The following comes from a Dec. 2 story posted on the Cardinal Newman Society website.
Among Catholic colleges and dioceses across the country there has been an apparent rise in the celebration of the Mass ad orientem, where the priest and congregation face the same direction, traditionally to the east. The Cardinal Newman Society spoke with chaplains from three colleges recommended in The Newman Guide about the Masses celebrated ad orientem on campus and what that type of worship brings to students.
At Christendom College in Front Royal, Va., the priest celebrates ad orientem during several weekly Masses—two in the Extraordinary form, as well as two in the Ordinary Form in English and one in Latin—College chaplain Father Stephen McGraw told the Newman Society….
Masses celebrated ad orientem give students “an opportunity to participate in liturgical prayer that leads them to contemplation,” said Father Hildebrand Garceau, chaplain at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, Calif. “All are facing liturgical east in one movement of prayer and offering. It seems to aid greatly in reducing distractions and helping students to focus on the liturgical action of the most powerful prayer in the universe—the Holy Mass.”
At Thomas Aquinas, Masses are said each morning in the Extraordinary Form which gives the undergraduates a “reverent, quiet, contemplative Mass,” said Fr. Garceau. Most Saturdays, a Mass is also said in the Ordinary Form.
Father John Healy at the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack, N.H., told the Society that Thomas More began to celebrate the Latin Mass ad orientem once a week on Fridays because of student demand. Students continue to tell him that the silence in the Mass “impresses them in a particular way” and is very helpful for them, he said.
Additionally, said Christendom’s Fr. McGraw, ad orientem worship “shows our communion with the Eastern Church, which for the most part celebrates the liturgy of the Eucharist ‘ad orientem.’” He also noted that the priests at Christendom have “expressed their appreciation” for the chance to celebrate these Masses for the students.
According to Fr. Healy, bishops in the dioceses that celebrate the Extraordinary Form say that a lot of the participation is from the younger generation. This gives hope for liturgy and Church tradition both in the present and in the future, he said. It is encouraging to see students appreciate the traditional forms of the Mass.
Ave Maria University, the College of Saint Mary Magdalen, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Holy Apostles College and Seminary, the University of St. Thomas-Houston and Wyoming Catholic College also offer Masses ad orientem.

Importance of SILENCE –
CCC: ” 2717 Contemplative prayer is silence, the “symbol of the world to come” or “silent love.”
Words in this kind of prayer are not speeches; they are like kindling that feeds the fire of love.
In this silence, unbearable to the “outer” man, the Father speaks to us his incarnate Word, who suffered, died, and rose;
in this silence the Spirit of adoption enables us to share in the prayer of Jesus. ”
CCC: ” 2628 Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator.
It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil.
Adoration is homage of the spirit to the “King of Glory,” respectful silence in the presence of the “ever greater” God.
Adoration of the thrice-holy and sovereign God of love blends with humility and gives assurance to our supplications. ”
” We cannot achieve our human fulfillment without communing with God – and the deeper our prayer, the deeper our fulfillment. ” – Fr. Thomas Dubay
” “We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness.
God is the friend of silence.
See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…
We need silence to be able to touch souls.” – -Blessed Mother Teresa

Some may find the book “DOMINUS EST – It is the Lord!” by Bishop Athanasius Schneider interesting.

This is a nice story, but remember that the “Soviets” permitted everyone to have a small plot of land upon which they could grow their own crops, but the country was in the iron-grip of a totalitarian communalism, with no rights for personal property. Isn’t what is described merely a form of “letting the [Traditionalist] steam out” at Catholic schools? Don’t forget that Francis said that the demand for the TLM among the young was a “fad”.
Take a look at the mass schedule at, say, Christendom College. Virtually all masses are Novus Ordo, with two during the week as Novus Ordo, with Latin, and one being a Novus Ordo with Latin and said Ad Orientum. What about the Extraordinary Form TLM? There are two such masses, said on TUE night and FRI afternoon. (A student there can also go to near-by Front Royal to St. John the Baptist, where very good Pastor Fr. Fasano has a 12:30 pm TLM.)
The TLM, and the full greatness of Catholic Tradition, will never, ever be permitted in the Catholic Church unless . . . And what is that? A true Catholic counter-revolution, an “Uprising” (to quote Michael Voris), that takes back the buildings, the seminaries, the masculinity of the Mass and of Catholic worship, and, most importantly, the focus of the Church on achieving salvation. It is that simple. The Newman Report is nice, but it deals with examples of tolerance, not change.
St. Chris – When done according to GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal), both forms of the Mass are Holy.
There are some who prefer the OF Mass, so get off your high horse.
