Additionally, the pastor has been working with a group of parishioners to establish a Sunday Tridentine Mass; currently, it is offered once a week. The celebrant is Father Joe Scerbo, a Franciscan priest who has been training with the Fraternity of St. Peter. (Father Scerbo has become an expert on Blessed Junipero Serra, and has been a strong defender of Serra against Serra’s critics.) The altar boys wear cassocks and surpluses, a choir sings Gregorian chant; other trappings include incense, a makeshift communion rail and bells. (If you live in the area and like to attend the Tridentine Mass, please join the congregation on the last Sunday of the month at 3 pm. As the “demand” increases for this Mass, it may become a regular Sunday Mass.)
Confessions Saturdays, 3:30 – 5 p.m., 8-9 p.m.
Names of priests Father Dave Heney, pastor. Father Thai Le, parochial vicar. Father Jim Maher and Father Joe Scerbo, in residence.
Special groups/activities Perpetual adoration, open to the general public, 6 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Monday night classes on Catholicism; Faith & Family Ministry, which includes NFP and Theology of the Body classes and Men’s and Women’s programs; Respect Life Ministry; Home Schoolers; Serra Club; Separated, Divorced, Widowed Catholics; Italian Catholic Federation; Mission Circle; Young Adult Group/The Rock
Music Depends on the Mass. If you like more traditional music, the Sunday 10:45 a.m. is the Mass for you. The 9 a.m. features more contemporary music, and the 5:30 p.m. is a youth Mass that is more contemporary yet (but no drums!).
School Yes, K-8.
Fellow parishioners A predominantly English-speaking community.
Parking No problem.
Acoustics Fine.
Additional observations St. Paschal is a parish of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, located in Ventura County. Strong points include its perpetual adoration chapel and strong programs for youth. There is a significant orthodox contingent which attends the parish, some of whom are pursuing the weekly Tridentine Mass.
Thanks be to God a pastor following the desire of the Holy Father. Pray God we had more pastors like this in the diocese of Fresno.
“The altar boys wear cassocks and surpluses, a choir sings Gregorian chant; other trappings include incense, a makeshift communion rail and bells.” oh great gobs of blue, batman, the catholic church now has TRAPPINGS?!? and the poor altar boys having to buy their vestments from a surplus store. still trying to figure out what a “makeshift communion rail” is – maybe a hologram?
Max,
Please come and worship with us on Sunday July 29th at 3:00 PM.
Take the 101 or 118 to the 23, then take the Janss off ramp, turn West to the church. You will find a joyous and respectful community which kneels for communion at a “makeshift” communion rail composed of a semi circle of kneelers that demark the sanctuary.
sieber, thanks for explaing what the “makeshift communion rail” was – it makes sense now. as for the surplus/surplice comment, i was just joking. many people make spelling mistakes (not me, of coursse!!!), for example confusing ALTAR and ALTER, or SURPLICE and SURPLUS.
Max,
I caught the misspellings, too.
Hope you can make it & enjoy all the trappings. :-)
My message was lost in the transition from the other format used by California Catholic Daily, but I think it is worth posting again. Fr. Henley says the Rosary on a site put out by St. Paschal Baylon Church. It is called “Come Pray the Rosary with Us.” It has a place to put in one’s intentions; one can chose from different backgrounds, and one can either say the Rosary with a picture of the inside of St. Paschal Baylon with Fr. Henley and the parishioners or picutres of sights in the Holy Land. Others are praying the Rosary with you, night and day, usually around ninety to a hundred people at a time.
A correction: actually the website is just called “Come Pray the Rosary”.
Sorry! again. It is Fr. Dave Heney not “Fr. Henley”.
I am a lifelong parishioner of St. Paschal Baylon Parish. We are truly blessed to have this gem of a Catholic community within the Conejo Valley. If you live in the area come join us for any of the events and Masses that occur here each day, you will find your heart’s desire in this Eucharistic community.
