The following comes from a Jan. 21 release issued by Californians for Life.

“Thursday, January 22nd, marks the 42nd year of Roe v Wade, which when combined with the Supreme Court decision Doe v Bolton, legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, resulting in over 50 million lives lost and millions of women hurt.  Our California legislative focus this year will be to pass parental notification, which would allow parents to be notified when our teenage daughters undergo a life-ending, life-changing medical procedure such as abortion”, said Wynette Sills, director of Californians for Life, a coalition of pro-life voters throughout the state.  The public is invited to participate in the Advocacy Day at the Capitol on Thursday, January 22nd, with 9:30 registration in Room 447 of the Capitol, 10:00 am training workshop, and legislative office visits from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

“Each year, over 16,000 girls less than 18 years of age undergo an abortion here in California.  Teen girls are not allowed to be given an aspirin at school, get a flu shot, have a cavity filled, enter a tanning booth, or go on a school field trip without parental involvement, yet they are left all alone to undergo life-changing, life-ending abortion procedures.  39 states outlined here in blue, already have parental involvement laws in place to protect teen age girls”, according to Sills, as their organization, Californians for Life, will be asking each state assembly member and state senator to sign on as co-author to this “reasonable, common sense legislation”.

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, a majority (68%) of Californians favor parents to be notified before a girl under 18 can get an abortion, with majorities across party lines. 55% of Democrats, 66% independents, and 77% of Republicans support parental notification. Latinos are the most likely group to support Parental Notification, with 81% approval.  70% of the California Asian community, 68% of blacks, and 58% of whites support Parental Notification.  “California demographics have changed since the last vote on parental notification in 2008, when over 6.2 million people (48%) voted in favor of Parental Notification, despite the multi-million dollar ad campaign by the abortion industry to oppose parental involvement in teen abortions” said Sills.
At least half of the California teen pregnancies are fathered by adult males 20 years or older. Secret abortions enable the sexual exploitation of young girls, including girls who are enslaved by sex traffickers. Sexual predators destroy the evidence of their criminal behavior through secret abortions.  This Constitutional Amendment will deter dangerous, devastating exploitation of young girls.

Parental notification will give parents an opportunity to provide post-abortion care, especially for serious, even life-threatening, physical, emotional, or psychological complications which may result from abortion.  Parent involvement is even more important now that midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, who aren’t medical doctors, are allowed to perform abortions. “For the sake of our daughters, parents need to be notified before any medical procedure is performed on a minor child.  Parents, not the abortion business, have the best interest of our daughters at heart” explained Sills.
