Question: When is a Synod of Bishops no longer a Synod of Bishops?
Answer: When the participants are not bishops.
This year Pope Francis will appoint 70 non-bishops to participate, as voting members, in the October meeting of the Synod of Synodality. These lay participants will represent only slightly more than 20% of the Synod’s voters. Still their involvement raises the question. If it is a Synod of Bishops, why are lay people voting?
The involvement of non-bishops in a Synod of Bishops is not entirely new. At past meetings a few priests were appointed, to represent male and female religious communities. But this year the representation of non-bishops will be much greater, including lay people as well as priests. And the Vatican is anxious to tell us that half of the non-bishops will be women.
What is the significance of this change? Vatican officials boast that this year will see a much broader consultation with lay Catholics. But of course bishops have always been free to consult with anyone whose views they deem worthwhile. And for that matter the Synod itself is a consultative body; its product is not legislation, but a set of recommendations that the Pontiff may or may not endorse.
Nevertheless the Synod of Bishops is an important expression of collegial government — a recognition that all bishops, as successors to the apostles, have a special charism that enables them to lead and guide the Church. The Second Vatican Council, which called for a revival of the Synod, taught (in Lumen Gentium 23) that every bishop, “as a member of the episcopal college and legitimate successor of the apostles, is obliged by Christ’s instruction and command to be solicitous for the whole Church…” This is a duty proper to bishops, who have a corresponding grace of state to carry out that duty. In a hierarchical Church it is bishops — not priests, not religious, not lay people — who participate in the collegial decision-making process.
Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich of Luxembourg, the Jesuit prelate who as relator-general will chair the meetings of the October session, insists that the bishops have not given up their distinctive role. Questioned by Vatican News whether this meeting will truly remain a Synod of Bishops, he responded emphatically: “Yes, it remains so because the bishops are the majority!”
True, but anyone who has participated in a democratic process knows that a minority can constitute a decisive voting bloc, and with 20% of the votes, the lay participants will certainly be an important influence on the Synod’s outcome. Moreover, Cardinal Hollerich remarked, in the same interview: “We do not have a synodal parliamentarianism, where the majority decides and everyone follows.” So which is it: a majority decision, which bishops control, or a free-wheeling process, in which lay participants have equal voice?
And who will these lay voters be? The Pope will choose their names from lists provided by the world’s bishops, on the basis of several rounds of local meetings leading up to the worldwide session. Two points should be noted here. First, the lay voters will be chosen by the bishops — in the end, by Pope Francis. Second, they will be selected from among the participants in the preparatory meetings. So it is a considerable stretch to suggest that they represent the views of ordinary lay Catholics….

They’re trying to Protestantize the Catholic Church, which clearly has been infiltrated by Her enemies.
Learn the Catholic Faith.
I have, that’s how I know what’s happening.
Maybe you don’t know Protestantism, then.
Wait, he’s upset because lay people will vote.
then, he’s upset because they are not ordinary enough.
Somebody just has a bee in their bonnet.
What difference does it make?
So, I should, as a woman, feel honored, gratified, nay, “empowered” to know that half of the heretics meeting to desolate My Lord’s Church are also women? Words fail me.
Here’s a word for you – Eve.
“MY Lord’s Church”? The Lord’s Church.
Are you praying for the synod?
These people in the Synod are not heretics.
Please, there is a commandment against this.
““We do not have a synodal parliamentarianism, where the majority decides and everyone follows.”” I am not sure what to make of this. It would seem on the one hand that Hollerich is saying minority voices could theoretically prevail, but on the other hand is so then the bishops aren’t going to take it kindly if their majority position is rejected. I guess I am confused.
Yes, you are confused.
It is not a legislature.
It does not make laws.
The Bishops don’t listen to us. The Bishops need to get out among the people. The Bishops …May they all rot …
The Pope is going to let people speak. The Bishops will be among the people. The People … May the all rot …
Let’s remember that WE are the church. It’s about time we had a say!
What the ….?
Yes, Bob One let us allow nearly 3 generations of un-catechized Catholic have their say..lets see what will they demand 1) gay marriage 2) women priests 3) more feminist theology 4) contraception etc etc etc,, what there wont be is call to holiness, unless you consider “green energy” a path to holiness. It will be nothing less then secular values of corrupt secular culture…well done Vatican 2 well done
within a few years we will look just like the mainline protestants only the church’s will be far more empty. No Bob One We are not the Church. CHrist is.
