The following comes from an Oct. 30 story in Los Angeles archdiocese Angelus News.
[Cal Catholic editor: What Angelus News omits is that Gray Davis in 2003, while governor, was told by Bishop Weigand in Sacramento to stop receiving Communion because of Davis’ public support of abortion and that Ming Chin provided one of the two deciding votes in 1987 in overturning California’s parental consent law requiring parental consent before abortions on minor girls.]
Scores of lawyers, judicial and public officials, and other legal professionals were on hand at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels the afternoon of Oct. 21 for the 32nd annual Red Mass, celebrated by Archbishop José Gomez in honor of their “service to our society,” as the archbishop noted in his welcoming remarks.
Notable public officials and members of the judiciary participated in this year’s interfaith liturgy — including former California governor Gray Davis and California Superior Court Judge Daniel Buckley.
San Fernando Region Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Wilkerson presented the homily. In lieu of discussing how the assembly of legal professionals should do their jobs (“That would be a disaster,” joked Bishop Wilkerson with a laugh), he instead addressed everyday challenges typically facing individuals in nearly any profession.
“When I talk to people…about their lives, they often use the same words over and over again: overworked, overbooked, overwhelmed,” he said. “It seems that our culture has impressed upon us the equation that the busier you are, the more important you are [and] it seems that the inevitable result ends up being a crisis of faith for those who believe… It takes no moral courage to conform to government and social pressures, but it takes a deep faith to swim against the tide.
“Let’s stop and think for a moment: What voices are we listening to? Is there ever any room for God’s voice in our lives?” Bishop Wilkerson continued. “In order to hear God’s voice, we have got to be people of prayer… Prayer needs to be the steering wheel that directs our path throughout our earthly journey.”
California Supreme Court Justice Ming Chin offered the final remarks at the close of Mass, which was sponsored by the St. Thomas More Society of Los Angeles. St. Thomas More was a 16th century lawyer who became chancellor of England and chief advisor to King Henry VIII.
When faced with choosing between his faith and his ambitions, he chose his Catholicism and it cost him his life.
“We must follow the example of St. Thomas More and dedicate ourselves, once again, to the rule of law,” Chin said.
“Do we want our judges…to test the political whims each time they are called to make difficult decisions? Or do we want our judges to be fair, impartial and independent? Let us choose the latter, let us choose to follow the stellar example of our patron, St. Thomas More, so that the liberty we all cherish can be preserved for all of us.”
For Maricarmen Puente, who recently took the California bar exam with the goal of becoming an immigration lawyer, the Red Mass was a “beautiful” experience that reinforced her desire to seek justice for society via her future profession.
“It feels really good to know that everybody who was here has something to do with the law and they continue to have Christian or Catholic values,” said Puente, a parishioner at St. Raymond Church in Downey. “I hope they implement [their values] when they go out and do their jobs, [because] it’s not about who wins, it’s about justice.”
The Red Mass tradition originated in 13th century Europe and has been celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year since the time of Edward I. The Mass receives its name from the practice of vesting the celebrant in red while the Lord High justices wore red robes.

