In its newly released report on The State of Abortion in the United States, a pro-life group has warned that Democrats and pro-abortion activists see the Equal Rights Amendment as a way to insert a right to abortion into the United States Constitution.
Released Friday, the National Right to Life Committee’s report contains an entire section warning that the pro-abortion movement hopes to use the Equal Rights Amendment as a “constitutional stealth missile” to “air-drop into the U.S. Constitution a provision that they believe, and pro-lifers fear, could be used to entrench and expand a constitutional ‘right’ to abortion.”
While the deadline to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment passed more than 40 years ago, pro-abortion activists are expected to insist that the amendment has already been ratified. By the 1979 ratification deadline, 35 states had ratified the ERA, leaving it three short of the three-fourths majority required to take effect. However, three additional states ratified the measure in the past three years, giving it the required number of states for ratification, albeit they were more than 40 years too late. Although 38 states have voted to ratify the ERA at some point, five of those states revoked their ratifications after the fact.
According to a quote attributed to NARAL Pro-Choice America, “With its ratification, the ERA would reinforce the constitutional right to abortion by clarifying that the sexes have equal rights, which would require judges to strike down anti-abortion laws because they violate both the constitutional right to privacy and sexual equality.”
The report featured a quote from the Biden campaign’s website, where he vowed to “proudly advocate for Congress to recognize that 3/4 of states have ratified the amendment and take action so our Constitution (includes ERA).”

Why would Catholics be against equal rights? The Catechism affirms that men and women are equal in dignity before God. It’s Catholic teaching that men and women are equal. Therefore equal rights are deserved and should be the law. Why would any Catholic oppose that? President Biden by supporting equal rights for women and men shows how much his Catholic faith informs his statesmanship. Don’t use abortion as a bogeyman to exclude equal rights.
Women might be equal in the eyes of God, but we are different from men. Biden just killed women’s athletics by making it lawful for men who claim to be women to participate in women’s athletics. Of course, some radical feminists got us into this chaotic mess when some female journalists insisted on the “right” to go into men’s locker room. Now they are getting a taste of their own medicine.
They are not against equal rghts. Just the opposite. Where is the equal rights for all the female unborn children in the womb and their right not to be killed in this Amendment?
The ERA was very controversial. People said it would outlaw separate male and female restrooms. People said that women would lose their rights to have doors opened for them and to stay home and raise their children. Women would have to serve in combat. We would end up like Russia, with women having to go to work and leave their children in state-run day care.
.
Joan the great majority of American Catholics are not opposed to equal rights. Quite simply (and sadly from my perspective) many posters here still think that women should cover their heads and be silent, barefoot and pregnant. The early Church opposed the Roman pattern of subjugation of women. Let’s be real – who cooked the Last Supper?
DNP, I have yet to read a poster here who asserts what you claim. Please share an example, that I might be better informed.
Dona nobis Leftist….if you dont like what people post here go to the Fishwrap site. Only a leftist would oppose a woman being pregnant
Joan, at issue is just what constitutes “equal rights.” Without a clear understanding of what this term means operationally we cannot proceed further. For that matter, we must ask what it means for men and women to be “equal.” The issues are too great to be disposed of in a few lines. It seems you are not Catholic by how you began your post. May I suggest reading a standard Catholic on moral theology to delve deeper into these issues. t will prove a great benefit and enable you to answer your own questions posed here.
Catholic Phyllis Schlafly led the fight against the original so-called Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970’s, based primarily on its association with and promotion of abortion. ERA proponents knew it then and they know it now. Here’s from the organization that Mrs. Schlafly left behind:
“One of Phyllis’s crowning achievements was to expose the truth about ERA. Most protections its proponents claim would benefit women are already codified in U.S. law, such as Equal Pay for Equal Work and the Equal Credit Act. In fact, laws which discriminate do so to protect women — such as exempting them from serving equally in military combat or allowing schools, prisons, and domestic violence shelters to exclude men on the basis of sex. But while much uncertainty swirls, one fact is not up for debate — the connection between ERA and abortion, redefinition of gender, and eradication of the natural family unit.”
They are leading a campaign to “Stop ERA Again.” See https://www.phyllisschlafly.com/stopera/
And, there is nothing “stealth” about it. Ask the supporters of the current ERA themselves about “reproductive freedom” and “reproductive equality.” Since men are never forced to be pregnant, why should women?
And now women have the right (wrong) to have their children killed in the womb,! From barefoot & pregnant to the exploitation.& degradation through the violence of abortion. How far they have come.
