Saturday Night Live (SNL)’s Cecily Strong appeared on the show as a clown named Goober to attack pro-life legislation in Texas, stating, “I know I wouldn’t be a clown on TV here today if it weren’t for the abortion I had.”
“Here’s my truth. I know I wouldn’t be a clown on TV here today if it weren’t for the abortion I had the day before my 23rd birthday,” Strong’s character said during a “Weekend Update” segment, suggesting that women are better off terminating the lives of their own unborn children so that they can go on to play the role of a clown later on in life.
“Clowns have been helping each other and their pregnancies since the caves. It’s going to happen, so it oughta be safe, legal, and accessible,” Strong continued, using “clowns” as a synonym for “women.”
Strong was reacting to the recently enacted pro-life law in Texas, which bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, when a fetal heartbeat is detected.
“I had an abortion the day before my 23rd birthday!” Strong’s character proclaimed near the beginning of her skit, to which SNL host Colin Jost said, “It seems like you do want to talk about your abortion.”
“Well, actually, I really don’t, but people keep bringing it up, so I gotta keep talking about freaking abortion,” she replied. “But it’s a rough subject, so we’re gonna do fun clown stuff to make it more palatable. Wee! Hey, who wants a balloon animal?”
While attempting to make a balloon animal, Strong’s character continued: “I wish I didn’t have to [talk about] this, because the abortion I had at 23 is my personal clown business. But that’s all some people in this country want to discuss — even though clown abortion was legalized in 1973 in Clown v. Wade.”

SNL…”Sorry, Not Laughing”…Been not funny for over 35 years but services the ‘Narrative’ so…it’s still on the air….do people still watch that? Sort of like the Shriner’s Circus where they have tickets but they just give them to anyone that will take them when they don’t sell enough of what they have…
Do people really still watch SNL? Masochists, I guess.
I watched the piece. It is very sad. Eternal rest grant unto her baby, O Lord and all the babies of all the women who have had abortions. May God grant them Light and a place of Peace with Him in Heaven.
Cecily Strong is a great talent and I feel sure that the Lord would have blessed her and given her a life that she would have enjoyed with the baby. Lots of comedians-male and female- have children.
meanwhile, she’s not suffering on account of the abortion. God seems uninvolved one way or the other
Look at her eyes.
Your God is not involved comment struck me. I’ve been feeling the same. It’s like I’m losing faith that God is there at all.
Yes, He is here. When those who abort are sorry, He will envelop them in His Mercy. Jesus is the Savior He saves us from our sins and the punishment we deserve for them.
Feeling the same, say an Act of Faith. Say the Creed. Say the Our Father. Say your Guardian Angel prayer. Say the Come Holy Spirit. If you find yourself doubting, go back to the beginning and repeat.
This is the world of woe, the vale of tears.
Pray to Mary. Consecrate yourself to her Immaculate Heart.
Pray the Psalms. Start with Psalm 1 then 2.
I have heard other entertainers say that: “I would not be where I am today if I had not had that abortion.” What a terrible indictment of that industry.
This is worse than Me Too.
I know other women who went through college and finally landed their dream job and got pregnant and they were fine. They got parental leave. Their parents moved near them to help Or they found a day care. I guess day care is not open on Saturday Nights but lots of musicians have travelled with their kids and the kids hang out back stage and roadies ride them around on equipment cases.
Please never kill your baby for a job.
February 7, 2007.
Baby would be 13-14 years old.
Cecily the actress is not saying she had an abortion, it’s a skit. She’s acting (regardless of whether we find it funny).
At one point, Jost appeared to break character by saying, “You don’t have to do this, Cecily.” To which Strong replied, without missing a beat, “Who’s Cecily? I’m Goober.”
She’s childless and unmarried. She’s 37 years old. She’s a Democrat. You reach your own conclusion.
Childless and unmarried at 37. Conclusion is she has been faithful to Catholic teaching.
she’s not Catholic
One, you don’t have to be Catholic to be faithful to Catholic teaching and two, she attended Catholic school so the presumption is she is Catholic. How do you know she’s not? Or do you just want to get into a stupid internet argument that goes nowhere?
No, she only attended a Catholic high school for about a year after transferring there from another school where she got kicked out for possessing marijuana. After about a year at the Catholic high school she transferred to a performing arts academy for her senior year and graduated from that academy.
I’m interested in people posting the truth.
She has verified that it is her own personal story on her IG.
She attended a Catholic school during part of her sophomore year of high school.
There is no info online that says she is Catholic,
Good point. But I still didn’t think it was funny or even intended to be funny when I saw it live. I thought it was intended purely as a political statement. Comedy including SNL can be used to make political statements, but at least they try to be funny.
Squirting Jost is always funny-its a long running gag on the Weekend Update. If she had kept dousing him, instead of going to other clown tricks, it would have gotten a lot of laughs.
But maybe that was not what they wanted.
Michael Che confirmed on The View that it is her story.
When asked why it had gone viral with over 100,000,000 views, he said ” I think it resonated because it is real. It is honest and it is kind of the best use of the show, like when performers that talented-Cecily is one of the funniest people I ever met- and when she is that good and is able to tell her story in that way, it’s what makes the show still interesting after 47 years.”
a child must die
so you can be a clown
Christe Eleison
Who’s Christe? I thought her name is Cecily.
Christ.
Is Christ’s last name Eleison?
No. and Jesus’ last name is not Christ.
Kyrie, Eleison. Lord, have mercy.
Christe, Eleison. Christ, have mercy.
Kyrie, Eleison. Lord, have mercy.
There are stress punctuation over the y in Kyrie and the second e in eleison but I don’t know how to type that on this keyboard.
Clowns are supposed to be funny, but Cecily’s version of a clown seems sad and dissipated.
Once again the evil one uses mass media to spread lies. I do not think any part of this sketch is funny. I agree we must pray for Cecily’s soul and change of heart, the soul of her unborn baby, and all those in the media, our political leaders, and all those who view abortion as “women’s health care.” Abortion is infanticide.
