The following appeared in a blog by Monsignor Charles Pope on the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., website August 9.
I am not sure why, but my memory was stirred today about a controversy back in 2004 in Los Angeles County, California. It involved The American Civil “liberties” Union. (Yes the same ACLU that this week sided against the First Amendment and against Religious Liberty by arguing that any business owner that opposes the HHS mandate is no different than a racist shop owner that refused to serve African Americans in the past).
In 2004 these ACLU radicals sued the County of Los Angeles arguing that the presence of a very tiny cross on the seal (see upper right) violated the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. Never mind that the cross was part of the history of that area, wherein Catholic Missionaries evangelized the area, established missions, and named most of the towns (including Los Angeles) for Catholic Saints. Never mind too, that the seal was dominated by a large image of Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit trees. Never mind all that, the cross had to go according to the radicals at the ACLU. Pomona could stay for all they cared.
Thus the County was forced to remove the Cross, choosing therefore to revamp the whole seal. To their credit they did put a mission Church on the new seal (see at lower right), though you’d sort of have to guess what it is, without a cross on top. Pomona was also on the outs and replaced by a very politically correct native woman.
Since that time many other battles to remove crosses (mostly won by us) have been undertaken. The latest battle is in Steubenville, OH where secularists have pressured the city to remove a cross from the City Logo. Never mind that the logo pictures the city skyline, and that the University of Steubenville is a dominant part of that skyline, and a major institution in that city. No, never mind, the cross has to go. The issue is headed to court. More HERE.
All this gets me thinking where the radical secularists and radical atheists/agnostics will turn next. Does it not make sense that they will turn to the very names of many American Cities, especially in places like California, Texas and Florida? Remember that “San” and “Santa” mean “Saint” in Spanish. “Cruz” means “Cross,” “Sacramento” means “Sacrament” and so on. How much longer will the radicals be able to “tolerate” such names that practically shout the Catholicism they hate most of all?
Consider the names of just a portion of the towns and places in question:
California: San Diego, San Miguel, San Francisco, San Bernadino, San Clemente, San Miguel, San Luis Obispo, San Jose, San Rafael, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles (aka, Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de la Porciuncula), Santa Cruz, Santa Clarita, Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, San Gabriel Mountains…..
Texas: Corpus Christi, San Antonio.
Florida: St. Augustine, St. Petersburg, Port St. Lucie, Santa Rosa Island, St. George Island, Port St. Joe.
Will they seek to rename these?

Well at lest Pomona-the Roman goddess of fruits and nuts-is still featured prominently on there.
Yes, the activist athiests and evil doers at ACLU will never stop.
Gay activists will never stop.
Pro-abortionists will never stop.
Satan will never stop.
It’s up to the good people to VOTE for good and moral politicians – so they will appoint good and moral judges.
Take the time to study all of your candidates well, and pray.
Oh and don’t forget MARYland and Penn’s PHILADELPHIA named after the New Testament city. There’s also NEWARK(of the Covenant), there are several St.Marys and of course ST. LOUIS. I could continue but I think you get the idea. We WERE founded by Christians who fervently practiced their religion. (Oh and don’t forget the ST.LAWRENCE. I guess we could call it the Larry River)
Oh yes, Prof.Helen McCaffrey, in football they would not be able to call a desperation pass a Hail Mary pass.
Recently Nebraska scientists named a newly discovered fresh water micro organism for my family name, although they did not affix “St.” in front of it.
If it wasn’t for the Catholics, where would this country be? How many secular hospitals were around during the Civil War? None! It is so sad that the students cannot learn about the TRUE history of this once great country, but, as they are being fed so much propaganda and plain lies: evolution, global warming, how to have sex and what to do if the girl gets pregnant and how to hide any STDs, etc.. How many of our kids even know the birth dates of Washington and Lincoln? Forget about Obama, as he doesn’t even know where he was born. This country is rich in Catholic History starting with Christopher Columbus, of which, the frauds are still trying to pervert him and what he did. Masses on the ships, Masses on the Islands, etc.. The so-called ACLU is not even American as the U.S.S.R. helped to fund them back in the 40’s. +JMJ+
There are plenty of other states with cities named after elements
of the faith as well: the oldest state capitol in the country comes to mind
and other locations in New Mexico too, Santa Fe and Las Cruces for
starters.
So much for the significant history of Los Angeles…..next fight—change “Los Angeles” to something that doesn’t imply the existence Angels. How about Los Smogos……or Los ACLUS, or Los Anarchists?
The county and city should have accepted the lawsuit and fought it.
You’ll notice the Politically Correct crowd also removed the upper right section depicting oil wells from the Los Angeles County seal. Apparently oil is also offensive to their delicate sensibilities, though the petroleum industry was and is very important to the economic base of Los Angeles. But to see the pointless hanging rock at the L.A. County Museum of Art, they still have to pass by La Brea Tar Pits and be reminded of all that dirty, evil (naturally occurring) oil at the surface. Another example of their Orwellian efforts to remake history.
I recall the vivid oil tank fires that would … well, fire up … every few years south of Los Angeles. We’d see the flames from fifteen miles away.
I still DON’T like the new seal:
Cattle–I’m vegan & cows produce too many carbon emmissions
Big Fish: Is that an endangered species on the seal? If so, which one? Fish also carry mercury poisoning!
Early Explorer Sea Vessel–there came and mistreated Native Americans & forced their culture on natives, too.
The whole seal has to go!
(When will this madness end??)
Cath. Joe, actually livestock do not produce enough carbon emissions. Remember that the more carbon emissions, the more available fuel for transportation and industry. How would you have managed settling the New World? And if you’re so kind to animals, then why are you advocating getting rid of seals?
“The whole seal has to go!”
JOE, even the baby seal?
The original name of Los Angeles was Nuestra Senora Reina de los Angeles. The city seal had the rosary encircling it. Hundreds of cities, towns, mountains and rivers in the US are named after saints.
Many counties throughout the United States bear a Catholic origin, either on account of being named after a saint, our Lady, or some mystery of the Faith. Check it out here https://catholicism.org/us-counties-named-after-catholics.html
And there are towns named after Protestant “saints” too. Five cities in the US testify to the rather strange anomaly: St. Paul, Texas, is named after W.H. Paul; St. James, Missouri, is named after Thomas James; St. Thomas, Pennsylvania, is named after Thomas Campbell; St. Joe, Texas, is named after Joe Howell; and Saint Michael, Nebraska, is named after Mike Kyne. Catholics are not totally innocent in this regard: Saint Edward, Nebraska, is named after the uncanonized Catholic priest, Edward Serrels.
