The following comes from a May 26 Crisis Magazine article by Nicholas Senz:
The dispute between Catholic high school teachers and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone continues. Jim McGarry, an organizer of the group Concerned Parents and Students, has written an open letter addressed “to the administrators at the Catholic High Schools in the San Francisco Archdiocese” which was published in the National Catholic Reporter.
The letter is dotted with the same language we have seen heretofore: Archbishop Cordileone is using a “rhetoric of judgment and selectivity” to enact “the imposition of contested teachings” which will allegedly “lethally damage our students, our teachers, our schools, and our mission.” After calling the assertion that the archbishop is authentically representing Catholic teaching “incorrect,” Mr. McGarry states: “Our opposition to the Archbishop’s language comes from inside, indeed from the very core of the Catholic tradition.” And it is here that Mr. McGarry makes an incredible leap: the teachers’ position represents not dissent, by development of doctrine.
Mr. McGarry asserts that in the Church now such a development is taking place in the changing attitudes of some toward homosexual acts, and that this change must take place through a dialogue: “Church teaching does not occur by fiat, but by argument,” he writes. Yet though Mr. McGarry claims he wants dialogue and argument, he presents no arguments for his position, but merely declares it to be the case that homosexual acts ought to be accepted as morally legitimate.
The author claims there is an internal contradiction within the Catechism, alleging that the document’s assertions both that homosexual acts are disordered and that homosexual persons ought not to be discriminated against is incoherent, and thus that “the true teaching of the church must emerge from the tension inherent in these two paragraphs and that is what is happening now.” Mr. McGarry considers it incoherent that one would distinguish between one’s attitude toward a person’s actions and one’s attitude toward that person as a person, a view all too frequently encountered in society today and indeed one of the main arguments that proponents of same-sex “marriage” employ: “How can you say you love me if you don’t approve of what I do?” The divide between love and approval is created by the realities of human nature: there are some actions that are not good for human beings to do and that do not lead to their flourishing and fulfillment; and when we see others doing such actions, it is precisely our love for them, our desire for their fulfillment, that causes us to disapprove of those actions. Our love for others both creates this distinction and makes it coherent.
Yet Mr. McGarry presses on with his claim of doctrinal development in our midst, and the example for the sort of development he has in mind is the issue of slavery. McGarry, citing a book by Judge John Noonan, recounts the story of a report given by Vatican officials to Pope Pius VII advising him not to speak against the practice of slavery for political reasons. Here is implied a series of tendentious arguments: that the silence of Pius VII amounted to an endorsement of slavery; that this constituted the official magisterial teaching of the Church on the issue; and that the Church’s subsequent condemnation of slavery amounts to a reversal of previously established Church teaching—precisely the sort of “development” McGarry would like to see. If this were an accurate recounting of events, Mr. McGarry would have a strong case.
But it is not, and there is no analogue to the question of homosexual relationships. Even if we take the strongest argument and point to a few early modern popes who issued documents allowing for the slave trade by the Portuguese and Spanish in aid of their attempts to defend Christian Europe from the Ottoman Turks (certainly a scandalous action), such allowances could not be said to be constitutive of definitive Church teaching on slavery, neither as exercises of papal infallibility nor as representative of universal and consistent Church teaching; yet there have been such consistent condemnations of homosexual acts throughout the Church’s history.
Mr. McGarry is representative of a type increasingly seen in recent years: the self-defined Catholic. These are the sort who see Catholic identity as a tribal designation as opposed to being rooted in a relationship with God in Jesus Christ through his Church and holding to certain beliefs about him. For these, what makes one a Catholic is being born into it, and thus “what Catholics believe” because transformed from “the beliefs that constitute one’s being Catholic” to “the beliefs that those who call themselves Catholic happen to hold.” Under this latter understanding, Church teaching would indeed “happen by argument,” or more likely, as Mr. McGarry’s actions betray, by emotional appeals and peer pressure tactics to “not be a hater,” “be on the right side of history,” and so on, and to hope for a pope who would change Church teaching—by fiat, naturally—to fit their views. This is not the Catholic faith, and it is not heading that way.
