Archdiocese of San Francisco to hold Rosary rally in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, Jubilee Year
On the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Oct. 4, the Archdiocese of San Francisco is set to hold the Bay Area Rosary Rally in honor of its patron and the Jubilee Year of Hope.
The day will begin at 7 a.m. with a pilgrimage walk from St. Anthony of Padua to the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral.
At the cathedral, there will be talks given in English and Spanish on St. Francis and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Confession will also be available.
At 10 a.m., Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will offer Mass at the cathedral, followed by Eucharistic Adoration, recitation of the Rosary, and Benediction.
Participants have the opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence, as the cathedral is a designated Jubilee pilgrimage site.

This is good. Please remember they started building this cathedral in 1967, when Archbishop Cordileone was an 11-year-old. Can some exercise restraint and not make negative comments about a cathedral he “inherited?”
Archbishop McGucken built it.
Also popular then, in 1967, the San Francisco neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury became the epicenter of the Summer of Love, a cultural phenomenon that drew over 100,000 young people in search of peace, love, sex and alternative ways of living. This countercultural movement was characterized by psychedelic music, new art forms, experimentation with drugs like LSD, and a rejection of mainstream American society and the Vietnam War. The event was preceded by the Human Be-In in January 1967 and fueled by media attention and Scott McKenzie’s song “San Francisco,” which invited people to join the movement.
A cultural revolution struck our nation shortly after the close of the Second Vatican Council.
Let us pray for another cultural revolution, a positive one, now, in our time.
The lawless, filthy, promiscuous, dope-ridden “hippie ” garbage of the secular world, in 1967, had nothing to do with serious, devout Catholics. I and my family avoided it all. It was actually a continuation of the promiscuous, filthy, gay-infested, dope-ridden, rebellious world of untalented Beatnik misfits– who pretended to be “artists.” Many were atheists and anti-American Communists. They were extremely irresponsible, immoral and rebellious– and together with lawless, degenerste rockstars, tragically influenced insecure, miseducated, impressionable young kids– unguided by parents, schools, and churches– to adopt their “lifestyle” — and destroy their lives. We used to make fun of the Beatnik “pretend artist” misfit degenerates….
My comment of Sept. 26 at 6:12pm, got too long and was edited. Anyway– since 1967, I have daily prayed for a restoration of our Lost Civilization– Gone to the “barbarians,” as in ancient Rome. And since the first Sunday in April of 1969, when my parish began the use of the 1969 Novus Ordo Missae– after waiting for it for some time, during Vatican II– the great shock, betrayal and hurt overwhelmed me, and moved me to likewise pray for God to help our poor Catholic Church– and save Christendom– doomed to tremendous destructions that lay ahead. Although on thst day, I also noted, that things may get repaired in our Church well beyond our lifetimes– that’s the way it always goes. Read history– you will see.
I don’t get these rosary rallies. Seems lame to me. My diocese does one too. Becase both words start with “r”? Why not a rosary rodeo then? That sounds dumb, you might say. Well, a rodeo is no dumber than a rally. Might even be more entertaining.
Prayer is not dumb and the purpose of prayer is not to entertain.
You’re free not to go or pray the Rosary at all. But, why do you feel compelled to publicly insult those who do?
And, feel free to bring your Rosary beads, prayer book or Bible to the rodeo.
Bull riders need all the prayer they can get. And it’s entertaining. You’ll see more than your your own bull there.
This is wonderful news to have a rosary rally on the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi the the Patron Saint of Italy. Saint Francis of Assisi pray for us.
You would probably say, if it were held on October 1, “This is wonderful to have a rosary rally on the Feast Day of Saint Therese de Lisieux, the patron saint of France.”
Why comment on a coincidence that has no deeper meaning or significance? The first Saturday in October was chosen. In a future year, it will be October 1.
Unrestrained– please re-read the article. St. Francis of Assisi is the Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Not St. Therese of Lisieux. That is why this Rosary Rally is being scheduled for St. Francis’ Feast Day, Oct. 4th– also, in honor of the Jubilee Year of Hope. The SF Cathedral is a designated Jubilee Year pilgrimage site– and you can gain a plenary indulgence. Wonderful opportunity!
Thanks for the close-up picture of Our Lady of Maytag.
If you wanted to replace it every few years, you should’ve gone with GE or Frigidaire.
Apparently, you like agitators.
Every time I see it, I get agitated.
It’ll all come out,
I think you front-loaded your comment.
Ugly cathedral suited for an ugly city.
Yes, that “cathedral” is unnaturally “ugly!” WHY?? It was a horror as bad as a nuclear bomb– to see the steady anarchistic overthrow of ancient and excellent, well-established, God-ordained structures in every single area of human life and culture, in Western Civilization– since the advent of Modernism, in the late 19th century. An unliveable, dehumanizing, toxic wasteland resulted. Not only in fields of religion and philosophy, questioning the Bible and existence of God– but ugly, dehumanizing experimentation, de-structuring and anarchism in fields of art, architecture, literature, music, polititical science, social sciences (Maxism, Communism, socialism, etc.) psychology (Freud and sexually-based human psychological development from birth– deviant and sick), and destruction of Manhood and Womanhood, Marriage and Family– and all sorts of corrupt, deviant, unnatural and sinful beliefs.
Maytag and fugly,
Is there anything the Archbishop could do that you wouldn’t complain about?
This isn’t a post about church architecture (over which Archbishop Cordileone had no control).
Griping, grumpiness and whining are not indications of orthodoxy.
Or, are you dissenting leftists who don’t like the archbishop?
“Lord, deliver me from sad faced saints.” – Saint Teresa of Avila
This is a Catholic website? Just where is the respect for Our Lady of the Rosary– and for a faithful Catholic Archbishop encouraging this great devotion?? Devotion to Our Blessed Mother and to her Holy Rosary– a sacramental– has brought countless beautiful Divine graces from Heaven, to millions of Catholics, all through the ages!
You can be a good Catholic without praying the rosary.
To not required– You need to respect the Catholic Archbishop– and respect the Catholic Rosary devotion.

Why was this disrespectful, anti-Catholic, filthy comment accepted by a “Catholic” website? When I was young, secular news sources like the “San Francisco Chronicle” and the “New York Times” had a lot of respect for God and religion. They published regular religious sections, with lists of churches, synagogues, Mass or worship service times, special religious devotions, church news and activities, sermon titles, regular columns by Bishop Sheen and others, and encouraged American families to regularly attend the church (or synagogue, if Jewish) of their choice. If a family moved to a new town or city, it was important to find a new church there. Or, if Catholic, find their Diocese, assigned parish, and Catholic school. If you were hospitalized, your religious faith was written on your medical chart, next to your name. America was once a country of faith in God and religious people.
Archbishop Cordileone has called for prayers regarding the very serious problems we have suffered of gun violence in our country. And our Pope requests that we offer a daily Rosary during the month of October, for peace in the world and an end to violence and war. This is certainly serious. Hopefully, everyone will participate in these religious devotions.
Pray to end the government shutdown now too.
