[Editor’s note: Leon Panetta compiled a strong pro-abortion voting record while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1976 to 1994 from California’s 16th Congressional District. In 1990, he was a co-sponsor of the federal Freedom of Choice Act, and later, as President Bill Clinton’s White House chief of staff, Panetta defended the then-president’s veto of a bill that would have prohibited partial-birth abortions.]
Leon Panetta, who served as United States Secretary of Defense, CIA director and an eight-term member of Congress during his 50-year career, will be the featured speaker at Santa Clara University School of Law’s commencement ceremony.
Panetta will address the class of 2017 at Santa Clara Law’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 20 at 9:30 a.m. in the Mission Gardens.
“Our students have a tremendous role model in our distinguished alumnus, Leon Panetta, and his decades of ethical leadership and public service,” said Santa Clara University School of Law Dean Lisa Kloppenberg.
“His career exemplifies our University’s Jesuit ethos of putting one’s talents to work in service to others. At every turn he has endeavored to create a more just, humane, and sustainable world.” Panetta is currently chairman of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, a nonpartisan, not-for-profit study center seeking to attract thoughtful men and women to lives of public service and prepare them for the policy challenges of the future.
It includes a Congressional Internship program for students, including Santa Clara University students, as well as a lecture series, policy research and other youth civic-engagement opportunities. “As an alumnus of Santa Clara University and the School of Law, I am honored to speak to the class of 2017 at their commencement ceremony,” said Panetta.
“I hope to share with them the same inspiration I received from Santa Clara to a life of public service to our democracy.” Panetta’s affiliation with Santa Clara University is a close and longstanding one.

I am so sick and tired of these ‘false flag’ ‘catholic’ universities bringing in these leftist, amoral speakers…here we have FINALLY got a pro-life President & Vice-President…and ‘catholic’ Notre Dame refuses to allow our pro-life President to speak at commencement…what a disgusting shame….and yes, we do have a wonderful Vice-President who is very Pro-Life….and now, as many other ‘catholic universities are bringing in amoral, pro-abortion leftist politicos to speak at commencements…what a disgrace not only to our country but to Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother….crucifixion for all of us who are traditional, true believers in the REAL Catholic church never ends….when the Divine Mercy of Our Lord, Jesus Christ ends…
and His Divine justice commences it will be a sad time for those who cannot differentiate from the political left and God’s Holy Will…..
For all people, not just Mr. Penetta, does being pro-choice or not anti-abortion wipe out, erase, the rest of a life well lived in the service of people and the nation? If so, then the Church has a big education job ahead of it. Most Catholic women and men do not consider being pro-choice the same as pro-abortion. Most women I know are anti-abortion but pro-choice. A hard concept to grasp for many of us. Yet, when was the last time the issue ever came up in a homily, in a Bible study, in a Church gathering?
That’s exactly right – being a pro-choice politico wipes out everything. He’s complicit in the deaths of 61 million unborn Americans. Calling anything else he did “service” is a mirage. His “service” amounted to nothing more than a front operation for the ultimate objective of murder. No different from the Mafia running a front operation trucking company. Nothing he did was so spectacular anyway that it couldn’t have been done by any number of pro-life Americans. But that’s the point, the Jacobin Democrats cannot have spiritually pure people in their ranks, otherwise they cannot advance their ultimate goal of global / Godless / borderless / socialist dictatorship where individual lives mean nothing.
“For if they having escaped from defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition is worse than their first. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than having known it to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them.” 2 Peter 2: 20-21
“And if the just turn away from justice and do evil, like all the abominations the wicked do, can they do this evil and still live? None of the justice they did shall be remembered because they acted treacherously and committed these sins.” Ezekiel 18: 24
Ezekiel 20:21: “But if the wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed, if he keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live. He shall not die! None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the justice he has shown.”
Juanita, no self respecting college would let Mr. Trump speak at a college graduation, in spite of his recent conversion to pro-life. The man has proven to be a mockery of the Office of President, inarticulate to the extreme, favored with fifth grade tweeter rants and your basic bully. He is giving all of us conservatives a bad name in the eyes of the world. He got elected President, now he should start acting like one. Then maybe la college will invite him to speak.
Bob One, Are you really trying to tell us that you consider yourself a conservative?
Could it possibly be that buried somewhere deep within him is some faint awareness that it’s not good to be a liberal ??!! HA!
Book recommendation: Fr. Felix Sarda Y Salvany, “LIBERALISM IS A SIN,” available from TanBooks.com.
Do you seriously have reality turned on its head? No “self respecting” LIBERAL college will invite Trump. That means about 99% of the colleges in the country. Having Trump would demolish their liberal credentials among their similarly corrupted peers, and that’s all they care about. Keeping whining about Trump’s personality. Nobody cares. The seating of Neil Gorsuch is a monumental achievement in the eyes of conservatives. And a replacement for Ginsburg is next. The jig is up for the Jacobin Democrats.
Panetta “has endeavored to create a more just, humane, and sustainable world” by destroying creation, unborn humans.
If we are to win the culture war, then we need to win the language war first. We need to reclaim the language and call people like Mr. Panetta by the correct names. They are not “dissident” or “heterodox” Catholics. That lends them too much esteem. No, they are “deviant Catholics” and hypocrites. They deviate from the norm of the Magisterium and pervert the Truth. We love deviant Catholics enough not to co-dependently enable them as do the deviant Bishops, whom we also love. Such bishops at a minimum deviate from the norm of Canon Law, which requires them to publicly correct public scandalous deviant Catholics like Mr. Panetta.
Agreed. Also, Santa Clara needs to be publicly reprimanded. Don’t forget, Panetta didn’t develop all his apostasy on his own. He attended SCU both for undergrad and law, and has been SCU’s poster boy for all public image purposes for decades. He scratches the Jesuits’ backs, and they scratch his. There is hardly a greater bastion of academic liberalism than Jesuit Santa Clara, except maybe the Jesuit University of San Francisco, 50 miles to the north. Of course, USF’s liberalism has the ‘advantage’ of being buttressed by the homosexual culture of San Francisco. The Jesuits took out the confessionals in St. Ignatius Church and put in an art gallery. They’re all the same swatch of cloth.
How many dead babies will take to satisfy Bob One and his fellow fake “Catholics”?
John Feeney, readers on this site know that I have always been against abortion. But, I am also willing to recognize the situation in the country and the world. Only nine countries in the world outlaw abortion, and most of them allow it for woman’s health, cases of rape, or incest. In our country, the U.S., very few people support abortion, but a majority think that a woman should have the right to choose. When I grew up, abortion was illegal in every state, yet everyone knew where to get one. Today, the Church is anti-abortion, but not very much pro-life, to mince words a bit. Where are the homes for unwed mothers, the orphanages for young children, the help for single mothers, etc. We can’t just say “don’t have an abortion”,…