Well, Jim McGarry has a point. The Church, increasingly in its Vatican II implementation, has turned its “Happy Face” to the modern world, and sought to obtain agreement from the populace, a practice which has never, ever worked for the Church.
Many Catholics throughout history have struggled, as the Apostles struggled, to understand the Gospel, and to live according to the Ten Commandments and to Church teachings and doctrine. The notion of popularity and having sinful Mankind actually be asked to assent to the Church’s teaching is wrong and very bad theology.
The Church is a monarchy, as the Triune God is a Monarchy over creation. No other form works, although many in the Church feel that now is the time to break up the…
St. Christopher I agree! Asking the ignorant populace their opinions,” is CRAZY!! Instead– it is the responsibility of the Church, to lead us all, following God, our Divine Creator and Ruler! YES– the Church is ruled by God, by a Divine Principle, which runs every aspect of life, and of the entire universe– in an exact way, a sort of “Monarchy,” because it is exact, and of Divine Design, and Divine Intelligence!! One is a FOOL, to deny the True God, the Blessed Trinity, so HOLY– and to create one’s own “god,” and worship these “false gods,” the way one desires!! Totally ridiculous!!
(Continued) No idea what happened here!
The point of the blog is two-fold: (1) the Catholic Church is, and should always be, monarchical; and (2) many, particularly the Germans, do not like this model and want it changed.
McGarry is among many in the USA that want to make up their own church. They use some from their faith-tradition, some from People magazine, some from Oprah and Dr. Phil, and some from “common sense”. Yet, they forget that the Faith does not come from Mankind but from Christ (meaning God). In this way it is non-linear from Mankind’s thinking. As a recent article reminded us, this warning was provided far earlier: “But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according…
Here is the full biblical quote: “But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ,” (Gal. 1:6-12)
I believe there is now a word limit to our posts. I remember reading it somewhere here a few weeks ago. Apparently there is no warning, so keep it short and pithy!
If McCarty is citing [former 9th Circuit Court Justice] John Noonan accurately (probably not), he (McGarry) is a fool: Pope Pius VII (papacy 1800-1823) was one of the most saintly and courageous popes (his beatification process was started by Benedict XVI in 2007), who in fact called for an end to slavery (Congress of Vienna, 1815), as well as being renowned also for preserving the pontificate against his implacable enemy, Napoleon, who imprisoned him for a time.
It was Nicolas V who issued the bulls Dum Diversas (1452) and Romanus Pontifex (1455), two declarations that some say appeared to authorize the Portuguese to capture and keep slaves in their naval war with Muslim states.
But who cares about facts, names,…
And, down with ‘autocorrect’ (McCarty v. McGarry)..
This appeared in the National Catholic Reporter…….NEED I SAY MORE!!!
A rag for sure.
The only thing that concerns Mr. McGarry is to bring down the Archbishop with his agenda.
And as far as the Church’s doctrine on homosexuality, it’s because the Church LOVES everyone, including Homosexuals, that is why the Church has spoken up in the Catechism…… because the Church wants EVERYONE to go to Heaven. Speaking up….. that is true charity and TRUE LOVE!!!
We Catholics are to Love and Respect all homosexuals….BUT NEVER CONDONE!!!!
I clicked on the link and found the link to the letter.
I disagree with the letter but there were some interesting things in it.
According to the letter (unverified):
‘Each school administration wrote a letter to their constituents as this controversy hit the classrooms and the streets of our city this past February…These letters, particularly aimed at parents, implied that all things will work out in time and nothing that you love about your school will change. The suggestion is that we will weather this storm by being who we are.”
Also in the letter (unverified):
“The parents of schools in the Oakland Diocese were reassured at this time last year. They were misled. The contract language forced on the school communities was a mortal wound. Not only were good and faithful teachers let go, but scores of educators felt compelled to violate their consciences to hold onto their jobs and take care of their families.”
But note how little uproar there was in Oakland–a diocese that’s certainly as liberal as the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Bishop of Oakland shuns the spotlight and the media–things were done quietly and everyone moves on. But in San Francisco both pro and con forces absolutely crave media attention.
