Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 12:43 AM By anonymous I have a lifelong condition that might make some question my validity, whether I have a “life unworthy of life”. But when the Lord calls me to Himself on the last day and confers on me my secret name which He alone knows, I will soar above the pain and humiliation of my temporary, earthly condition. My mortal life is passing like the grass which sprouts today and is gone tomorrow. Who I will really become, He alone knows. The Lord will acquit me according to how faithful I have been fulfilling the conditions He laid down on me, according to His inscrutable will. Praised be His Holy Name. Thanks be to Him, for creating me just as He did. He refrains from preventing no evil but that He will bring unimaginably greater good out of it, if only we trust Him. Perhaps just that is the point of it all. |

She expresses the selfish of the modernist world divorced from the spiritual life. I’m amazed at Rick Santorum’s journey to the presidency. I like him … I never thought this country would let him make it this far. I am hopeful. I’m also trepidatious. What battles does the devil have planned lying ahead? The Santorum’s will need our prayers and sacrifices. Those of us who do know Catholicism know the victory of suffering and abandonment to God’s will. Shame on this author who pretends to care while saying Isabelka never should have been born. I find this woman ignorant and insensitive. Perhaps an argument could be made that she should not have been born to suffer inside her own selfish ignorance. Poor thing … Whose her mother? |
Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 6:09 AM By Talitha Kum I wish people would not identify themselves as a catholic when they share their observations with us about topics that they deem in need of the ‘finger quotations’ to demonstrate a kind of I am Catholic BUT I am not ( ). What aren’t you that Catholics are? Gullible? Blindly compliant? Incapable of having your own thought process? Are you self Identifying as Catholic to please familial opinion while simultaneously distancing yourself to please the “smart people”You can smudge the line in the sand all you want to, but the line of truth is indelible. It takes a lot more courage to dress and profess a fully Catholic life than it does to suit yourself. I think spiritual egoism is saying ‘yeah, but…’ to God! Either you believe that the Catholic faith is inspired by Holy Spirit and instituted by Jesus himself and passed along by apostolic secession or You Do Not! Choose the fullness of the Faith or leave it alone, please! Do not speak as a CINO in the public media about the my Church. The meaning of sacrifice and of suffering are mysterious and inexhaustible; but these and the sanctity of life, are clearly addressed for us in the rich deposit of our Catholic faith. Check it out the CCC. And please, forgive my intemperance. |
Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 6:11 AM By Vanessa I couldn’t believe what I was reading! Spiritual egoism? Hmm.. not at all. Rick is embracing life and celebrating the gift of life received from Heaven above. How dare we question the quality of life given to us! Life does not need qualifying! Life never becomes an oxymoron. What faults we notice in others, i.e. the supposed spiritual egoism of Rick, is often a reflection of the writer’s own ego noticing the flaw of his brother as a threat to his own spiritual egoism. Saint Paul says to always focus on the good, the true, and the right in others. The writer indeed lauds Rick as being a faithful Catholic to the teachings of our Beloved Catholic Church in a back handed sort of way… enough said. I pray for Rick as our possible future President of the USA! |

Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 6:55 AM By k In the link, the writer states that Pope Benedict XVI approved the use of condoms for people with AIDS and I do not think that is correct. If it is, would someone post a source. I know much of the media misinterpreted his quote in Light of the World by Seewald to mean that. Also, the writer’s point as horrifying as it is to us, should be addressed seriously. The question is “Is is selfish to bring a child into the world who will suffer.” Every child brought into the world will suffer. When Christ assumed human nature, He knew He would suffer. The writer is showing a false compassion for the little girl. She lacks the insight of seeing the value of life itself. So much evil is justified by the excuse of “preventing suffering.” |

This is the alternative solution the folks at Progressive View believe is the more unselfish option? What a sickening sanctimonious point of view. My thought is these beautiful babies who are most certainly enjoying the beatific vision would champion the God given gift of life as the precious gift it truly is. Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 7:03 AM By irene “Why would one choose, in effect, to take the risk of bringing a doomed child into the world”…doomed child? I wonder if children born with Trisomy 18, down’s syndrome, birth defects, or physical disabilities consider themselves ‘doomed’. I am sure their parents don’t see them that way, and God doesn’t, for sure. Each life is created for a special purpose here. Why some suffer in this life more than others, is a great mystery. However, in faith, we can trust that God has a greater purpose to it all. Unfortunately, there are many, such as this writer, who think they know more than God does. Isabella is one very special child, blessed with a loving family who truly live their faith – an example to us all. |
Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 7:08 AM By Life Lady Ahh, another snake revealed, the writer of this piece of yellow journalism thinks that her point has some validity? Well, only to strengthen my resolve to help Rick Santorum all I can to get elected. While Isabella may not be the “ideal child” to the writer, she is the gift that keeps on giving, the child who is loved, and continues to be loved, and now we ALL get to love her as well. Such children may not be aware (how do we know that?) but God is aware, and has given us all an opportunity to love her, and to take the Santorum example to our hearts. I am grateful to that family, and any other family out there, by their faith and understanding that life is a precious gift, no matter what it looks like. Jesus taught me that, that sometimes He comes in a not so convenient, pretty, or perfect Way. It is for me to accept His gifts and to love Him more and more. The path to holiness is very narrow. Blessed be God, and His Holy Name! |

Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 9:21 AM By Catherine Vincent, Please don’t delete your bookmark. Christ needs your voice to educate lost souls. Why are you upset with CCD for showing faithful Catholics how much work is cut out for them, especially in evangelizing fellow Catholics? This story allows us to reflect on how we would personally respond to this writer if God allowed us the opportunity to personally speak with them or someone like them. This article also shows us how torn apart is the Body of Christ. Does this writer attend Mass? Several years ago I read an upsetting story in the local newspaper. The woman also identified herself as a Catholic. She gathered food, clothing and blankets for the poor and drove it to Mexico. She said that she also brought birth control pills so that the poor women would not have to suffer with more babies. I prayed and asked God if it was his will to allow me the opportunity to meet with her. Prayer works! Two weeks later I was driving behind a Costco and there was a woman gathering bread on pallets. All of the sudden I remembered the story and I thought, No way! I stopped the car and asked her if by any chance, if the newspaper had done a story about her? I almost could not believe it myself. It was the woman in the article. We had such a beautiful conversation. God gave me the opportunity to try to reach out to her. I praised her for her generous works but I told her that God would not be pleased with her giving the women the birth control pills. She wanted to know why it was wrong and I explained and she listened. I found out that she rarely attended Mass and she told me she was afraid of going to confession. She said she would think about everything. I gave her a hug and thanked her for listening to a stranger. I told her how special she was to God because I had asked God for the opportunity to meet her and God arranged a divine appointment. This all happened because of a printed newspaper story where someone thought that the could call their behavior Catholic. |

Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 10:05 AM By MIKE The author of the article does not give only a ‘progressive point of view’ but a HERETICAL and SCHISMATIC point of view. He should never be allowed to call himself Catholic, and should be excommunicated. The author is in violation of the teachings in the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” not only regarding abortion/life issues and the value of every life, but also in his use of the media. Its about time we start publically calling these people HERETICS and SCHISMATICS so that others know the truth of what true Catholics believe and what our Church teaches, and to stop the SCANDALS. CCC: ” 2089 INCREDULITY is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. HERESY is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same. APOSTACY is the total repudiation of the Christian faith. SCHISM is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.” If we call this author, Polosi, Biden and others “Heretics” in the media often enough – the secular media will final get the message that they are not good Catholics and we can prove it. |
Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 10:13 AM By Abeca Christian Catherine Vincent is right, sometimes these stories may be used to educate but it can also backfire on us. I would rather read about his whole family and his story, I admire Rick Santorium and I hope he doesn’t give up, lets keep supporting him. Sometimes we keep crossing that line line. Psychology has always shown that most of the time by what we read often, in repetition nature, we begin to accept things as truth. If you have young and mature minds reading these sort of view points often, it may give the impression that false compassion is good, that showing mercy is ending the life of someone born that way etc. Catherine you and I have strong convictions mostly due to the gifts of graces we’ve been blessed with but others may not. So without any pun intended I could see what Vincent is feeling. We already are bombarded with the liberal point of view. Remember the story is meant to be neutral, what you consider exposure may also be a cheer leading squad for another. My stomach cringed when I read false compassion, to think that someone would take the place of our Lord and decide what life is worth living and what is not, is heart breaking. God bless Rick! He is a wonderful witness of faith and morals thus far! VOTE RICK! |

As Fr. George Rutler wrote just a few days ago: “Satan never looks like Satan. He drapes himself in celebrity and humor and humanitarianism, using celebrity to mislead, humor to mock, and humanitarianism to de-humanize. One hatred in him always exposes him for what he is. Because our Lord said that we must become like little children to inherit the Kingdom of heaven, Satan hates babies.” As do Obama and his minions. |

Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 12:08 PM By Dick I consider myself Liberal, Progressive, Moderate, and Conservative. All of the above and none of the above. The point of view expressed in this article is an abomination and should not be labeled “The Progressive View.” Jesus was a great progressive in his teaching. Many of us who are liberal, progressive, or moderate in our economic philosophies are conservative in reproductive and/or sexual philosophies. I can imagine in rereading this article that I could believe that it was in fact written by someone who is anti-progressive. The intent being to discredit all progressive ideas within the Catholic faith. I am a Catholic with an autistic son who is totally precious to me. The terms liberal, progressive, moderate, or conservative are used by many as pejorative labels. That includes many who have posted here. Shame on you and let’s pray for those who hold to the point of view expressed in this article. God Bless us all. |

Of course there is no known way, and no likely way ever to know pre-natally, an autistic infant child will be born, since their genetic structure is exactly ‘perfect’ like the DNA of the writer of this article, Ivan Strenski. Of course, Mr Strenski couldnt see this irony and probably doesnt even care about it. However, my brother, despite his annoying autistic habits is remarkably intellectually brilliant especially with regard to matters mechanical, musical, and memorizeable. So, if we are going to choose and accept or discard some people, why shouldnt we choose to keep the autistic and discard the Strenski? I find autistic Uncle Joe has way more “character” than Einsatzgruppen Hauptmann Strenski. |
Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 12:21 PM By Clinton So Santorum is being selfish for “bringing a doomed child into the world”? I have heard of a child brought into the world by a young mother, and soon after this child was born, it was predicted that his suffering would pierce his mother’s heart. And while this child was yet just an infant, a King demanded his death. And later, when this child had grown into adulthood, he was scorned for teaching the ways of God. He was insulted, spat upon and scourged. And ultimately he was put to death. Gee, what was wrong with Mary for bringing a “doomed child” into the world? And what’s wrong with that selfish Rick Santorum for loving and taking care of his daughter? After all, Catholics are just simpletons who have the silly notion that life is precious. |

Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 7:02 PM By Harry The writer’s point is not about abortion. It’s about the odds of a woman in her late forties being at extremely high risk of having a health-impaired child. Sarah Palin’s son Trig was also a child conceived late in its mother’s life. Of course God will bless every child and its mother, but it’s just plain risky to conceive a child when a woman is deep beyond her normal fertility range. It is reckless conduct, pure and simple. |

Posted Wednesday, February 08, 2012 8:00 PM By Nightingale Progressives seem to hold to the utilitarian model of the value of a human life: that human life has value, not because it is made in the image of God, but based on what it gives back to society. If a person costs society more than he gives, he has negative value. This is a grievous error and misses the mark. I contend that WE, not the disabled, are the ones being tested, to see how we treat the weak in our society. Progressives utterly fail the test. |

This is a progressive Catholic’s view and as faithful Catholics this shows us that the Church militant has its work cut out for them. As the mother of a daughter with disabilities I truly value CCD for exposing the immense cruelty that families with handicapped children often face. I think we need to toughen up. There are many within our Church who call themselves progressive and their evil agendas are as ugly as this writer’s words. |

Do I know if this is fact? No. But the biological fact does not outweigh the will of God to not prohibit the creation of a life during sex. |

Posted Thursday, February 09, 2012 6:07 PM By JLS I have it on good authority that even severely handicapped/afflicted kids achieve great joy in groups taught and managed by adults who care for and love these kids. I once visited a dance put on for such kids, and the adults ran it so well it was amazing, simply beyond amazing. It was so joyfully amazing as to be beyond the reach of my sense of humor. It was one of those events where God opens up the Pearly Gates and gives us a momentary glimpse. I do not know how those women manage those severe cases of souls but they do wonders. Maybe the critics of mentally, physically and emotionally challenged people and their parents should try to honestly complain to the workers who bring great joy into those difficult lives and open the doors of those souls so God shines His Light out of them and into the darkness of our troubled world. In this case even the utilitarian view would have to cry “uncle” in that the joy of these messed up kids transitioned into the greater society. God, thus, proves once again that He can overcome any objection to His mercy and love. |

