Baja California’s Congress has widely approved same-sex marriage after attempts in 2020 and 2019.
The huge win for the LGBTQ+ community in Baja California comes during Pride month and was made possible by politicians that are part of Mexico’s National Regeneration Movement party MORENA.
“It’s clear that people in Baja are not opposed to this,” said MORENISTA Delegate Juan Manuel Molina. “On June 6th, voters voted for us and they knew the stance of our candidates on this topic; human rights are not to be questioned nor disputed.”
The reform faced several opposition votes, two from the only National Action Party (PAN) delegates Loreto Quintero Quintero and Eva Maria Maria Vasquez (who also ran in Mexicali’s mayor race) as well as Efren Moreno Rivera of the Green Party (PVEM) and Victor Manuel Moran Hernandez (MORENA).
The vote comes a day after the Mexican state of Sinaloa also approved a similar measure that made access to marriage a human right as well as adjusting what is defined as a marriage under the eye of the law.
The measure now has to be approved by 3 of the 5 local governments in Baja California.
Prior to the reform, Article 7 of Article 143 of the Civil Code defined marriage as “a right for society” as a union “between a man with a woman.” That definition has now been stricken from state law.
Article 143 will now read that marriage in Baja California is the ‘free union between two persons’ where they will be joint and have ‘ respect, equality and mutual aid’ for each other.
The journey to get here has also faced criticism and opposition from the public accompanied by members of the Catholic Church.
Advocates for same-sex marriage in Baja California will now be pushing for even more states to legalize it, their next stop: Yucatan. Groups like All Out in Latin America will fight until same-sex marriage is legal in all 32 states.
The above comes from a June 16 story on Kyma.com (Yuma, Arizona TV)
I know it is against God’s law. But let them be, as long as they don’t flaunt it. I don’t know a thing about Mexican personal taxes. But I wonder if they can file joint returns as can same sex couples in the USA.
First it was civil unions, next they couldn’t get sodomite marriages through the states (most states rejected it) so they brought it to the courts and it was legalized. Next they started infiltrating the schools and businesses and churches with homosexual propaganda and under the cover of darkness as we see now, propagandized our society into this abomination compelling everyone to accept it, and not only that, but forcing them to embrace it too. And let’s not forget the conversion therapy bans. If it doesn’t work why are they so bent on stopping it? We’re not idiots. If you think this is the end. Look at the cake maker who they are after again. The Devil may have his hour but God will have His day. You choose.
“. . . marriage in Baja California is the ‘free union between two persons’ . . .”
OK, so, why 2? If sexes of the parties do not matter, why does number? Sounds a bit arbitrary. Some enterprising Mormon fundamentalist or Muslim ought to get on this.
And why is this on Catholic website and with this wording “finally wins’ as if it’s a good thing?
Xenia,it’s on this website because the catholic church i southern california is very much connect to the baja dioceses
the use of ” finally could indeed reflect a positive statement in some instances but can also reflect a negative as in, ” we played as hard as we could but they proved they were a better team and finally beat us in the last inning. finall here is used observationally, noting that the disordered inclinations supporters broke through the defense line of God’s people. no approval there, just loss by attrition.but the story isn’t over yet.
The Catholic side did not play as hard as it could, and did not lose to a better team. Xenia is right because legalization of same sex “marriage” is not a win. Baja California has voted evil upon itself.
Another defeat for God. Another defeat for the Church. Would be nice if God did something powerful to show being a faithful Catholic isn’t a waste of a life. Seems that all the Church and Catholics do is lose.

Our Father complains: “I was ready to respond to those who asked Me not, to be found by those who sought Me not. I said: Here I am! Here I am! To a nation that did not call My Name” (Is 65:1).
Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a Christian, that’s a tough call. That’s rebellion. Alice Cooper

Where is the honor of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe? I am so sorry for all the good Mexican families of Baja CA It takes lots of maturity, and manly strength, guts, morality, and pride in your culture, to maintain a firm hand on morality, in any country. Never weak, immature, “bleeding heart liberals,” for those who desire to lead sinful lives. Strong churches– especially ours– would deeply inculcate Christian Morality, and this garbage would never be thought of. I just read that Disney+ is having a huge “gay pride” gala, with lots of filthy, perverted drag queens and “gay-modified” traditional Disney songs and characters. Wish Disney would get bought and reformed totally, morally, back to its original concept, by a dedicated Christian group.
It is so tragic to see Mexico and many Latin American countries wrecking their beautiful cultures with sinful, exported “American Hippie Filth.”
Christianity was exported there too. Shall they return to Inca and Aztec religion?
Satan must be conquered by Christ. No more brutal, pagan Aztec and Inca religious practices. Annihilate anti-Christian, Satanic “American Hippie Filth.” Christianity is a great gift to Mexico and to all of Latin America. Christ and Our Blessed Mother– Our Lady of Guadalupe– are tremendous gifts. Viva Cristo Rey. Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe. (Cry of the Cristeros)
Why is my original punctuation– with some exclamation points– always changed? What is wrong, for example, with “Viva Cristo Rey!” — with correct exclamation points? Must it look “dead”– with a period at the end?? No feelings expressed at all?
Why don’t you fix your own country (America) so that it doesn’t export filth then?
Anonymous, you must be an American– great that you want to fix America!
The last time I looked, there were two states in Baja California those being Norte and Sud. Since Mexicali was mentioned in the article, I will presume it is the northern Baja state, not the southern one that passed this garbage. The author needs to take a class in Mexican states.
Xavier, you are wrong. Baja California — even in Mexico — is accepted as the correct way to refer to the more northerly state. “Baja California Norte” is no longer used, not even by the state government. Baja California Sur, however, is still used to identify the more southerly state. So it’s Baja California and Baja California Sur. It is you, not the author, who needs to take a class.