You personally drive people away from the EF Mass with your ranting and raving. Encourage people in a positive manner. Talk to your Priest and confess your sins.
And as an FYI – Voris never bad mouths the OF Mass, and for you to imply that he does is sinful and scandalous and a lie.
“Al” your comment is nonsensical: Nothing was said about Voris “bad mouthing” the N.O. (as he clearly finds it licit, which it is). What Voris does say, and which the blog you wrongly refer to repeats, is that it is time for a “Catholic Uprising”. Try to be accurate with your criticism, at least.
Of course the present Church is going to say that both Masses are “holy”. However, that is not what the blog is about; did you take the time to read it?
To repeat, the “New Catholic Church” actively dislikes the TLM, and all Tradition. The reasons for this are many, but, to a good number of believers, the New Church wants to accomplish things that it cannot with centuries of Tradition against it. The New Mass is the sort of vehicle through which many of the “reforms” can be reached; this is not possible with the Traditional Mass.
Try to spend an hour or two looking at news about the destruction of your Church, man. Things are in the final stages of destruction as we speak. Tradition can, and will, stop this, although the Vatican will do all it can, aided by the “Walking Dead” clergy like Cardinals Dolan, Wuerl, Abp. Cupich and many others. Let’s give communion to all their pro-abort legislative pals, and homosexual sodomites and fornicators. But, why bother speaking with you, you have clearly drank the Kool-Aid.
St. Chris – quit complaining and be glad that the EF Mass is growing.
Just because their are some in the Clergy who are not happy, does not mean that is the case for all of them.
The FSSP is in over 30 major diocese in the USA at the invite of the Diocese Bishop.
Many other Bishops have had the FSSP teach the Priests in their Diocese the EF Mass.
“Anonymous”, no, we need to yell all the louder, and with much more frequency.
Not certain of where you got your stats about the TLM growing, but its use is also shrinking. New bishops are always stopping existing TLMs, and a good number of bishops, while tolerating the TLM here and there do nothing to teach about the TLM and Traditional sacraments (and dump the TLM in particular parishes by simply moving “offending” priests to gether in a couple of parishes — Bishop Loverde of Arlington, VA is particularly adept at doing this, while he forbids any new construction to include altar rails).
Please try to educate yourself about the terrible persecution of brave young priests that wish to say the TLM. Just look at the evil done to the wonderful priest Micahael Rodriguez, who was the Administrator of the Sacred Heart Mission (Shafter, TX), and is now on a force six months sabbatical, directed by Bishop of El Paso Seitz. The crime? Wishing to say only the TLM, and directly attacking local jurisdictions that wish to provide homosexual “couples” with recognition, benefits, and the like.
Unfortunately, Fr. Rodriguez is not alone, and his treatment by Bishop Seitz, while praised throughout the Church, is relatively typical. Use of the TLM is more in danger, than growing.
St Chris, when you write things about other people (like Voris or anyone else) in the same posting that you bad mouth a Form of the Mass, you try to bolster your position and make people think that others bad mouth the OF Mass as well.
This is deceitful.
Thank you AL. I completely agree with you and have voiced exactly what you said about the GIRM and both forms of the Mass are holy!
Holy Communion at the EF Mass is received while kneeling and on the tongue.
Anyone attending an OF Mass who wishes to receive Holy Communion while kneeling and/or on the tongue may do so –
per GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, Nov, 2011); and the Vatican.

HOLY COMMUNION
1. Dispositions for the Reception of Holy Communion – Paragraphs 80-85;
2. The distribution of Holy Communion – Paragraphs 91-93. (right of the individual regarding kneeling and on the tongue).
https://fallibleblogma.com/index.php/on-kneeling-kneelers-and-altar-rails-by-cardinal-arinze/
Phil 2:10 “…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on the earth and under the earth.”
At the EF Mass, while giving Holy Communion to each individual the Priest says in Latin: “May the Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ keep thy soul unto life everlasting. Amen”. The individual has just received and therefore says nothing.
The patin (small plate) is held by the altar server under the chin of the individual receiving so that the consecrated host is not dropped.
At the OF Mass, while giving Holy Communion to each individual the Priest (or other person) says “Body of Christ”, and the individual says “Amen”.
Excellent comments MADDIE!
Everyone needs to be careful. Just because the ruling Liberal-Catholic group says that the Mass that they made up is licit, does not make it equal in graces received, or in Faith enriched, to the TLM. Given the prevailing logic to a number in this blogspot, this would mean that the Vatican could insist that everyone “enjoy the Holy Happy Meal” at Mass (with Kids getting the “Kid’s Meal”). Having someone in authority “bless” the Holy Big Mac does not make it something to be worshipped.
