The following comes from a May 17 item on the Huffington Post.
Republican and Democrats sparred this week on where Jesus Christ would stand on food stamps, a federal program that supported 47 million Americans last year.
On Wednesday, the House Agriculture Committee approved Republican legislation that would reform farm subsidies and trim the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by roughly $2.5 billion a year. Republicans want fewer Americans to qualify for food stamps simply because they receive benefits from another safety net program. Under the new legislation, more people would have to pass income and asset tests to be eligible for food stamps. Nearly 2 million fewer people would qualify.
Rep. Juan Vargas, a California Democrat and former member of the Jesuits, a Catholic religious order, said he favored a Democratic amendment to undo the cuts because Jesus made himself clear on feeding the poor.
“Jesus kinda fools around and gives you parables. He doesn’t oftentimes say exactly what he means,” Vargas said. “But in Matthew 25 he’s very, very clear. And he delineates what it takes to get into the kingdom of heaven very, very clearly. And he says how you treat the least among us, the least of our brothers, that’s how you treat him.”
In Matthew 25, Jesus describes those who will enter heaven as anyone who gave him food when he was hungry, invited him into their homes when he was a stranger, clothed him, cared for him while he was sick and visited him in prison. “The extent that you did it to one of these brothers of mine, even the least of them, you did it to me,” Jesus says.
Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) said during the hearing that he, too, is a follower of Christ.
“I read this chapter of Matthew 25 to speak to me as an individual,” Conaway, a Southern Baptist, said. “I don’t read it to speak to the United States government. And so I would take a little bit of umbrage with you on that. Clearly, you and I are charged that we do those kinds of things but [our government is not] charged with that….”
Amid debates over the debt ceiling, federal budget cuts and the fiscal cliff over the last two years, dozens of prominent denominational and church leaders formed a coalition called the Circle of Protection, to lobby for the protection of assistance programs. In 2012, liberal Catholic groups in particular criticized former vice-presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who prominently supported broad budget cuts to government assistance. A Catholic, he said his views came from the Catholic principle of subsidiarity, meaning that decisions should happen at the lowest level of government that can handle them most effectively — often individuals — instead of big bureaucracies.
But groups like the Circle of Protection don’t always sway Republican policy. During the food-stamp debate on Wednesday, other Republicans disagreed with Vargas’ position and his reading of the Bible.
“The Bible says lots of things,” Rep. Stephen Lee Fincher (R-Tenn.) said. He pointed to Matthew 26:11, which says “for you always have the poor with you,” then 2 Thessalonians 3:10, which says “for even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: If anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.” Republicans have argued that programs like food stamps discourage work and make the safety net more of a hammock.
“Jesus made it very clear we have a duty and obligation as Christians and as citizens of this country to take care of each other. Democrat, Republican, Independent — we should look after one another,” he said. “But I think a fundamental argument we’re having today is what’s the duty of the federal government. We’re all here on this committee making decisions about other people’s money.”
Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) cited Ephesians 2:8-9, which says, “for by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
“It always looks good when politicians can go say, we brought a bunch of money to this project here or that project there, standing next to this big, giant blown-up check somewhere and saying, ‘look what we did for you.’ That’s all someone else’s money,” LaMalfa said. “We should be doing this as individuals, helping the poor….”

Juan Vargas is just another Fake Catholic. Our Lord and Redeeemer Jesus Christ told us to help the poor not ask the government to do it!
And if enough individuals do not rise to the need … then what?
Check his voting record, I don’t believe Juan Vargas applies any of this to the unborn! It would be good to find out just how much Vargas gives of his tax payer supported enormous salary to the poor!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Obviously, another man who has lost his faith and been tainted by the poisoned fruit of modernism…which can lead to heresy and possibly perdition
themalacologist,
You used the wrong term “possibly”. You should have used “probably”!
What exactly is a “themalacologist”?
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
a scientist that studies mollusks…c’mon man…google the word!…I have only met 2 carcinologist’s…a zoologist that specializes in the study of crustacea…
Kenneth, this dude is a sodomologist, and is simply playing with us, trying to find an opening for his deception.
You sound just like Catherine.
Juan Vargas has always used the faith to his gain. I recall in his early years, he promised many pro-life faithful from St, Rose of Lima, Chula Vista parish, that he was pro-life and would vote pro-life….he lied!
He is an opportunist at best! I can’t stand the man….I can’t stand Hispanics like him and unfortunately there are many like him even if they are not running for office of any sort.
So where is Sand Diego’s Bishop Brom regarding this scandalous heretic and schismatic?
