The Democratic Party has rejected the message that drove its politics since President Bill Clinton’s administration — that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare” — and embraced abortion rights with few stipulations. Every leading Democratic presidential candidate has fallen in line.
But unlike support for same-sex marriage, which rose drastically before it was legalized nationwide, Americans’ views on abortion have remained relatively consistent since 1975. A majority of Americans believe the procedure should be legal — but only in certain cases, according to Gallup’s long-running tracking poll.
Some abortion rights supporters worry that establishing abortion rights as a Democratic litmus test is too inflexible for Americans conflicted over abortion. They fear that it could hurt the party in rural areas and the more moderate, suburban districts that may hold the key to regaining the White House, and where many of the remaining vulnerable abortion clinics are.
The above comes from a Dec. 1 story in the New York Times.
The democrats are basically socialist now
Jeanne Bergeron,
The terms socialist and socialism are bantered around a bit too easy these days. Social Security was called socialism by those who opposed it. Medicare was called socialism by those who opposed it. Neither is socialism. Socialism is an economic system in which the government owns and operates the means of production and distributes wealth as it sees fit. Ours is still a democratic system. Even the Senator from Vermont, although a bit left of center, doesn’t call for the establishment of a socialistic state. I think that liberal and conservative are more precise terms for everyday use. Are the Democrats liberal? Yes, and some are very liberal. But I haven’t heard any of them call for a socialistic state.
Bob One, there are plenty of democratic who would love nothing more than complete government control of every aspect of the economy, You claim no one is saying this but you are dead wrong.. think Warren and AOC both would have fit perfectly in Castros cuba
Don’t you think AOC and her friemds in congress is a socialist with all the programs their pushing
Would you not agree it’s creeping in? The slow creep is always how the demonic works. It’s how the USA got where it is today. Take out school prayer….etc. Could we not all agree on that?
The “safe, legal and rare” criteria for abortion that surfaced as a catchphrase during Bill Clinton’s presidency, maddeningly hypocritical as it was seen by prolifers, was a brilliant trap for voters who wanted a quick fix for a hurting conscience. With three little adjectives applied to abortion it declared that there was in fact no problem with abortion. Doesn’t “legal” equal “safe”? To mention them both is poetically redundant, but excusable, in case any little bit of concern should occur to the voter. After all, the ideal of safety was attained on January 22, 1973, with abortion declared to be a Constitutional right at any time prior to birth, as long as mother and medical provider agree to the destruction of the child. As to “rare”, this word appealed to the experience of the average voter, whose life is rarely invaded by the stark reality of abortion: maybe once or twice in a lifetime, at most, for Americans. That soothing final note in the trio of positives – “rare” – is silent about the approximately 1.5 million unborn children killed each year in the U.S. alone, but it speaks rather of how often the thought of abortion intrudes into the thoughts of the voter who wants to be rid of the awful subject. The slogan “safe, legal and rare” did its job, lulling and dulling many a conscience. The slogan has now been ditched in favor of an out-of-the-closet acceptance of abortion as a positive good…no need for rare…and no need to make birth a border to choice.
I believe there are less than ten states really ‘in play’ for President for 2020. The Republicans must concentrate on their ‘safe’ states from 2016 and the ‘in play’ states’
I agree with Bob One re ‘socialist’
You and Bob One are both wrong, and neither will ever explain how giving more money and power to an unaccountable bureaucratic state increases the liberty and propspertity of the aveage citizen
The New York Times is loathe to admit defeat or trouble for liberal causes. If they say that the Democrats are losing the abortion debate, it’s noteworthy.
Thee is no Democrat I would even vote for. The leaders are completely insane They are doing everything they can to destroy the two parent heterosexual family — EVERYTHING. Their news stations are totally obsessed with Trump. They talk about nothing else. First it was Russia’s fault, now it is Ukraine’s fault, and there is absolutely nothing there that they have not done themselves. They sold the country out a long time ago
I laugh when they say Russia affected our elections. I would like them to name one country that has not affected our elections — name one. I turn them off, only hearing in changing channels, and it is always the same old, tired thing.
You cannot be a Democrat and a practicing Catholic — they contradict each other.
The Democrat platform:
— Abortion
— Elimination of God
— Same-sex ”marriage”
— No parental notification for a minor girl’s contraception/abortion
Yet, so many Catholics are Democrat, believe in this platform and vote for Democrat politicians who believe in this platform. I actually heard a priest’s homily once who said any Catholic who votes for a politician who has a voting record on the above platform, commits a mortal sin and thus is separated from God and should not receive Communion.
Where I live the older generation voted democrat because that’s how everyone voted. They could not think of voting for another party
Stupidity increases with age
Not all the elderly did. I did not. because I read the platforms of the parties; I read the text of the propositions to see who is telling the truth, and I find out how the judges and congresspeople have voted, and I vote accordingly. So do the friends I trust. Too many people are too lazy to actually read them, or because they cannot read just listen to whatever their party or acquaintances say. There are some Republicans I will not vote for either.
A lot depends on what one believes is right when it comes to Catholic and – name your political party of choice. I’ve heard some say that you can’t be a Catholic and vote Democrat and I have heard that you can’t be a Catholic and vote Republican. I’ve even seen a poster that said that Christians who support Trump are the best argument for being an atheist. None are true. In this day and age, we are forced to vote for the least terrible of the candidates.
“Stupidity increases with age” …. bohemond
here’s a corollary:
“live LONGER …
get WRONGER.”
