Homilies Judge for yourself; listen to the pastor’s homilies at www.saintvictor.org. Among the auxiliaries with whom this writer is familiar, Father John Caronan is very solid, as is Father James Fryar of the Fraternity of St. Peter. All priests have the ongoing challenge of being pastorally sensitive to the large “gay” community of West Hollywood which surrounds it yet standing up for Church teaching.
Fellow parishioners An English-speaking community; all Masses are in English.
Parking Plenty
Acoustics Fine
Cry room Yes, on the right side up towards the altar as you enter.
Additional observations St. Victor’s was established in 1906 and served rail and oil workers. The current church was built in 1960. It’s located off the busy Sunset strip. Its members over the years included many Hollywood celebrities, such as Vincent Price, Ricardo Montalban, Loretta Young and Cesar Romero. The statue of Mary in front of the church was a gift from Danny Thomas. Msgr. John J. Devlin, pastor of St. Victor’s from 1929-76, served as head of the Legion of Decency, which had significant influence over Hollywood’s movies until the 1960s. The church interior is attractive, with stained glass windows, Stations of the Cross mosaics and nice statues.
Nice view of the card table.
How often do they have the TLM? Why not make it a regularly scheduled, convenient time every Sunday?
Can you get other sacraments in their “extraordinary” form? Why not?
It’s not a card table. Please try and show some respect for the Mass.
Since “respect for the Mass” is the premiere value, can Our Fellow Catholic cite anywhere in the constitutions and decrees of Vatican II, or, as well as in Paul VI’s Missale Romanum (1969, an apostolic constitution), where (1) a table is to be used for the Roman Rite; or (2) if it is not a table, where it is authorized that a table-like altar is to be detached from the reredos and the much-execrated “high altar” and turned around “versus populum”? By the way, the 2003 General Instruction always uses the word “altar”, never “table”, and that the altar must be “fixed” (298-ff).
Knock oneself out, Our Fellow Catholic(s). Let’s show some respect for what Vatican II actually says about “the Mass”.
By the way, the 2014 version of GIRM (nn. 295-308) is the same: the only “table” referenced in these is the “Table of Contents”.
An altar is for a divine sacrifice, a table is for a human memorial meal.
You can go to the TLM there. Sunday evenings at 7:00 pm. Father Fryar from the Fraturnity of the Society of Saint Peter. During the week there is Holy Mass in the Chapel. I believe at 7:00 am. Friday is at 7:00pm and Saturday, 8:00 am. The table you see in the front is not a card table. Please show respect. Mons. Murphy does Mass and is in a wheel chair.
It is indeed a nice church, granted the “dinner table” with the table cloth has to go since they have a nice high altar in the background and a communion rail. It is a challenge however being in West Hollywood and surrounded by the gay community but guess what I bet that there are many gays that attend the Holy Mass here and don’t cause problems at all, and I do understand the TLM is attended by many gay parishioners who are very devoted to the TLM. Yes I will hear nasty comments about this but it is better than having Novus Ordo. Pray that they practice celibacy and for supporting the TLM at St. Victor’s.
Janek, you seem surprised that gays would want to attend Mass and not cause problems.
Indeed, Janek, i went to a same sex wedding ceremony last summer, and the first person I met there sings in a TLM choir. She is straight, but obviously OK with gays and same sex marriage.
Only a half hour for confessions in a week?
At the TLM mass confession is available before mass , as well as the TLM mass Mon- Sat in the old convent , which is in the back of the church parking area , check the FSSP LA website for more info . Fr. Fryar does the TLM mass exclusively at this parish , which has gone out of its way in true hospitality to the TLM community. God bless this parish for its kindness.
Many gays are drawn to Mass of All Times and I for one respect and appreciate them for their devotion to the True Mass, I would rather have them attend the Holy Mass than being drawn to the Novus Ordo.