We are the Mystical Body of Christ and you are supposed to be praying for the Synod so that they hear the Holy Spirit and do not do what you are afraid of but rightly perceive the Mind of Christ. and the Will of the Father.
What I think might be done-but I am speculating- is that the laypeople who were on the ground at the local meetings or who helped with gathering the survey data (which really was not what was supposed to happen but this whole synod process was very misunderstood in many diocese.) will be the ones invited. Possibly, the lay people who know more about certain areas than the bishops. So what? Their have been prophecies that it will be lay people who preserve the Church.
And the reason you would do this is because they would have a greater contact with the people than the bishops who were not at the meeting and just saw compiled data.
I do think there will be some discussion of some of what you are concerned about but we already know that the Church cannot marry gay couples, that the Church does not have the authority from God to ordain women to the priesthood (I expect women deacons will be a topic). I doubt feminism will be an issue because the Church already teaches that men and women are equal but they may look at the charism of women, of lay people. Contraception is a mortal sin and cannot be approved.
There is always a call to holiness from the Church. I wish you would actually read the Vatican II documents.
We will never be Protestants. All these things you are anxious about are the smoke of Satan. Have faith.
I hope they discuss catechesis along with evangelization.
“Church cannot marry gay couples,” yet the Church in German will go ahead and “bless” gay “relationships” with opposition from Rome,
“hat the Church does not have the authority from God to ordain women to the priesthood ” the progressives are already trying to revisit this issue
“I doubt feminism will be an issue because the Church already teaches that men and women are equal but they may look at the charism of women, of lay people. Contraception is a mortal sin and cannot be approved.”
I well aware of what the Church teaches, what you fail to realize is that there are entrenched forces in the Church seeking to undermine all of its teachings.
“I wish you would actually read the Vatican II documents.” would that change the fact that its has been a galactic failure
The Synod was rigged from the start by the Jesuits who will push the values of this corrupt culture on the Church
You can revisit the issues-and maybe we should-because there are a lot of Catholics who do not understand them and could use a revisit and an explanation.
It is not going to change.
But lets just say it did, what are you so afraid of?
Hell?
For yourself?
For the bishops?
What is really going on?
Will the pachamama idol get a vote? She was at a recent meeting of Cardinals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvt7R4MIP68&t=20s
Can I vote too?
You already had your input if you participated in the local surveys or meetings.
Lucy Phur, that is a compilation of archived video footage, not video from a recent meeting of Cardinals.
That statue s not pachamama.
There is no problem with this.
I think the person writing this just does not understand.
Think about it and pray about it more.
Pray the prayer for the synod.
Lay people have charisms too.
Lay people can work for the good of the whole church.
This is making a mountain out of nothing.
ADSUMUS
We have come, O Lord, Holy Spirit,
we have come before you,
hampered by our many and grievous sins,
but for a special purpose
gathered together in your name.
Come to us and be with us
and enter our hearts.
Teach us what we are to do
and where we ought to tend;
show us what we must accomplish,
in order that, with your help,
we may be able to please you in all things.
May you alone
be the author and the finisher of our judgments,
who alone with God the Father and his Son
possess a glorious name.
Do not allow us to disturb the order of justice,
you who love equity above all things.
Let not ignorance draw us into devious paths.
Let not partiality sway our minds
or respect of riches or persons pervert our judgment.
But unite us to you effectually
by the gift of your grace alone,
that we may be one in you
and never forsake the truth;
As we are gathered together in your name,
so may we in all things
hold fast to justice tempered by mercy,
so that in this life
our judgment may in no way be at variance with you
and in the life to come
we may attain to everlasting rewards for deeds well done. Amen.
Or:
We stand before you, Holy Spirit, conscious of our sinfulness,
but aware that we gather in you name.
Come to us, remain with us, and enlighten our hearts.
Give us light and strength to know your will,
to make it our own,
and to live it in our lives.
Guide us by your wisdom, support us by your power,
for you are God, sharing the glory of Father and Son.
You desire justice for all:
enable us to uphold the rights of others;
do not allow us to be misled by ignorance
or corrupted by fear or favor.
Unite us to yourself in the bond of love
and keep us faithful to all that is true.