“……. celebrated by Archbishop José Gomez in honor of their “service to our society,” as the archbishop noted in his welcoming remarks.”
What is Abp Gomez thinking? His act was absolutely EVIL and SCANDALOUS.
No former or current politician should be honored who publically supported or publically supports the INTRINSIC EVILS of:
ABORTION, EUTHANASIA, HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE, HUMAN CLONING, CONTRACEPTION, and/or EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH.
Just because a Pope, or a Bishop, or a Priest says something that violates or appears to violate HOLY SCRIPTURE or the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” does not mean we should approve or affirm anyone choosing to live in Mortal Sin.
“It feels really good to know that everybody who was here has something to do with the law and they continue to have Christian or Catholic values,” said Puente, – this is a TRAVESTY and ABOMINATION!
A Catholic education? An Archbishop who does not vet those he is honoring within his own Diocese ?
It means that Puente does not know Sacred Scripture or the CCC as well.
CCC: ” 2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.
Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves.
Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes. ”
CCC: ” 2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life.
A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,” “by the very commission of the offense,” and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.
The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.”
The scandals never stop in the modern Catholic Church.
O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee. And Pray For Those Who Do Not Have Recourse To Thee, Especially The Enemies Of The Church.
It all figures. Between pro-abortion politicians on Catholic school boards, homosexual teachers and clergy, the Religious Education Congress, etc., the archbishop is following in his predecessor footsteps.
Red Mass? Is that like the color red symbolizing communist governments like the PRC or the way the defunct USSR was?
Honoring murder supporters? What has gone awry in the concilliar church? Once right is now wrong and once wrong is now right! The concilliar church has turned things upside down. We do have a choice to remain Roman Catholic, and the liberty to rediscover our Roman Catholic Heritage. A Traditional Latin Mass (Tridentine) directory is available at your fingertips on the internet. Just type in your brower traditio. You will be pleasantly surprised to find a Roman Catholic Parish in your neighborhood and be glad you did. May God bless you in your search for the Roman Catholic faith put into daily practice.
Another unbelievable scandal, is the big award given to Cardinal Kasper last week, by the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, at Catholic University of America— for his “outstanding” theological and ecumenical contributions! He gave a big speech all about the interests and concerns of Pope Francis, I hear. What a JOKE!! Wonder what Cardinal Burke thinks of this?? Hope California Catholic Daily will publish an article on this horrible Catholic news event, soon!
Does anyone believe that God redeems or that redemption is possible? Perhaps they went to confession before Bishop Gomez and repented? Who knows, only God judges. Therefore, let our Catholic faithful continue to vote pro-life. Be at work, Church, and spread the Good News!
ALL4HIM, I’m sure we all hope they will go to confession and repent of their public and scandalous mortal sins.
But when, (and if) they will be required to publically renounce the sin by which they caused public Scandal – in REPARATION to correct their Scandal and help those they have lead astray.
The guilty politicians in this article have not made any attempt to make public REPARATION by renouncing their public sin.
CCC: ” 1491 The sacrament of Penance is a whole consisting in three actions of the penitent and the priest’s absolution.
The penitent’s acts are repentance,
confession or disclosure of sins to the priest,
and the intention to make reparation and do works of reparation. ”
Until such REPARATION is made, those politicians who have supported or do support the INTRINSIC EVILS of: abortion, euthanasia, homosexual marriage, contraception, embryonic stem cell research, and/or human cloning – – –
they MUST never be honored at any Catholic function, especially by a Bishop or Priests – because
it causes even MORE SCANDAL not only by the politician but by the Bishop as well.
I am listening to EWTN’s coverage of the Bishops Conference.
The bishops talk about pro-life activities. Recently pro-abortion officials were honored at L.A. Cathedral.
Hypocrisy!!
I also am watching the USCCB Conference on EWTN.
Most telling are the reported survey results which include: Priests, those who Rarely go to Mass, Young adults, Young marrieds, and those who go to Mass every Sunday.
It was very telling.
Each group listed the following:
1) More catechesis is needed, with the reasons “why” for Church teaching;
2) They want the Bishops to stay out of politics (which is the role of the Laity CCC – 898).
Not one Bishop brought up actively encouraging all literate Laity over age 15 to read the Bible and the CCC at home so the laity will accurate know the Faith and the reasons why.
(The CCC explains “why” for each of the teachings.)
Most Bishops still do not get it.
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The head of the CRS “Catholic Relief Services” was never asked:
1) How much of your budget is paid for by the Federal Government through Grants?
2) How much of your budget is paid for by non-Catholic groups and who are they?
3) How are you complying with “On the Service of Charity” Motu Proprio, to ensure you are teaching the Catholic Faith, and not merely being another social services organization ? And how are you teaching the Catholic Faith?
4) What are the salaries including compensation packages of each of the top 5 Executives at CRS (not including reimbursable expenses).
When we have a Pope who says”Who am I to judge… This encourages such behavior in the Church hierarchy.
IMPORTANT –
For those Catholics who want to “THANK CARDINAL BURKE for his VATICAN SERVICE” Life Site News has a letter/petition.