Mandy pretty much Bishop Brom is not really the type that would do or say something……from his record. But I can tell you that Vargas surely can fool people, he seems to know how to say the right things to desensitize what he does or is pretty sneaky.
Abeca,
Had Vargas lived in Mexico in the early 30’s, he most probably would have been a supporter of the butcher Calles, certainly not a Cristero!
Viva Cristo Rey!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Vargas preaches to be for family values but his voting record does not represent that! I remember also a while back someone rang my door bell and wanted to say hi and asked for our support to get Juan elected…I said no way….I told them exactly why. The young man didn’t say anything because he knew that everything I said was valid concerns and he even seemed like he was re-thinking his support for him as well.
It was an interesting conversation….it’s amazing how many Hispanics are fooled by him.
Juan Vargas is a bogus Catholic. In his pre-election propaganda he used photos of himself in a Roman collar. How despicable to use this when he supports abortion and homosexuality. He has a perfect rating from Planned Parenthood and supports the gay agenda. Here is another guy who boasts Harvard Law School in his background. What a sad bunch of Latinos who are supporting the Culture of Death and promoting the death of their own people.
Laurette I understand what you mean…..but he is not much different from many Hispanic Catholics, that is sure sad to say.
Cesar Chavez was the only man who could go on a 30 hunger strike and gain 2 pounds…
That was a disgusting comment and you know it. Shame on you!
LOL!…it was a joke man…get over yourself McCrea…”digusting comment indeed”!…rotflol!
OKAY I am lost here…what was meant by his comment and why is it disgusting? I didn’t get it….someone please help me here. If you want….it’s not a priority in my life but would be nice to understand what he meant with that comment.
Themalacologist,
Please document what you just wrote about Cesar Chavez. I would love to have it for my files.
We do know however that he was a tool for the Demoncrat Party, and never refused to support any pro-death Demoncrat! He also never supported any pro-life Republican!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
It was a standard joke in California for years…you don’t need it for your files Ken…LOL!
I still don’t get it..
Abeca –
Were you familiar with the late Mynette Fasth in your area? She was quite a dynamic Catholic activist there. You must know that CV produced more young Priests and Nuns (orthodox) during the 1980s and 1990s than probably elsewhere in our continent. I have been out of the area since.
May many graces be bestowed upon you.
Baron no not really. I don’t recall, I was a child in the 80’s, then maybe in the 90’s when I was still young and didn’t get married just yet….I wonder if my parents do? To be honest Chula Vista, is that the area you are speaking about? Because I don’t even attend the parishes here, I’m sad to say that I feel that there are many abuses and Catholicism is watered down. But to their credit maybe they have changed because I haven’t visited them but when I have, it was sad to see the lack of Catholicity. So we visit other parishes from other areas in San Diego. : )
Sorry but I have no clue what you are talking about.
Where is Vargas’ Bishop, San Diego Diocese Bishop Brom?
Why has Vargus not been excommunicated per Canon 915 and/or 1399? Vargus commits public SCANDAL, and is a heretic and schismatic. He should not advertise himself as Catholic.
1, Abortion is a non-negotiable.
2. Same sex marriage (support of sodomy) is a non-negotiable.

From the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”:
1. SUBSIDIARITY – ” 1894 In accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, neither the state nor any larger society should substitute itself for the initiative and responsibility of individuals and intermediary bodies.”
and
” 1883 Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which “a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co- ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.”
and # 1885 & 2209.
2. COMMUTATIVE JUSTICE: ” 2411 Contracts are subject to commutative justice which regulates exchanges between persons and between institutions in accordance with a strict respect for their rights.
Commutative justice obliges strictly;
it requires safeguarding property rights, paying debts, and fulfilling obligations freely contracted.
Without commutative justice, no other form of justice is possible.
One distinguishes commutative justice from legal justice which concerns what the citizen owes in fairness to the community,
and from distributive justice which regulates what the community owes its citizens in proportion to their contributions and needs.”
The Federal Government is only to be involved as a last resort – Individuals, then local government, then the State, and lastly the Federal Government.
All Governments (as well as us individuals) are obliged to pay their debts.
Jesus never taught governments must do things so individuals will get to Heaven. Governments are not going to Heaven or Hell. He taught individual responsibility.
Regarding Mt 25 35-37. We will be judged as individuals.
Regarding able bodied persons work is required not hand-outs. 2 Thess 3:10-12.
Anyone who owns a computer can afford to help those truly in need. Money donations to help pay utility bills, or going through pantries for food goods, or cleaning out the house, garage etc., and giving those things we do not need to Charity all help those less fortunate.
