The following comes from a Nov. 14 story in Russia Insider. This article originally appeared at Pravoslavie.ru, the largest Russian Christian website.
Russia’s Civic Chamber, a top legislative body, will be holding hearings on stopping state funding of abortions
A year ago deputies of the Samara Regional Duma submitted a bill to amend article no. 35 of the federal law, “On compulsory medical insurance in the Russian Federation” to the Russian Federation’s State Duma Commission for health protection.
They are proposing to stop the financing of abortions at the expense of the state budget.
On October 31, 2014, at the Civic Chamber participants of the hearings of the Volunteer Work Commission discussed the issues of rights to life for unborn children, reports the Civic Chamber’s website.
“70 years ago, a new morality was created in Europe, according to which the youth should be maximally socialized already at an early age. As a result of this young men assaulted young girls, the number of sexually transmitted diseases and, above all, of abortions among schoolgirls increased,” noted Archpriest Dimitry Smirnov, chairman of the Patriarchal Commission for Family and Protection of Motherhood and Childhood.
According to him, “it did no good except for the enormous profit to pharmaceutical companies. And all this took place “under the aegis of the UN.”
According to Dmitry Sevirkin, deputy of the Samara Duma, Russia ranks 181 in population density.
“We catastrophically lack citizens: teachers, doctors, soldiers. At the same time, the number of abortions made in the country is enormous. The number of abortions made after 1918 can be compared with the total losses of the war (World War II).”
Realizing this problem, the Samara Regional Duma proposed to strike off voluntary abortion from the list of diseases for whose treatment funds are appropriated from the Compulsory Medical Insurance fund, he stressed.
“A child needs special defense and protection, including an adequate legal protection before and after birth alike,” Vladimir Potikha, co-chairman of the organizing committee of the “For Life” pro-life festival cited the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by the Russian Federation.
“We are proposing to adjust the Russian legislation in accordance with the international norms,” he emphasized.
According to Alexander Lyulka, leader of the school of Orthodox missionaries at the Synodal Missionary Department, everybody admits that an abortion means killing.
“If that is so, then abortions must become criminally liable. In our country, committed felons are not subjected to the death penalty, while babies who simply failed to be born are killed with impunity.
“Why can a human being be murdered at the age of between 0 and 9 months, and the state pays for it? Doctors persuade mothers to make abortions as they are responsible for the mothers’ health. Then why not give the doctor’s responsibility for the mother’s health the same status as the responsibility for the unborn child’s life?” A. Lyulka asks the reasonable question.
According to a member of the Russian Federation’s Civic Chamber, the hearings organizer Sergei Rudov, the family issue is one of the principal problems.
“All the proposals put forward by the participants, will be taken into account in the resolution,” he accentuated.

The “new morality” in Europe was of course pioneered by Lenin and his buddies. Whatever the sequence of steps Putin takes to ban abortion, it will be important to have built up sufficient public buy-in to drive down demand before an outright ban or he risks backfire My first step would be to cut off all public funding, all training of personnel and all use of public facilities, then let public response guide my next move. “Hasten slowly” as Augustus would have put it, and God bless Russia.
Based upon this article, there are more abortions each year in the USA, approx. 1 MILLION, than in Russia,
and over 57 MILLION in just the USA alone since 1973.

Just imagine: in a country that begin with the assassination of the ruling aristocratic family, and continued with the slaughter of the middle class “White Russians” and later the successful farmers of the Ukraine and other agricultural interests; a country steeped in fear of religion, that responded to violence whenever religion reared its head: here, the State steps up and declares “No” to State-funded abortion. In fact, it is suggested that abortion itself may soon be outlawed.
The thought of the apostasy of the ruling Soviets is submerged in the sublime perfection of the pending legislative proposal. Who cares about Putin; this is evidence of Our Holy Mother on earth. And, Her blessing is shown in Russia, which is not even Catholic, in the defined sense (but Holy, nonetheless).
Yes, American bishops, hang your heads. Where are you in seeking this same remedy for the soul of America? Let’s see, having another conference in Baltimore, or coming back from Rome, and probably getting ready for something else here or there. Much more important to continue to wreckovate Catholic Churches, or close them altogether (as so few attend and contribute regularly). Continue to ignore Roman Tradition, disobey the Pope and his motu proprio Summorum Pontificum (and others), while you try to complete remake the Church into a Protestant-Lutheran model (so you can sit around the ecumenical campfire, hold hands, and sing “Kumbaya”).
