Comedian and CNN host W. Kamau Bell has been named the Frank Sinatra Chair in the Performing Arts at Santa Clara University for 2017-18. The Jesuit university’s website says, “Bell will mentor and engage with students, faculty, and the Santa Clara University community.”
Bell is a self-declared critic of the Church, as well as a supporter of same-sex marriage and abortion.About the Catholic Church, Bell said, “You’re not going to find a bigger critic of the Catholic Church than me. You can find a bigger one, but I certainly feel like I have no room for that. My wife is Catholic, we got married in a Catholic church, and I think that’s how you become a critic, because you see it up close.”
Dennis Gordon, professor of political science and director of the Center for the Arts and Humanities at SCU said, “As students struggle with their own identities and to understand why our nation is divided along so many lines, [Bell] offers a greater understanding of the dangers that racism, sexism, homophobia, income inequality, and the dumbing-down of our political discourse present.”

This guy will fit right in at Santa Clara. The only thing the school lacks to be complete is to hire Fr. James Martin, S.J.in the theology department.

Average 9-month salary of professors at SCU is $160k. Average effective salary is $207k. For an endowed, prestigious chair as this man will have, the salary is probably at least $250k.
Any Catholic who contributes to SCU and helps to fund such a travesty is insane.

As I commented regarding the article about LMU, schools such as Santa Clara cannot be considered Catholic. Not by a long shot. Most of the leadership of these colleges & universities are non-Catholic, and the rest are Catholic in name only. The bishops seemingly don’t care about the insidiousness that takes place on these campuses.
The bishops themselves are insidious. Not only do they not care, they support all of this. Liberalism has taken over. Hello?

If this not familiar with this man, he makes his living doing racist comedy. Is he really a racist or does he just do it to get laughs?
Fear not! Allowing a critical and dissenting voice will not destroy the Faith. This has been happening since the foundation of the Church. I feel stronger in my faith as a Catholic when I face and listen to critics.
But William Roberts, the students at this school deserve to be educated in the Faith, to learn about the Church and to treasure her truths. Having a barrage of dissenters mocking all things Catholic is contrary to this mission. Santa Clara parents are duped as well, and they are paying a tidy $um for this indignity.
In looking at their website, Catholicism is not a big thing. I never saw the word Catholic on the website. There is no theology major. I doubt any parent who was looking for a traditional Catholic college would pick this one.
Good thing that Santa Clara Screwy U gave an endowed chair to someone ‘safe’ like Kamau Bell, rather than someone really dangerous like Fr. Richard Perozich or Fr. Joseph Illo.
Now that would be dangerous.

What really hurts is that many of SCU’s, and other Catholic University’s, endowed chairs were set up by donors with the intention of [in particular] retaining the Jesuit and Catholic character of the university. The endowed chairs at SCU in philosophy and theology, for example, were initially set up, like the Frank Sinatra endowed position in the Performing Arts, to particularly accentuate a professor who was Catholic and formed in the Jesuit tradition—when they were collecting funds for these positions, that was part of the “sell”.

I did. SCU touts itself as “The Jesuit University in Silicon Valley”. Note well: it does not tout itself as Catholic.
That is not an oversight; it is deliberate. A friend of mine who works there told me that “Jesuit” sells in attracting donations and students and interest; “Catholic” doesn’t sell.

The biggest issue in his interracial marriage, he jokes, isn’t the fact that his wife is white and he’s black – “The biggest one is that she’s Catholic . . . and I’m sane.”
I saw the CNN show “United Shades of America” where Mr. Bell interviewed the KKK. I live in the South. I have seen the KKK once and it was almost 40 years ago. The only person I know who actually had the Klan burn a cross in their yard is white…and Catholic.
Whiny whiner/professional minority. Entire shtick is black victimization, white racism, and inequality proffered to eager mostly white liberal Uncle Toms in trendy cafe settings (he’d bomb at the Apollo). Even the semblance of racism sends him channeling the emotions of his inner 13-year old girl. That’s not to knock 13-year old girls or emotions. It’s just sad to see both in what should be a grown man.
A perfect fit at any Jesuit school.

I would never recommend this school to anyone who is a minority. Extreme lack of diversity and inclusion. Minorities are merely a marketing tool at SCU.
