Additional observations Star of the Sea Church is a historic church in the archdiocese of San Francisco. It was established as a mission in 1887 and as a parish in 1894. It is located in the Inner Richmond neighborhood, between the Presidio and Golden Gate Park (don’t be surprised if it’s foggy!) It’s an old San Francisco church in the traditional style; there’s a magnificent image of the Blessed Mother overhead near the altar area.
Thank you for posting Star of the Sea as Churches Worth Driving to…
The TLM is growing. Starting Monday 9-9-13 Mas in the EF will be celebrated daily M-F at 730am.
Will are striving to become a personal parish. If people want to have weddings, baptisms, extreme unction and funerals in the old rite email us.
Dear TLM, please excuse my ignorance, but what is a personal parish?
Thank you Arcbishop Cordileone and Father Mazza. What we most need are WEEKLY TLMs. In this way we can build the choirs and altar servers needed. Without anweekly TLM we cannot develop. Remember, when you travel to attend a TLM donate very heavily to the collection. We can make a difference even in these difficultn V2 times. Whenever you travel to new lands always check the indispensable Wikkimissa for the true mass where you are going.
Una Voce nucleates the remnants of those of us that will end in the catacombs.
Tomorrow join Pope Francis in fasting and praying the Rosary to avoid war in Syria. Our pope has scored a Goal from midfield on this one gesture. Here’s to many more.
Gratias, the Wikkimissa website refers one to “traditional Masses” offered by the priests of the Society of St. Pius V and the Congregation of St. Pius V. They are not in union with Rome.
“What we most need are WEEKLY TLMs.”
Well, Gratias, that’s precisely what this article is talking about: 11:00 a.m. each Sunday. That’s weekly.
Right next door, at St. Monica’s, the TLM is celebrated daily, by Father William Young.
Father Mark Mazzi is the ‘real deal’ when it comes to Priests!!!!!
What a blessing he is at whatever parish he is assigned.
I happened to go to noon Mass at Star of the Sea last Wednesday—for far from the first time—I went to the first Extraordinary Form Mass a couple of months ago, but I live too far (and/or am too lazy) to drive there every Sunday. And I’ve gone there when I have been in the neighborhood many times in the last 50 years. Two good things to say about it: (1) It looks like a Catholic Church. (2) The priest (the no 2 man) did not preach a homily. He also celebrated well, ad libbing only a little bit, but, hey, you can’t have everything. I endorse the assertion that it is worth driving to, within reason.
Don’t forget the Missa Cantata on Saturday, September 14, at 10 AM ( The Exaltation of the Holy Cross). This Mass is followed by an Italian luncheon!
And if you can’t make the 7:30 AM time for the weekday Mass at Star of the Sea, it is also celebrated on weekdays at 12 Noon at St. Monica’s Church also on Geary Boulevard at 23rd Avenue, a bit west of Star of the Sea .
This parish hosted a prayer vigil before the 2013 West Coast Walk for Life. San Jose Bishop Thomas Daly attended, along with the Sisters of Life. Obviously someone in charge here knows the importance of spiritual warfare. Beautiful, old fashioned church, go to the Tridentine mass in this sacred place, it’s a gem!
“TLM of SF”: This is wonderful news! Hopefully your efforts to have Star of the Sea made a Personal Parish will be successful. In fact, this should be a focus of letter writing by all bloggers to the good Archbishop. And, such a designation is a wonderful way to build up parishoners for a failing parish. So many bishops have flatly refused to do this, preferring to sell the Church property, or destroy it, rather than wind up as a “Traditional” Catholic Church. Good luck at Judgment Day! But, the work of Archbishop Cordileone has been pretty good regarding this Church. Hopefully, its success will beget other bishops to do the same; it only takes a few before others start to notice. These are lemmings of the first order, after all.
