The San Bernardino Catholic Diocese plans to release the names of every priest who has been credibly accused of sexually abusing children over 40 years.
Diocese spokesman John Andrews said Tuesday that the list will be published on the diocese’s website within two weeks.
The disclosure will be among the latest made or planned by dioceses around the country, including in San Diego, which last week added eight names to its list of accused priest abusers.
The Diocese of San Jose also plans to release the names of alleged predators by mid-October.
The current wave of disclosures follows a Pennsylvania grand jury report released last month detailing allegations that Pittsburgh-area priests had molested more than 1,000 children.
After that, San Bernardino Bishop Gerald Barnes called a meeting with diocese priests, deacons, religious sisters and others in the community.
“He wanted to talk about what the diocese can do locally to address the genuine angst and disappointment that have come with the release of that report … ,” Andrews said in an interview with KPCC/LAist.
Among the top suggestions from the meeting: publicize a comprehensive list of accused priests.

So, Bishop Barnes, when can we expect the USCCB to release the name of every Bishop, Archbishop and Cardinal in the US who has been credibly accused of sexual abuse? The issue is no longer priests having behaved badly. The issue is those members of the hierarchy who have spread their perversion throughout numerous dioceses and archdioceses in the US and elsewhere.
Excellent, Xavier!!
Since homosex with a young male or even with any man is at least 80% of the abuse among priests and bishops, only less than 20% of the abuses will be addressed by Bishop Barnes.
Remember Msgr Peter Covas of San Bernardino? He was high up as financial director. He was caught twice by police masturbating at a sex/porn club. Covas also had a longtime male sex partner and together they owned a gay motel in Palm Springs, the Palm Canyon Inn. When Covas died, he was given a jazz-band Requiem Mass at the Cathedral with Bishop Barnes and many priests in attendance—all there to laud Covas! Doesn’t this say it all?
I find it interesting that those bishops in California who seem most likely of being part of the lavender mafia are also the ones who seem to be trying the most to get ahead of this issue.
I admit that I’m placing them in a “damned if you do/damned if you don’t” situation. My intent is only to make an observation for future reference.
Get ahead of it? They’re way behind and doing damage control.
Anonymous,
It is a type of damage control. In this case, I think they’re trying to avert future damage to themselves.