Since many US Diocese Bishops have not encouraged all Catholics in their Diocese to read the Bible, the CCC, and the Code of Canon Law,
many Catholics are truly ignorant when heretics quote the Bible and say something is teaching of the Church.
These Bishops ignore the last 3 Popes exhorting us to read and study.
“ In this Year of Faith let us ask ourselves if we have actually taken a few steps to get to know Christ and the truths of faith more, by reading and meditating on the Scriptures, studying the Catechism, steadily approaching the Sacraments. ” – Pope Francis 5/13/2013
Paul,
Re.: “Where is Vargas’ Bishop, San Diego Diocese Bishop Brom?, the word limit on this Site does not give us enough space to amply answer that question; however in regards to Canon 915 and others, he is absent without leave! This also applies to most of the U.S. Bishops!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Says you…you do live in a most dichotomous world my friend…strangely incongruent at times though…
Well Malacologist we are not to be of this world you know…We live in it but we are not to be part of it….hope that makes sense.
Go Paul!
It’s amazing (and unfortunate) that Protestants know the Bible better than a former Jesuit and most US Catholics – due to many years of poor catechesis.
And its unfortunate that CA Bishops do not excommunicate heretics and schismatics. 1 Cor 5:11-13
Mandy its true on what you said “due to many years of poor catechesis.” You are correct…so we have to look at the root of all and also to not be disappointed of the fact that people also have free will. So with free will, even if some are well educated in the faith, some are in bad will. But of course we must still persevere and teach the truth, teach the faith etc…we must never water down Catholicism.
There are more faithful who wish someone would of taken the time to correct their error that they have been taught by some in the church….now that they know, they look back and think….it could of prevented so much more grief.
Some of it Mandy is that they do not want to bother with learning anything about the Bible, and some people do not like reading. Some just sit it on their coffee table for good looks but never open it up. They had better start doing so if they want to end up in the right place after they die, or at least read the approved Catholic catechisms.
Juan argues that Jesus would have us feed the poor. To him that means setting up federal programs which feed the poor. He forgets that it was Big Government which actually taxed the people into poverty in the first place, big government who kept the Jews under their thumb and big government soldiers who scourged and mocked Jesus, beat him on the way to the Cross and pounded the nails into His Hands and Feet. Instead of feeding the poor himself, he wants big government to feed the poor, so he can sit back in comfort and think he’s done enough by paying his taxes and supporting big government bureaucracy.
Fr. John,
Unfortunately, and I am of Hispanic heritage, most Hispanics love the welfare tyrannical State. Jesus and His Apostles actually fed the poor themselves, no government funds!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Yes, the Roman Emperors taxed all the decent people for all the “fun” and circuses in the Roman Area — men killing each other for sport, like our abortion “circus”.
Thank goodness we at least have Doug La Malfa in Congress to help counter the Devil’s playmates. But, it’s not just the politicians who borrow Jesus’ words to mislead the public. Priests do it also, and leaders of community organizing groups, as well.
The Honorable Juan Vargas is doing the USCCB’s bidding re: the farm bill (see USCCB, other Catholic organizations weigh in on farm bill … and thus in their good graces according to the “seamless garment” theory (see ‘Seamless garment’ theory has been abused to ignore life issues …
Why is it that the USCCB can only get homosexuals to do its bidding?
Jesus just kind of fools around? Whut?
Once again…LIBERATION THEOLOGY…JESUITS favorite theology..it is OK to lie about income and any other pre-requisite to obtain food stamps or any kind of welfare…
I guess you don’t like the new pope?
Liberation theology has been condemned as heresy Jim…spend some time doing some research on the matter…before you give some “flip”, uneducated response!
There are two kinds of Jesuits….those who are faithful, just a few of them, and those who are heretics and scandalous….what I heard is that our Pope is faithful, praise God.
well said Abecca…you brought the discussion into much greater focus! bravo!
Malacologist you are new here….I’ve been commenting here for a while now….so I say less things now because many things have already been defended and have been said and if I have energy enough to say again…then so be it but for now…less is more for me right now. For the moment!
Jesus, actually forbids stealing of any kind, and that certainly includes the government stealing from one person or group to give to another. Why can’t these so called bishops understand that? Do they actually read the Bible, Duohay Rhiems preferred!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
The Progressives suffer from what is called “The Robin Hood Syndrome”.
They admire anyone who can operate on OPM.
When we turn our responsibility to do good (feed the poor, aid widows and orphans, etc.) over to the government we give up our duty and the grace we receive from being charitable. These liberals like to use the bible to promote their programs so they can insure votes.
What orphanage did Vargas do service in El Salvador? What years? What town?