Posted Thursday, February 09, 2012 9:57 PM By Catherine Harry, I have some questions for you regarding your Feb. 09, 2012 2:37 PM post. 1. Are you Catholic? 2. Do you attend Sunday Mass regularly? 3. If you are a practicing Catholic could you please let us know what Diocese you belong to because someone has surely not helped you to learn your Catholic faith. It also might just be *you* alone who thinks in cold and sterile terms of statistics instead of the Catholic term called trust. Harry, you must not realize this but you are really inferring that children with birth defects would be much better off if they were never born. You are telling God the author of life, “Look God, Mrs. Santorum is ignoring her old age and statistics. How selfish Mrs.Santorum is to allow You (GOD) to authorize another little soul who might statistically have a birth defect.” Harry, You say that God decreed that there is a time and a season for everything. Have you never been taught that God, WHO IS the author of all life, is also in charge of all of those due seasons and *purposes* to those seasons? God does not view things from statistics. Since God did authorize little Isabella’s life, it WAS the due season in the eyes of the Author of Life. This is why I want to know if you are even Catholic. Children born with birth defects are born with the same immortal soul that you have. Many women choose to abort their babies rather than give them life or give them up for adoption. Many women also say that they don’t want the baby to suffer in this world or go to a stranger because it is not the due season to have the responsibility of a baby. It was absolutely the due season for those unborn babies to be given the chance to live because God had already authorized each and every single one of their very brief lives, even if their mothers, fathers, society, doctors or your statistics choose to say differently. It is always better to have been given the glorious opportunity of a share in Eternal Life than to have never been given that chance at all. |
Posted Thursday, February 09, 2012 10:33 PM By Abeca Christian Harry I don’t entirely agree with your point of view. I have a friend who had her daughter at age 44 and she was born fine, I have a friend who gave birth to her child at 29 and was born with downs. When I was buying my daughter’s 15 year old party dress, a few years ago, the owner of the shop had a sister who was almost 15 years old, her mum was 50 when she had her, she said that she practices what the church teaches and did not use any form of birth control and when her menstrual cycle was leaving, she thought she was reaching menopause but ended up getting pregnant but didn’t know until the symptoms came, her daughter was born healthy except that the mum looks like her grandma because she had her so late of age, she said that she did not believe in abortion so she prayed that since God willed it for her to conceive at such a late age, she prayed for her baby’s health, and yes she was healthy. I understand there are higher risks as we age but if it happens, even if one practices NFP and still happen to get pregnant, then we must honor God’s will. |
Posted Thursday, February 09, 2012 11:00 PM By Catherine JLS, That was an extremely sweet post at 6:07 PM.. Full of depth and Christ’s compassion. Steve Phoenix, God bless you for caring for your brother!. Perhaps Ivan Strenski should reflect on these words from 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 “So take care of your vocation brothers. For not many are wise according to the flesh, not many are powerful, not many are noble. But God has chosen the foolish of the world, so that he may confound the wise. And God has chosen the weak of the world so that he may confound the strong. And God has chosen the ignoble and contemptible of the world, those who are nothing, so that he may reduce to nothing those who are something, So then, nothing that is in the flesh shall glory in his sight” |

Posted Friday, February 10, 2012 7:34 AM By Anne T. Harry and Abeca, I was raised during the first fourteen years of my life by my grandparents. Although I missed out on some things, such as learning to ride a bicycle during my childrenhood, it was compensated by many other benefits. They were able to provide me with private music lessons, great books and an encyclopedia among other things. I did well in school because I had a lot of consistency in my life and was taught strong moral values because most people are more conservative as they get older on such things. Wisdom does, most often come with age. My grandparents saw their mistakes in raising their previous five children too, so although I was questioned at times by others as to why my parents were much older — they made me call them Mom and Dad — there were many advantages too. I remember fondly my grandfather dressing up as Santa Claus for Christmas and the fish he carved for me out of wood and put on a pole, so I could pretend to fish. Out of all my many toys, I think the fishing pole was my favorite. He was also a strong protector, too. My grandmother taught me to appreciate really good cooking and sewing and the value and importance of an education. Although, they had only gone to elementary school, they could read a newspaper and other magazines, and were in many ways self taught. By the way, my grandmother had my mother when she was in her mid or late forties. My mother was born quote, “normal”. My mother was married at fifteen and had me at sixteen, so having children too early can have its problems also. |
Posted Friday, February 10, 2012 6:49 PM By JLS Catherine, sometimes the Lord nails one to the Cross and lets him or her see how He handles the situation of the effects of the Fall. I think some of those adults were volunteers … why would anyone volunteer for such a thing? The agape level of love? I don’t even know if any of them were Catholic. |
Posted Friday, February 10, 2012 10:58 PM By Abeca Christian Anne T praise God you had such a lovely upbringing from loving grandparents. I wish that today there were more conservative grandparents. You’d be surprised how many elders, are the ones, encouraging and helping the liberal view point out of false compassion. |

Posted Tuesday, February 14, 2012 2:01 PM By Zack B The author writes, “I simply cannot fathom why it would be so important for a woman of Karen Santorum’s age—48 years old—to have risked conception, and ignored all the risk factors attendant in conception,” What he failed to point our is that Mrs. Santorum is a nurse who worked in neonatal intensive care. |