Um, who were the first to buy and ad in the paper because the Holy Father or Papal Nuncio doesn’t immediately respond to them?
Who owns the SF media?
The Archbishop has enjoyed the media limelight long before he arrived in San Francisco, as I’m sure you know and he could stand to take more than a few tactical pointers from Bp. Barber. Being a high-profile culture warrior may make you famous, but it’s not really good for affecting change, as a comparison between the two bishops clearly shows.
So I think the Oakland bishop did not attempt to introduce a very one sided moral theology into the teacher’s handbook the way Cordileone did in San Francisco. If he hadn’t made such an egregious mistake, it’s likely he would not have awakened the tiger, so to speak, and might have been able to sneak changes in over time. Judge for yourselves whether ABC did the right thing strategically. Also, the teachers in SF now know that the “no-witchhunt” idea didn’t work out so well for a number of teachers who were either fired or made to feel that there was no room for them in their schools.
OK, “Anonymous” so what?
These people are committing a fraud anyway by teaching in a Catholic school, and then acting as if it is fine to oppose its teachings. They have no “right” to anything, by the way.
Teachers are lucky to have these kinds of jobs. If they are offended by the Church’s doctrines, then find some other place to work. Pretty simple.
St. Christopher, I posted things I thought would be of interest to CCD readers. I did not verify them. I do not agree with the letter. I agree with you.
This article sheds much light on why there is so much hate and intolerance coming from contemporary liberalism. Reason: they can’t differentiate the “sin” from the “sinner.” Therefore, if they hate Christian beliefs, they must also hate Christians. Furthermore, it also explains why they unjustly brand Christians as haters. Reason: they project their own distasteful hate onto their Christian opponents.
The solution is certainly the light of Christ, Love.
Steve, who branded the Archbishop a “hater”?
You won’t find that anywhere in this article, in the letter that it references, or in any coming material from the teachers or parents.
YFC, we know how the Left operates, label a person a “hater” and then try to destroy them…
Amazing, 4 days later and neither you, Canisius, nor you Steve, can point to a place where the principles in the article called anyone a “hater”. Make things up, you do!
A Sins is A SIN! It is like a Dog is a Dog no matter what kind. Sodomy is a Mortal Sin! Those who are promoting it sin Double! In Hell there is neither light nor warmth. because, God alone give Light and Warmth. That is when we die, our body turns cold ~ lifeless; God left! The body enters the earth, the soul departs for its judgement. Heaven, hell or purgatory? Mortal = forever death for the soul t enters Hell. “He who is not with me is against me!” “Heaven will pass away, earth will pass away, my words will not pass away!” He is the author of Life. He suffered and died for our SOUL’S SAKE! He is the Final Word!I The best of Luck to all who dare to challenge the Power of the King of kings and Lord of lords! Amen!
Awesome comments The Seeker. Love your convictions in the Lord. Praise be Jesus Christ.
The bishops aren’t going far enough. They need to ban fat teachers too, because of their refusal to turn away from the sin of gluttony.
I also think CCD should ask all of us to reveal our BMI’s, and those posters who are lost in sin should be banned from posting until they show conformity to God’s will.
This is truer than you know.

Can you say “sin”. The conversation between the great Archbishop and the pot stirrers should be closed. There is nothing further to discuss. Archbishop has been so very gracious. The teachings of the Church are what they are. No nuance’s or attempts to re-write them can change that. If these people don’t like or agree with the teachings of Jesus Christ why would they send their kids to school there? Why aren’t they boycotting and fighting what Muslim’s teach regarding their lifestyle choices? These folks really need to get a life and seek out a school which teaches what they believe and leave us Catholics and our Catholic schools alone. Alas, this is the example of the intolerance of the so called tolerant. Obviously and…
This is what happens when the former BAD Bishops of SFO did not require all Diocese employees to read and adhere to the CCC.
The current Abp has to bring things back to the true Faith which is contained in the Bible and CCC.
There is no such thing as a “self-defined” Catholic.
There are Faithful Catholics, and Catholic heretics.