As we gather in your name
may we temper justice with love,
so that all our decisions may be pleasing to you,
and earn the reward promised to good and faithful servants.
You live and reign with the Father and the Son,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.

I’ll tell you what’s going on and why so much of Catholic church politics is being driven by people with Democratic Party and Green Whacko agendas.
Most of these people wish they could be big political players in Sacramento or Washington, D.C., but they lack the skill, intelligence, connections or financial resources to succeed in government politics. Yet they want the rush and the feeling of being important and making a political difference. So they become big fish in little ponds by bringing politics to Catholic parishes and dioceses. These people have spent years, nay decades, pushing for ecclesiastical change/legislation that would promote their Democrat and Green agendas within the church.
They are just small-time, wannabe politicians wreaking havoc in the church instead of in Sacramento or Washington.
Similar to how a lot of the people composing “liturgical” music for OCP are wannabe rock stars, and how most of the people leading guitar bands at parish Masses wish they could be pop stars. They can’t make it in real life, so they reach a smaller measure of success and fame in the church.
So, Rome Reports misreported the recent news story by using old footage? And, where, then, were those Cardinals with that whatever you want to call it?
And, that is a pachamama image. If it weren’t, the Pope would not have apologized when one was thrown into the Tiber River:
https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/42636/pope-francis-apologizes-that-amazon-synod-pachamama-was-thrown-into-tiber-river
You can watch this about the incident .
I have googled Rome Reports (never heard of it before) and I see no mention of a recent meeting of Cardinals. On the Vatican website, it looks like the last one was August 2022. I will see if I can find the source of that footage for you.
Thank you very much for posting that. I followed the advice of this priest and viewed the entire interview with Fr. Deacon Anthony Dragani (a brother Byzantine Catholic deacon). It was enlightening. And, it provided more information about and a context for what happened at the Vatican a few years ago with “pachamama.” Truth matters. As do charity, fairness and justice. Sometimes truth is counter to prevailing narratives. I encourage anyone who wants to know what happened at that controversial event at the Vatican to view the interview, linked here:
Look at that image…does anyone in their right mind think that is not a pagan idol. Despite this slick presentation the pachamama cannot be explained away…it was pagan worship.
Did you watch and listen to the interview, including the lengthy video of what actually happened?
Is someone “in their right mind” one who agrees with your presuppositions?
What if these guys, as well as others, are right that the figure was created by a Brazilian artist in the past 15 years?
It is not some ancient idol. While it may not be an appropriate way to depict Our Lady (especially, in our culture) as some have said it does, that does not make it an idol. And, that doesn’t make what happened idol worship (watch the video).
You might have led a crusade, but you’re on a wrong one this time.
It’s not a pachamama and it was not pagan worship.
bohemond, no it is not a pagan idol. I got neighbors that think that about statues in the Church. And they think we are idolaters.
Are you originally from another faith tradition?
bohemond, Christians, and Catholics are Christian, do not believe there are other gods than the Blessed Trinity. They do not believe in pachamama, much less worship it.
We believe in Blessed Virgin Mary and we have statues of her, but we do not worship Her or the statues.
To all the pachamama defenders, it was idol worship. I was born and will always be Catholic… And I watched the video…
Anyone who thinks pachamama is a depiction of Our Blessed Mother is idiotic
You were born a Catholic?
I am not a “pachamama defender.” But, I will seek and defend the truth. Since you said you watched the video, which included the actual event that happened at the Vatican, I would caution you about so quickly and publicly, while hiding behind anonymity, accusing those obviously Catholic men and women from the Amazon of idolatry. That’s a serious allegation.
Amazonian people have never worshipped Pachamama. The area that worshipped Pachamama is the Andes mountains.
You can see some real idols online and there are prayer services from people who travelled to the Andes and do the ceremony.
It is not at all what was at the Vatican.
There are 9 different pieces of video in that you linked to above.
The footage with the statue appears to be from late October (maybe 26th) in 2019.
It is not a meeting of Cardinals- you can tell that it is a meeting of bishops by the colors of the zucchettos.
I have seen other pictures of the event online. I found video on Youtube of the meeting (final session Amazon synod).
The statue is not in any of the photos or the video footage.
it may be doctored footage.
I have been looking on other videos on the Rome Reports account and they seem really legit.
There is a difference in the by-line on their usual stories and that one that you linked to.
I am wondering if their youtube account got hacked.