Wilkerson is a Mahony cronie, president of the bishops’ lobby (CCC) and tight with the LA diocese seminary. One of the old boys.
Interesting that Bishop Garcia would tell Gray Davis not to receive Communion due to his pro abortion views, but does not send out a memo to all priests in the Diocese not to give him communion? roughly 40% of US Catholics support abortion on demand, though the percentage for weekly Mass attendees is somewhat less. could it be that Bishop Garcia is a bit leery about generating a nationwide controversy over barring the then-governor from Communion, generating another wave of departures from the Church for those Mass attendees that also support abortion on demand? And when was the last time a priest or Bishop admonished a Catholic not to received Communion because they use contraception? Creating a spat like that would only produce another major departure of millionis of Mass attendees that use contraception? The Church remains weak that it cannot uphold its discipoionary for political and public relatioins
I say let the departees go. We would end up with a smaller, more vital and vibrant church. We would have people that would pass on the faith true to church teachings instead having so many people disgruntled because the Church won’t change it’s teachings on morals to be inline with our evil culture. We’re losing the battle and the evil culture is winning even in the our Catholic Church. Our HF is getting rid of the orthodox in favor of modernists.
Did Gray Davis and Ming Chin receive communion? If so, this has to stop — it is great that then Bishop Weigand told Davis not to receive communion, but what did Abp. Gomez do?
And where is the Vatican on denying communion? All we know is that Pope Francis looks to weak, feminine clergy, like Cardinal Wuerl, to advise him on Canon 915. Only Cardinal Burke, truly a man among the quivering, silly bishops of today, stood up and said, “no” this is wrong. Of course, Francis found a way to publicly humiliate Burke (a step which appears to also knock him out of the 2015 Synod — Ooops, did I do that!!).
What cleric do you think is listened to more among career-minded Catholic priests, bishops and pastors? Just look at how all these “lions” of the Church are falling over themselves to “clarify” their statements suggesting that Francis was somehow inept, or worse. It is up to us, Lay Catholics, to set up barricades and defend the Faith.
No one, NO ONE, should give one penny to the Diocese of LA. There are many, many fine conservative and Traditional orders and apostolates that can certainly use your funds. Think also of very devoted orders, like the Little Sisters of the Poor who serve the elderly poor, that would greatly thank you for your generosity. And, when you do have the courage to pull your funds away from the bloviated chancery of LA, tell the Archbishop that you feel BETRAYED by the lack of Faith of the Diocese. This type of honor to evil must end, it must!
Scandalous? You bet, but this is L.A. County, HOME of cafeteria Catholics, and apparently Cafeteria Catholic Bishops, as well. And I had read of Abp. Gomez being Opus Dei; aren’t they called to a much higher standard? Apparently yes, but not in this case. It’s actually kind of scary, when you consider that the fix is TOTALLY IN now, and just when it seemed that pro-life was making huge inroads especially among so many young people in high school and college. Then, something like this occurs, and incredible BAD EXAMPLE sets in. Not to speak of the huge dollop of HYPOCRISY and LIP SERVICE meted out by the libs present, to Catholic teaching re abortion, and not to mention using St. Thomas More in the most CRASS of ways, really not even honoring him and his heroic ways as a SAINT who stood up to King Henry VIII, by speaking the truths of the Catholic Faith to power. Who do all these C.I.N.O.’s think they’re fooling? Not anyone here @ CalCatholic. God help us all with Catholic “leadership” like this.
I have long been convinced that many of the priests and religious join groups like Opus Dei only to further their evil careers. They have learned well from their Communist teachers!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika and His Church !
Viva Cristo Rey!

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
“Kneeling before an image of the Crucified, he was filled with great fervor and consolation as he prayed. While his tear-filled eyes were gazing at the Lord’s cross, he heard with his bodily ears a voice coming from the cross, telling him three times: ‘Francis, go and repair my house which, as you see, is falling into ruin.”

Exhortations to the Clergy (Letters to the Clergy)
“These exhortations reflect Francis’s encouragement of the clergy to exercise solicitude “… in keeping the churches and altars and everything used in the celebration of the divine mysteries clean” (Assisi Compilation 60 ). Two versions exist, the second of which suggests influences of the Fourth Lateran Council and, more specifically, accentuates the concerns of Pope Honorius III whose exhortation, Sane cum olim or Expectavimus hactenus expresses similar exhortations.

Source 1 Let all of us, clergymen, consider the great sin and the ignorance some have toward the most holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and His most holy names and written words that consecrate His Body.3 2 We know It cannot be His Body without first being consecrated by word. 3 For we have and see nothing bodily of the Most High in this world except His Body and Blood, His names and words through which we have been made and redeemed from death to lifeIJo3:14.
Source4 Let all those who administer such most holy mysteries, however, especially those who administer them illicitly, personally consider how very dirty are the chalices, corporals and altar-linens upon which His Body and Blood are sacrificed.5 It is placed and left by many in dirty places, carried about unbecomingly, received unworthily, and administered to others”
One previous commentator asked for salaries, but specifically excluded reimbursable expenses, Employees are certainly entitled to legitimate reimbursable expenses, for travel or other approved purposes. But some employees game the system so that almost anything is reimbursable.
I suggest asking for all payments. Never know what’s buried in that expense account.