Many denominations exist that espouse the beliefs of these protesters. The Anglicans/Episcopalians would welcome them with open arms. I simply don’t understand why these protesters wish to identify themselves as Catholic when they don’t accept the Truth of the teachings of the Church. Why would they expect the 2000+ year old Church to conform to “their beliefs”? This is arrogance to the max!
Their letter to the Pope, posted in the local news rag, and now their “open letters” are making themselves look like fools.
But, Peggy, they consider themselves part of a “tribe” of “self defined” Catholics and thus, feel that they can’t leave. The last paragraph of the piece from Crisis and reprinted above is masterful in explaining the situation. It is, of course, best that these tribal folk, these “cultural Catholics”, come to understand the relationship and responsibility of the Church to Jesus Christ and, relating properly, follow that model for their own relationship with Christ. If they cannot do this, then much better would be the “smaller Church” that Benedict predicted.
The response from Cal-Catholic was a well reasoned and entirely valid deconstruction of the tissue of lies and (dare we say it) Hate for the Church, its Teachings and the Faithful – that has epitomized the Gaystapo ‘leadership’ seeking to infiltrate and subvert the Church in to another funding / Indoctrination source for said Gaystapo agenda of ‘fundamental transformation’.
I didn’t see it mentioned, so I ask if McGary has any directions for the Rest of the Faithful Catholics Loyal to the Church, Pope, Arch-Bishop… to go to Worship according to the Catholic Faith; after of course they have looted the Church unds donated by the Faithful to indulge the Anti-Catholic tantrum theater various Twysted Systers of Indulgence and their…
The Center for Disease Control reports that 75% to 85% of the following diseases in the United States are caused by Homosexual behavior and acts: STD, HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Hepatitis A, B, and C; Chlamydia of the rectum, Chlamydia of the penis; Gonorrehea of the rectum, Gnorrehea of the penis, Genital Herpes, Rectal Herpes; Human Papillomavirus, Primary/Secondary Syphillis, Occular Syphillis and Occular Gonorrehea; Genital and Anal Warts; Oral and Rectal cancer; Throat cancer, gonorrehea and syphillis; GAY BOWL SYNDROME. I am confused! We should have respect, compassion, and sensitivity for this type of Homosexual acts and behavior?
Absolutely excellent analysis and question, “Innominato”. Why, indeed?
What homosexuals voluntarily do to their bodies crushes the spirit, and drives out God’s graces. Their sexual license is so perverse, that theologians say that the very demons that led them to this sin, move away when it is performed; they are angels, after all, and understand the perversity of Man’s human nature that does this. Depravity does not warrant “respect” or “compassion”.
Pere Teilhard de Chardin’s new religion within the Church had an enormous influence on Vatican II, both before and after. This rebellion is but another facet of his ongoing new revelation. Many in the Church need an exorcism.
Thank you for posting that, Innominato. In doing so you might have saved some lives in more ways than one. I certainly hope so.
Funny, I thought those diseases were caused by viruses and bacteria. Perhaps you should read up on Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister. Really good folks from the third century past. Still good reading! And “germ theory” dating from the 16th century.
Folks, religion has tried to claim that disease is the result of sin for a very very long time. Jesus himself asked of a blind man, “Who sinned, this man or his parents?” The answer was, obviously, neither. Yet the blind man saw, saw, the truth that Jesus was conveying. We all sin, and the command “Go and sin no more” was for all the rest of us, not for this blind man.
YFC—- are you living in a dream world? Of course the diseases mentioned were caused by bacteria and viruses. But if the CDC’s estimates are to be believed, 75-85% of the time those bacteria and viruses were deposited in the victims’ bodies by homosexual acts. Certainly—given your intelligence—you understand that. Why be disingenuous?
Where is the link?
YFC,
Are you being deliberately obtuse? Homosexual behaviour both causes and transmits these disgusting and life-threatening diseases. They are “life-Style” diseases. That they are the result of sin certainly goes without saying, if you do not practice homosexual sex, your chances of contracting these diseases is virtually nil. Homosexual sex is self-destructive, dangerous both to the homosexual and anyone that he/she comes into sexual contact with. All these facts are known, but Satan has a hold on these individuals and blinds them to the truths of both medicine and of Holy Church. In many cases, a miserable death and afterlife awaits them.
