At an outdoor rosary rally and Mass held Oct. 3, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone encouraged Catholics to renew their respect and devotion to the Eucharist as indoor Masses resume across the city.
“Have we accepted this fast from the Eucharist as an opportunity God has given us to renew our devotion and love for the sacrament?” Cordileone said during his homily at the rally outside the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption.
The office of San Francisco’s mayor announced Sept. 29 that places of worship will be permitted to hold services indoors at 25% capacity, up to 100 people, beginning Sept. 30.
The city had been allowing only one worshipper at a time in places of worship, regardless of the building’s size, while allowing multiple patrons in other indoor establishments. Parishes in San Francisco had been adapting to the restrictions by holding multiple concurrent, outdoor Masses each Sunday.
The Oct. 3 annual rosary rally began at St. Anthony of Padua Church in the city’s mission district with a procession to the cathedral.
Cordileone urged Catholics to prepare for receiving Communion by frequently going to confession, praying and attending Eucharistic adoration, CatholicSF reported. Worshippers should be prayerfully silent whenever they are in the presence of the Eucharist and should dress properly for Mass, Cordileone said.
At the rosary rally, five families were selected to pray each decade in a different language: English, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Latin.
At the end of the rosary, Archbishop Cordileone renewed the archdiocese’s consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was first done in 2017, CatholicSF reported.
Cordileone also encouraged Catholics to participate in a national virtual rosary, to be led by Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles Oct. 7, on the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

I was there, with about 900 other people with the demand to “Free the Mass”. It was a multi-cultural crowd with one purpose in mind, to worship as the Constitution provides, freely. Beautiful to join Christ centered people responding as truly Peaceful Protestors, to outrageous government overreach. And since this is a political issue, my “Trump 2020” mask was on full display. You’re welcome San Francisco!
Again with renewing the consecrations. Would someone please provide concrete evidence of what effect has resulted from that? Why does it have to be renewed? I never even heard about consecrations until like five years ago. Now it’s all the rage. Is it like a subscription that expires? My diocese has been consecrated to Mary, to Divine Mercy, to St. Joseph. What for? I haven’t seen any difference. And if they do any good, then why not go all in and consecrate to the Holy Spirit and to the Father and to the Trinity and to St. Michael and to all the saints as well?
St Monica prayed for her son, the future St Augustine, for about 30 years before he converted. After one year — didn’t see any difference. After two years — didn’t see any difference. After three years didn’t see . . . well, you get the idea. Sometimes it takes 30 years.
Admitting you are an uninformed Catholic is a step in the right direction. If consecrations were completely unknown to you until 5 years ago, surely there are many other areas of ignorance you need to address, so stop posting and get reading.
I bet this comment comes from a trad. I can sense the arrogant attitude, which was not Christ’s attitude. Why don’t you take a poll of Catholics outside any California parish after Mass and see how many have heard of consecrations? It was never a part of my education, and I attended Catholic schooling from first grade through college, all in Southern California.
Your parents should demand a refund for the shoddy Catholic education you got. You, like Kevin T, are an uninformed Catholic so the advice is the same, get reading. And you lost your bet.
Spiritual battles are real. If the Vatican would publicly repent of (and pray appropriate prayers of deliverance for) the Pachamama idolatry that took place there, that would help. We know Who wins the war. But, in the meantime, spiritual casualties are real.
I hope they were careful not to step into anything messy.