You also need to be careful given that this Church demand that everyone worship at the “altar” of the N.O. is accompanied by an entirely new set of “doctrines” and protocols (called “discipline” by our sissy cardinals like Cardinal Wuerl). These new doctrines actually eviscerate centuries long Catholic beliefs, which is their point.
Rorate Caeli of today contains a link to a powerful editorial, “From a LAX Church to an Agnostic Church” (Dec. 2014) (Vocogno Catholic Community, Diocese of Novara, Italy). This is what is happening in the “Alice in Wonderland” Church of today: “We have dug our own graves. Modernized Catholicism has dug its own grave by preaching a God who is pure indulgence; it has transformed itself into agnostic Catholicism , which even if not denying the existence of God, lives detached from Him, because for the Modern Church, God is not known.”
St. Chris, you turn people off with your ranting and raving rather than encouraging the attendance at the EF Mass.
Promote the Mass you prefer, but remember that both Forms of the Mass are Holy when done according to the rubrics. And neither should be disparaged.
“…St. Chris, you turn people off with your ranting and raving rather than encouraging the attendance at the EF Mass.”
You cannot speak for all, mous, despite the ‘doctrine’ of be nice that you seem to believe this is about. The ‘mass is holy’ line is nothing but a negation of rationale discussion which is necessary and should be discussed if only to get to the actual root of problems. Leaving a rite in place that allows for ‘innovations’ is problematic for these innovations are used to teach, slowly or quickly, that which is different and oft times not Catholic.
The level of ‘fear’ used to shut down those with honest observations and love of God and Church is amazing. But what are you being faithful to? The rite itself? Or the fruits for which the rite is intended to produce? Not seeing the forest for a single tree seems to be the order of your business in addition to those others who seem immune to their own lack of charity with regard to engaging in genuine dialog minus the name calling and/or assertion of superior fidelity.
We used to have discussions. Many of the people who had things to say have quit posting here. I don’t think you realize how much you have changed the comment section here. I imagine a lot of people just got sick of it. If you could obey the 10 post a day limit and not bicker with other posters but save your posts for some genuine rational (it is interesting that your wrote rationale) discussion of legitimate issues in the Church, it would help a lot
No one fears honest observations. And we don’t fear your misinterpretations of them. People try to help you see your errors.
The Roman Rite does not allow for innovations. I do not know where you get such misinformation.
“Anonymous”: The point is not preference, it is about understanding and knowledge. The Church’s Tradition has been robbed and now the robbers are attempting to cover their tracks with whitewash. Under the theory of “discipline” they will attempt to call black, white and evil, good. Soon, all Tradition will be banned, or reduced to a museum sideshow.
Most Catholics are completely ignorant of their Faith. The thieves in power are using the N.O., not to worship but as a vehicle to transmit heresy. Many priests do try to say the N.O. with some level of reverence, but they (and you) simply refuse to see even that form of Mass as high-jacked. The Vatican will change this and that in coming years, once they get everyone to begin “smelling the sheep” as Francis said.
Welcoming to Homosexuals, to remarried, to never married by having sex, to anyone that want it — a veritable Anglicanism of Catholicism. And, there will be words, so many words, trying to describe the beauty and wonder of its insanity. And, more and more Men will leave the Church, and screechy women will be given more and more to do that, well, the Pope will finally say, “come on, God does not mind surprises, let’s be open to his newness or something, and let’s let the ladies do it from now on.”
Not preference, Anonymous, just the need to return to Tradition to actually renew the Faith.
I attend both the EF and OF Masses, as long as it adheres to the rubrics for the area and the sermons are according to the moral teachings of the Church. There are some things I love about both. I like the Ad Orientem (Facing East); the Latin and kneeling to receive Communion; the feast for the older saints that were taken out of the newer Masses to make room for the feast days of the newer saints and the prayerful silence in the church, along with the beautifully uplifting and calming Gregorian Chant of the EF. What I like about the OF are the feasts of the newer saints; more Biblical readings; many of the hymns, especially the more traditional ones in English and the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. I see no problem with the Luminous Mysteries and really like them.
When the OF Mass was first established, only the priest recited the epistles and psalms, then that changed. Communicants knelt at the communion rail and received the eucharist from the priest only, on the tongue only, then that changed. Music was still traditional, then that changed. Mass was still called “Mass”, that too has changed.
SO what, Tracy? Does the person reciting scripture make it worth all the division you bring into the church?
Tracy,
That is exactly right!
The Rosary has nothing to do with either the OF or EF Mass. The Rosary is never said during any Mass.
However prior to each EF Mass, the Rosary is prayed together by those in attendance, rather than socializing.