HM … I’ve got to say that a good number of my straight women friends over the years have shared with me they have gotten herpies and a few other nasty bugs. BTW the group which has the lowest risk of AIDS is…lesbians.
I’m being neither, hosemonkey.
First off, the factors that enter into the transmission of disease are not indicative of their moral value. BREATHING transmits many diseases. SNEEZING transmits many others. Both are involuntary reactions to living and being. TRANSMITTING a disease is very different than CAUSING a disease. Or do you think that breathing should be stamped out because it transmits the flu?
YFC,
One MUST breathe in order to sustain life. One does NOT have to use another man’s digestive tract for sexual gratification. We MUST breathe in order to live, we have no choice. We do have a choice not to practice perverted and dangerous sex.
“Perhaps you should read up on Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister.” = Nothing “funny” about being sent to hell. Perhaps YFC and the anti-Cordileone protesters should read up on the terrifying vision of hell that was shown to the children at Fatima. Plenty of eternal protesting there.

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great…
“We should have respect, compassion, and sensitivity for this type of Homosexual acts and behavior?”
Never – These are Damaged People and we should have compassion for their Plight – Not ‘celebrate’ their Behaviors as those attacking the Arch-Bishop want.
When have you ever shown compassion for gay people? Give just one example, please!
Michael McDermott has a son or sons whom he wants to protect from this type of behavior as he knows the damage it does to the person both physically and spiritually. That is what a good father does. I do not blame him for being more concerned about the seduction of boys than for those who push the homosexual agenda.
“When have you ever shown compassion for gay people? Give just one example, please! ”
Anonymous, Give just one example where you used a recognized name so that your consistent idea of compassion can be clarified as faithfully compassionate to agendas or faithfully compassionate to Christ and “all” Church teaching. IOW you’re still hiding something!
Compassionate Catholicism does not hide like an scrambling insect under a dark anonymous rock. Shine a light of name recognition consistency and we’ll soon see which master you are “compassionately” serving.
Michael McDermott has previously said that he never found a wife. Where does he ever say he has “a son or sons”? So is it a son, or multiple sons? Or did you just make that up altogether? And the notion that sons need to be “protected” from gay people is ridiculous. Maybe he should protect his daughter or daughters from the Duggars. And you still didn’t answer Anony’s question, which is when did McDermott ever show compassion towards gay people, her question wasn’t about his son or sons or daughter or daughters. He hasn’t given a response, and neither did you.
It seems to me that Michael posted before that he had male children or a son. I could be wrong.
They are many types of seduction, you who call yourself YFC. Just encouraging a young person into that type of behavior and not telling them the truth about what can happen to them is a type of seduction. You will not admit that such behavior can and does eventually destroy the body because you are making excuses for your own bad behavior.
Michael shows compassion when he tells the truth about what sodomy does to people, and so do the rest of us. You answer with lies to excuse your behavior as you have admitted living with a man whom you wish to “marry” (an oxymoron if there ever was one.)
The homosexual agenda trolls have freely chosen to promote and support deadly Mortal sin.
CCC – Second Edition # 1855 – “Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him.”
In regards to this article Michael is correct to say never. I dont want teachers or anyone to undermine my values nor indoctrinate my family in views that go against God and what dishonors him. We draw the line, we set healthy respectful boundaries and by that, it helps those who are pro-gay agendas, know that God is the authority and we ought to obey him and not tell Him and His church to do what mankind wills for himself. We know that when mankind chooses to live by his rules alone, that eventually mankind will destroy itself. Loving homosexuals means not giving them what they want, but truly loving them with dignity and compassion is giving them only the truth and what God commands through His church and natural law.

Direct, Lord, their counsel, following what is pleasing and acceptable in your sight, so that by exercising with devotion and in peace and gentleness the power that…
One can be a Catholic in name only (CINO) but it doesn’t fool God. It doesn’t even fool us.
