bishops Vigano covered up for. In the first case, he should apologize and hang his head in shame. But if he can truthfully name names, LET HIM NAME THEM ALL in the interest “of the pursuit of comprehensive truth” which, he claims is his sole motive.
A more cynical view would suggest he sees the Archdiocese of Washington…
slipping further and further from his grasp.
Methinks he doth protest too much:
Encrypted message, 2014, from Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano:
“Reserve the See of San Diego for McElroy.”
Bishop McElroy, you say, “This is a moment when the bishops of our nation, in union with the Holy Father, should be focused solely on comprehensively revealing the truth …,.”
Well, what is the truth? Did AB Viganò lie?
We have been waiting for decades to hear the truth from our bishops.
The Bishop is making these comments as he howls at the moon !!!
“Methinks thou doth protest too much…”
Bishop McElroy will need to put on his armor once he sets out on his parish tours to meet with
parishioners. If these messages are any indication of what people are thinking and saying, the
Bishop may experience “shell shock”.
How can we determine and gauge the truth if we don’t know what the truth is or whose version is worthy of belief?
I’m happy to be an “ideological warrior within the Church”!! As a bishop. McElroy should be too, but lo, his loyalties are elsewhere. Time for him to resign, hopefully with lots of his clerical cohorts.
Archbishop Vigano had nothing to gain and everything to lose by telling the truth and naming the names. He still did it. As opposed to McElroy and his cohorts who have everything to lose (their positions of power) by telling the truth. In 16 years as a parishioner in McElroy’s former parish in San Francisco Bay Area, i have never once hard him teaching or defending the truth of Catholic faith. All his homilies without exception were current movie reviews, most of which a bishop of Catholic Church should not be watching in the first place.
Here’s my question for McElroy: how do you know Vigano’s letter contains “tendentious distortions?” Would you simply correct them for all of us to read? Thanks in advance, Excellency!
I recall a well known politician who was confronted with a thoroughly well documented accusation against her. Her reply, “That’s just outrageous.”
I don’t believe anything that comes out of his mouth. His credibility is completely shot. Zero. Gone. Done. A complete fraud.
I think that a great many of our current prelates– and the Pope– should face the fact that they are not truly sincere Catholics — nor Christians– and should put in their resignations, ASAP– along with heretical priests like Fr. Jame Martin, etc. etc.!! Let true, devout Catholic prelates replace them all– like Cardinal Sarah, Cardinal Burke, and several others– let them be our true Pope and true prelates! And let the false lay “Cafeteria Catholics” (like Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Justice Anthony Kennedy, etc.) leave the Church too, along with their big “moneybags”– and go someplace else!– and leave us alone, to follow our beloved True Christ!
Bishop McElroy accused Archbishop Vigano of lying in his recent declaration and says it is because of his hatred for Pope Francis and all that he has taught. Well, Bishop McElroy we have it on record in your own hand a forward to Building Bridges by the sodomite loving James Martin, SJ. Are you only sodomite loving or yourself a sodomite? Your straw house is about to crumble- Good ridence.
Linda Marie,
And add Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco to your list of real deal AB’S.
He just put out a letter yesterday that put tears in my eyes, literally!!!
We in San Francisco are truly BLESSED to have him as our Shepherd!
Elizabeth T.– Thanks for your reply! I agree, Abp. Cordileone is excellent– a true, devout Catholic prelate!
Oh, sure, McElroy… Vigano’s lying. That’s why Cardinal Weurl has gone off the grid and into hiding while the Vatican figures out how to sneak him out of the country before the Feds arrest him under RICO statutes and he spills the beans about the corruption in the Church going all the way to the top.
I’m sick to death of the Church’s perverted, corrupt leadership. It’s like the mafia now. International organized homosexual crime. Maybe it will be known as the homofia.
Andrew,
It;s called the LAVENDER MAFIA!!!!!!
Andrew, I agree with you. But did you have to insult the Mafia by lumping them with the McCarrick-Wuerl-Cupich-McElroy types?
Bishop McElroy had his mitre reserved by Secretary of State Parolin. The force of Homoheresy runs strong in the American Church. Just look at Cardinals Cupich, Tobin and Ferrell. Below a link to a prescient article.

Where is “Catherine/The Truth Hurts” who posted here with such frequency about all these things including saying “Rome knows how bad it is”.
She posted not too long ago.
I would have thought she would want to add to all this.
The “pathway to partisanship” is what has led McElroy and others to trade the Deposit of the Faith for a Left-Wing bowl of lentils. Look to the heresy you’re promoting, Excellency. Others are, and now are putting that together with the favored sins of those misusing power.
Preach the truth in season and out, or give up the collar and seek a job in some NGO promoting the new world order. Sick.
2020 Update. It is always interesting to check older articles. This author’s “commentary” was on the Diocese of San Diego website and seems hypocritical. Bishop McElroy’s opinion on the “testimony” of the former Papal Nuncio seems to promote the very thing he is against.
But on a historical perspective we now conform the Marxism of the Democratic Party, The Holy Father’s “earthly” political and economical governance on the Global Climate Emergency, (formerly man made ice-age, cooling/flooding/warming…etc) and clearly supporting a New World Order. The NWO is the very worst failures of Capitalism joining with the worst of Communism. Neither are supported by the Catechism .
Covid-19, engineered for Gain of Function is the mechanism for The Great Reset. This resets the world economy to one of neo-feudalism. Totalitarian government control and supplied by only giant corporate monopolies. The censorship of scientists and doctors with opposing evidence. Christians, conservatives being banned.
And finally, mail-in voting ..not even allowed in war-torn,banana republic countries..
How much more blatant corruption of the last 2 generations by Marxism in the Church, schools, government, and propaganda
,