Catholic People — stop giving money to Cardinals Dolan, Wuerl, Abp. Cupich, and many others. Write to them, tell them what a poor job they are doing, give your money to Traditional orders and good, Catholic charities (that do not pass your good money along to abortionists and pro-homosexual advocacy groups). And, give proper respect to real believers, who are willing to brave public opposition and stand up for Christ. But, our puny bishops will be in the back, behind the posts, yelling, “Give us Barabbas”!
“Give us Barabbas!” Yes, that seems to be the apostate, traitor’s cry, of the USCCB!! I agree with St. Christopher’s post! I hope the Russian Orthodox Church will someday succeed in transforming Russia into a truly Christian nation– with no abortions! Maybe Our Blessed Mother is trying to help!
Amen! No funds to USCCB this Sunday. There are wonderful Religious Orders that could use our donations for the greater glory of God.
Maybe the killing of unborn babies will also not be funded in Eastern Ukraine!
It always comes down to population control.
Sex without consequences is an easy sell.
All of Europe and Russia have fully embraced the libertine culture.
It will be interesting to see how the new Russian ethic will b marketed.
In Germany, they are offering cash for families to have babies. That policy has not brought big results.
We will need a group of Russian legislators to come to the USA and talk to the new GOP Congress!
If the USCCB was FORCED to sit inside an abortion mill and watch an entire day’s worth of seeing the butchered remains of tiny little bodies (while viewing the silent screams and struggles of these helpless babies on the ultra-sound) perhaps then Canon 915 would be enforced.
That is a wonderful idea, Catherine. Seeing is believing in many cases.
If Russia is doing the right thing for the right reason (love and protect the human being made in the image of God, and protect the parents from the ghastly act of abortion for the same reason) then Russian society will quickly come forward with personal assistance and solutions in the terribly difficult situations that tempt so many to abortion in Russia. Terrible housing shortages, for one. The secularist morality is another grave problem, organized crime, etc. All Christians should pray that the Holy Spirit supply the awful deficiencies that face Russian civilization.
God bless Russia. I may have to move there.
Russia and Uganda sound like wonderful countries.
About a year ago a book was written entitled RUSSIAN SUNRISE. In it, Russia becomes a Catholic nation, and outlaws abortion and sins against nature. The novel basically makes Russia the promised land because she was consecrated by all the bishops to the Immaculate Heart pf Mary according to what Our Lady of Fatima prescribed. I only wish things were that simple, and that Russia would be the nation to bring the world back to normalcy. Even though Russia is slowly becoming more moral than most western nations, I have heard that WWIII would break out with Russia fighting the United States.
“Father Karl”: The problem in America, are its Catholic bishops. And, now, the Vatican is assuming more power to force Liberalism into the episcopacy — e.g., Abp. Cupich in place of Cardinal George. Make no mistake, the USCCB will do all that it can to foist abortion enabling policies on US bishops (to go along with homosexual-endorsing “welcoming” policies). Most bishops simply do not care much about “catholicism” but do care greatly about their careers and about how many dollars are coming in. Churches and schools will continue to close because the true Faith is rarely taught.
The enemy from within is always the worst one. Russia looks promising because — under the Soviets — it was so backward, so violently opposed to religion, and so in favor of sexual freedom without consequences. Even a present token “formal” leglislation against abortion — and this seeems much more than that — is enormously impressive. One must suspect that our Holy Mother is behind this, particularly when thinking about what She said at Fatima about Russia. (Perhaps you are correct, “juergensen” about a country of choice.)
I recently had a great phone conversation with a real Catholic Bishop whose name will remain hidden because I don’t want to ad to his headaches by associating him with me (he has never asked me to do that); However he told me that he would do what he believes God wants no matter what the rest of them do. Pray for such Bishops as he and others like him.
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika and His Church!
Viva Cristo Rey!
Yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Russia may ban abortions (a good thing), but it is a country rotten to the core.
Look at what it does to Catholics!
Look at what is does to its neighbors, including Ukraine!
Look at how Putin holds onto power like some new Czar, crushing or arresting any opponents.
